Concurrent Validity and Reliability of Two Portable Powermeters (Power2Max vs. PowerTap) to Measure Different Types of Efforts in Cycling
[EN] The purpose was to assess the concurrent validity and reliability of two portable powermeters
(PowerTap vs. Power2Max) in different types of cycling efforts. Ten cyclists performed
two submaximal, one incremental maximal and two supramaximal sprint tests on an ergometer,
while pedaling power and cadence were registered by both powermeters and a cadence sensor
(GarminGSC10). During the submaximal and incremental maximal tests, significant correlations
were found for power and cadence data (r = 0.992–0.997 and 0.996–0.998, respectively, p < 0.001),
with a slight power underestimation by PowerTap (0.7–1.8%, p < 0.01) and a high reliability of both
powermeters (p < 0.001) for measurement of power (ICC = 0.926 and 0.936, respectively) and cadence
(ICC = 0.969 and 0.970, respectively). However, during the supramaximal sprint test, their agreement
to measure power and cadence was weak (r = 0.850 and 0.253, p < 0.05) due to the low reliability of
the cadence measurements (ICC between 0.496 and 0.736, and 0.574 and 0.664, respectively; p < 0.05)
in contrast to the high reliability of the cadence sensor (ICC = 0.987–0.994). In conclusion, both
powermeters are valid and reliable for measuring power and cadence during continuous cycling
efforts (~100–450 W), but questionable during sprint efforts (>500 W), where they are affected by
the gear ratio used (PowerTap) and by their low accuracy in cadence recording (PowerTap and
Power2Max).S
Biphasic Bioceramic Obtained from Byproducts of Sugar Beet Processing for Use in Bioactive Coatings and Bone Fillings
This study focuses on developing hydroxyapatite synthesized from a CaCO3
-rich byproduct of sugar beet processing called Carbocal® using a hydrothermal reactor. The purpose of this
biomaterial is to enhance the osteoinductivity of implantable surfaces and serve as a bone filler,
providing a sustainable and economically more affordable alternative. This research involved compositional analysis and micro- and macrostructural physicochemical characterization, complemented
with bioactivity and live/dead assays. The biphasic nature of the Carbocal®-derived sample was
significant within the context of the bioactivity concept previously proposed in the literature. The
bioactivity of the biomaterial was demonstrated through a viability test, where the cell growth was
nearly equivalent to that of the positive control. For comparison purposes, the same tests were
conducted with two additional samples: hydroxyapatite obtained from CaCO3 and commercial
hydroxyapatite. The resulting product of this process is biocompatible and possesses properties
similar to natural hydroxyapatite. Consequently, this biomaterial shows potential as a scaffold in
tissue engineering and as an adhesive filler to promote bone regeneration within the context of the
circular bioeconomy in the geographical area proposed.Junta de Andalucía14 página
Thickening of the pituitary stalk in children and adolescents with central diabetes insipidus: Causes and consequences
Background: Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a rare disorder in children. The aetiology of CDI in childhood is heterogeneous. The aim of this study is to illustrate the importance of a careful clinical and neuro-radiological follow-up of the pituitary and hypothalamus region in order to identify the aetiology and the development of associated hormonal deficiencies. Methods: Clinical and auxological variables of 15 children diagnosed with CDI were retrospectively analysed in a paediatric hospital. Evaluations of adenohypophyseal function and cranial MRI were performed periodically. Results: The mean age at diagnosis of CDI was 9.6 years (range: 1.32-15.9). The aetiological diagnosis could be established initially in 9 of the 15 patients, as 7 with a germinoma and 2 with a histiocytosis. After a mean follow-up of 5.5 years (range: 1.6-11.8), the number of idiopathic cases was reduced by half. At the end of the follow-up, the aetiological diagnoses were: 9 germinoma (60%), 3 histiocytosis (20%), and 3 idiopathic CDI (20%). There is a statistically significant association between stalk thickening and tumour aetiology. At least one adenohypophyseal hormonal deficiency was found in 67% of cases, with the majority developing in the first two years of follow-up. Growth hormone deficiency (60%) was the most prevalent. Conclusion: The follow-up of CDI should include hormone evaluation with special attention, due to its frequency, to GH deficiency. In addition, a biannual MRI in an idiopathic CDI should be performed, at least during the first 2-3 years after diagnosis, as 50% of them were diagnosed with a germinoma or histiocytosis during this period.
Beer industry in Peru is known for having a reduce amount of participants, a diverse
assortment of brands and high requirements in order to participate in. However, the industry
is not blameless with regard to industrial waste and pollution. Agency for Environmental
Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) is the public entity that specializes in the evaluation,
supervision, and regulations that oversee environmental protection within the various
economic enterprises. A proposal by the OEFA outlines the close supervision of the business
practices of the Beer Industry in 2025. One of the strategies OEFA asserts in this proposal is
the use of the circular economy thereby further guaranteeing the right of the people to enjoy a
healthy environment.
This strategic plan proposes long-term environmental protection objectives and an
optimization of waste management, creating new products by recycling the waste from beer
production. With this new window of opportunities for business, a regulatory outline is
required from the OEFA. If the specific strategies proposed are properly implemented and
each participant follows ethical business practices, then a true balance between the economy
and environment will be found.Tesi

Adipokines induce pro-inflammatory factors in activated Cd4+ T cells from osteoarthritis patient
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic systemic musculoskeletal disorder involving inflammation, immunity and metabolic alterations. OA is commonly regarded as non-inflammatory disease; still inflammation is recognized as contributing to the symptoms and progression of OA. New evidence suggests that adipokines are involved in the pathophysiology of OA and might modulate the production of inflammatory mediators including in immune cells. However, the role of immune component in osteoarthritis is still poorly investigated. To gain further insights into the interaction of immune cells in OA and the role of adipokines on these cells, we performed experiments aimed to determine the cytokine profile in activated CD4+ T cells from OA patients. For completeness, we also explored the cross talk between T lymphocytes and chondrocytes in OA by co-culturing human primary chondrocytes with activated CD4+ T cells in two ways: the first by incubating the cells by direct contact (D.C.) or by transwell system. Our results show that the exposure of activated CD4+ T cells to adipokines modulates IL-6, IL-8 and CCL-3 production. In addition, the production of key macromolecules of ECM (aggrecan and collagen-2) and matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13) in co-cultured chondrocytes with activated CD4+ T cells was altere
Steroid hormone-related polymorphisms associate with the development of bone erosions in rheumatoid arthritis and help to predict disease progression: Results from the REPAIR consortium
Here, we assessed whether 41 SNPs within steroid hormone genes associated with erosive disease.
The most relevant finding was the rheumatoid factor (RF)-specific effect of the CYP1B1, CYP2C9, ESR2,
FcγR3A, and SHBG SNPs to modulate the risk of bone erosions (P = 0.004, 0.0007, 0.0002, 0.013 and
0.015) that was confirmed through meta-analysis of our data with those from the DREAM registry
(P = 0.000081, 0.0022, 0.00074, 0.0067 and 0.0087, respectively). Mechanistically, we also found a
gender-specific correlation of the CYP2C9rs1799853T/T genotype with serum vitamin D3 levels (P = 0.00085)
and a modest effect on IL1β levels after stimulation of PBMCs or blood with LPS and PHA (P = 0.0057
and P = 0.0058). An overall haplotype analysis also showed an association of 3 ESR1 haplotypes with
a reduced risk of erosive arthritis (P = 0.009, P = 0.002, and P = 0.002). Furthermore, we observed
that the ESR2, ESR1 and FcγR3A SNPs influenced the immune response after stimulation of PBMCs or
macrophages with LPS or Pam3Cys (P = 0.002, 0.0008, 0.0011 and 1.97•10−7). Finally, we found that a model built with steroid hormone-related SNPs significantly improved the prediction of erosive disease
in seropositive patients (PRF+ = 2.46•10−8) whereas no prediction was detected in seronegative patients
(PRF− = 0.36). Although the predictive ability of the model was substantially lower in the replication
population (PRF+ = 0.014), we could confirm that CYP1B1 and CYP2C9 SNPs help to predict erosive
disease in seropositive patients. These results are the first to suggest a RF-specific association of steroid
hormone-related polymorphisms with erosive disease
