Melting behavior of large disordered sodium clusters
The melting-like transition in disordered sodium clusters Na_N, with N=92 and
142 is studied by using a first-principles constant-energy molecular dynamics
simulation method. Na_142, whose atoms are distributed in two (surface and
inner) main shells with different radial distances to the center of mass of the
cluster, melts in two steps: the first one, at approx. 130 K, is characterized
by a high intrashell mobility of the atoms, and the second, homogeneous
melting, at approx. 270 K, involves diffusive motion of all the atoms across
the whole cluster volume (both intrashell and intershell displacements are
allowed). On the contrary, the melting of Na_92 proceeds gradually over a very
wide temperature interval, without any abrupt step visible in the thermal or
structural melting indicators. The occurrence of well defined steps in the
melting transition is then shown to be related to the existence of a
distribution of the atoms in shells. Thereby we propose a necessary condition
for a cluster to be considered rigorously amorphouslike (totally disordered),
namely that there are no space regions of the cluster where the local value of
the atomic density is considerably reduced. Na_92 is the only cluster from the
two considered that verifies this condition, so its thermal behavior can be
considered as representative of that expected for amorphous clusters. Na_142,
on the other hand, has a discernible atomic shell structure and should be
considered instead as just partially disordered. The thermal behavior of these
two clusters is also compared to that of icosahedral (totally ordered) sodium

Numerical resolution of the hyperbolic heat equation using smoothed mathematical functions instead of Heaviside and Dirac delta distributions
The hyperbolic bioheat equation (HBE) has been used to model heating applications involving very short power pulses. This equation includes two mathematical distributions (Heaviside and Delta) which have to be necessarily substituted for smoothed mathematical functions when the HBE is solved by numerical methods. This study focuses on which type of smoothed functions would be suitable for this purpose, i.e. those which would provide solutions similar to those obtained analytically from the original Heaviside and Delta distributions. The logistic function was considered as a substitute for the Heaviside function, while its derivative and the probabilistic Gaussian function were considered as substitutes for the Delta distribution. We also considered polynomial interpolation functions, in particular, the families of smoothed functions with continuous second derivative without overshoot used by COMSOL Multiphysics. All the smoothed functions were used to solve the HBE by the Finite Element Method (COMSOL Multiphysics), and the solutions were compared to those obtained analytically from the original Heaviside and Delta distributions. The results showed that only the COMSOL smoothed functions provide a numerical solution almost identical to the analytical one. Finally, we demonstrated mathematically that in order to find a suitable smoothed function (f) that must adequately substitute any mathematical distribution (D) in the HBE, the difference D - f must have compact support. Sistema de programación y control automático de un riego por goteo subterráneo en un cultivo de olivar
En esta comunicación se presenta un nuevo sistema de programación y control
automático del riego por goteo subterráneo para un cultivo de olivar ecológico de una finca
situada en el T.M. de Tabernas en Almería (España) y propiedad de la empresa Rafael
Alonso Aguilera S.L. La finca se riega mediante un novedoso sistema de riego subterráneo
patentado por esta empresa. El sistema de control propuesto está basado en el
establecimiento de un balance hídrico diario en el en el sistema suelo-planta a partir de la
estimación de las necesidades de riego del cultivo en tiempo real a partir de los datos
climáticos medidos en tiempo real a partir de una estación agroclimática. Se presentan
también los resultados de la evaluación del funcionamiento del sistema a lo largo de un
periodo de 5 años y se analiza el ahorro de agua proporcionado por la combinación del
sistema de control del riego y del método de riego subterráneo
Exploring host genetic polymorphisms involved in SARS-CoV infection autcomes: implications for personalized medicine in COVID-19
Objective. To systematically explore genetic polymorphisms associated with the clinical outcomes in SARS-CoV infection in
humans. Methods. This comprehensive literature search comprised available English papers published in PubMed/Medline and
SCOPUS databases following the PRISMA-P guidelines and PICO/AXIS criteria. Results. Twenty-nine polymorphisms located
in 21 genes were identified as associated with SARS-CoV susceptibility/resistance, disease severity, and clinical outcomes
predominantly in Asian populations. Thus, genes implicated in key pathophysiological processes such as the mechanisms
related to the entry of the virus into the cell and the antiviral immune/inflammatory responses were identified. Conclusions.
Although caution must be taken, the results of this systematic review suggest that multiple genetic polymorphisms are
associated with SARS-CoV infection features by affecting virus pathogenesis and host immune response, which could have
important applications for the study and understanding of genetics in SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 and for personalized
translational clinical practice depending on the population studied and associated environments
Multi-variate model of T cell clonotype competition and homeostasis
Diversity of the naive T cell repertoire is maintained by competition for stimuli provided by self-peptides bound to major histocompatibility complexes (self-pMHCs). We extend an existing bi-variate competition model to a multi-variate model of the dynamics of multiple T cell clonotypes which share stimuli. In order to understand the late-time behaviour of the system, we analyse: (i) the dynamics until the extinction of the first clonotype, (ii) the time to the first extinction event, (iii) the probability of extinction of each clonotype, and (iv) the size of the surviving clonotypes when the first extinction event takes place. We also find the probability distribution of the number of cell divisions per clonotype before its extinction. The mean size of a new clonotype at quasi-steady state is an increasing function of the stimulus available to it, and a decreasing function of the fraction of stimuli it shares with other clonotypes. Thus, the probability of, and time to, extinction of a new clonotype entering the pool of T cell clonotypes is determined by the extent of competition for stimuli it experiences and by its initial number of cells
Domination spaces and factorization of linear and multilinear summing operators
[EN] It is well known that not every summability property for multilinear operators leads to a factorization theorem. In this paper we undertake a detailed study of factorization schemes for summing linear and nonlinear operators. Our aim is to integrate under the same theory a wide family of classes of mappings for which a Pietsch type factorization theorem holds. Chagas disease in Latin American migrants: a Spanish challenge
AbstractChagas’ disease affects millions in Latin America and is the leading cause of cardiomyopathy and death due to cardiovascular disease in patients aged 30–50 years. As a consequence of immigration it has settled in several European countries, where besides imported cases, autochthonous infections arise through vertical transmission and blood/organ donation. All Latin American immigrants who attended our Unit were screened for T. cruzi infection (ELISA and IFAT ± PCR). An ECG and echocardiogram were requested for all positive patients, and oesophageal manometry, barium swallow and barium enema were requested according to patient symptoms. All patients under 50 years without severe cardiac involvement and who had not received correct treatment previously were treated with benznidazole 5 mg/kg/day for 60 days. Patients were followed-up with serology and PCR 1 month after treatment ended and every 6 months thereafter. A total of 1146 Latin Americans were screened for T. cruzi (357 positive serology results). The typical patient profile was a Bolivian female, of rural origin, in her fourth decade of life, without evidence of visceral involvement. Treatment tolerance was poor, with 29.7% discontinuing treatment due to adverse reactions. Among those with adverse reactions (52%), the most frequent were cutaneous hypersensitivity (68.7%), gastrointestinal upset (20%) and nervous system disturbances (16.2%). T. cruzi infection is no longer limited to Latin America. Poor treatment tolerance can limit current treatment options. More epidemiological data are necessary to estimate the magnitude of a problem of great relevance for public health and health resource planning
