Anisotropic Radial Layout for Visualizing Centrality and Structure in Graphs
This paper presents a novel method for layout of undirected graphs, where
nodes (vertices) are constrained to lie on a set of nested, simple, closed
curves. Such a layout is useful to simultaneously display the structural
centrality and vertex distance information for graphs in many domains,
including social networks. Closed curves are a more general constraint than the
previously proposed circles, and afford our method more flexibility to preserve
vertex relationships compared to existing radial layout methods. The proposed
approach modifies the multidimensional scaling (MDS) stress to include the
estimation of a vertex depth or centrality field as well as a term that
penalizes discord between structural centrality of vertices and their alignment
with this carefully estimated field. We also propose a visualization strategy
for the proposed layout and demonstrate its effectiveness using three social
network datasets.Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 25th International Symposium on

Patterns of lung cancer mortality in 23 countries: Application of the Age-Period-Cohort model
BACKGROUND: Smoking habits do not seem to be the main explanation of the epidemiological characteristics of female lung cancer mortality in Asian countries. However, Asian countries are often excluded from studies of geographical differences in trends for lung cancer mortality. We thus examined lung cancer trends from 1971 to 1995 among men and women for 23 countries, including four in Asia. METHODS: International and national data were used to analyze lung cancer mortality from 1971 to 1995 in both sexes. Age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) were analyzed in five consecutive five-year periods and for each five-year age group in the age range 30 to 79. The age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to estimate the period effect (adjusted for age and cohort effects) for mortality from lung cancer. RESULTS: The sex ratio of the ASMR for lung cancer was lower in Asian countries, while the sex ratio of smoking prevalence was higher in Asian countries. The mean values of the sex ratio of the ASMR from lung cancer in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan for the five 5-year period were 2.10, 2.39, 3.07, and 3.55, respectively. These values not only remained quite constant over each five-year period, but were also lower than seen in the western countries. The period effect, for lung cancer mortality as derived for the 23 countries from the APC model, could be classified into seven patterns. CONCLUSION: Period effects for both men and women in 23 countries, as derived using the APC model, could be classified into seven patterns. Four Asian countries have a relatively low sex ratio in lung cancer mortality and a relatively high sex ratio in smoking prevalence. Factors other than smoking might be important, especially for women in Asian countries
Expression of osteoprotegerin and its ligands, RANKL and TRAIL, in rheumatoid arthritis
Osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor-?B ligand (RANKL) and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) have been involved in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathophysiology. In this study, we assessed messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of these molecules by qPCR in peripheral blood from 26 patients with RA (12 of them with ischemic heart disease -IHD) and 10 healthy controls. Correlation coefficients between OPG, RANKL and TRAIL expression levels in RA patients and their clinical and demographic characteristics were also evaluated. Whereas OPG and OPG/TRAIL ratio expression were significantly increased in RA patients compared to controls (fold change?=?1.79, p?=?0.013 and 2.07, p?=?0.030, respectively), RANKL/OPG ratio was significantly decreased (fold change?=?0.50, p?=?0.020). No significant differences were found between patients and controls in RANKL and TRAIL expression. Interestingly, TRAIL expression was significantly higher in RA patients with IHD compared to those without IHD (fold change?=?1.46, p?=?0.033). Moreover, biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) significantly decreased RANKL expression in RA patients (p?=?0.016). Our study supports an important role of OPG and TRAIL in RA. Furthermore, it highlights an effect of biologic DMARDs in the modulation of RANKL

High tide or riptide on the cosmic shoreline? A water-rich atmosphere or stellar contamination for the warm super-Earth GJ 486b from JWST observations
Planets orbiting M-dwarf stars are prime targets in the search for rocky exoplanet atmospheres. The small size of M dwarfs renders their planets exceptional targets for transmission spectroscopy, facilitating atmospheric characterization. However, it remains unknown whether their host stars' highly variable extreme-UV radiation environments allow atmospheres to persist. With JWST, we have begun to determine whether or not the most favorable rocky worlds orbiting M dwarfs have detectable atmospheres. Here, we present a 2.8–5.2 μm JWST NIRSpec/G395H transmission spectrum of the warm (700 K, 40.3× Earth's insolation) super-Earth GJ 486b (1.3 R⊕ and 3.0 M⊕). The measured spectrum from our two transits of GJ 486b deviates from a flat line at 2.2σ − 3.3σ, based on three independent reductions. Through a combination of forward and retrieval models, we determine that GJ 486b either has a water-rich atmosphere (with the most stringent constraint on the retrieved water abundance of H2O > 10% to 2σ) or the transmission spectrum is contaminated by water present in cool unocculted starspots. We also find that the measured stellar spectrum is best fit by a stellar model with cool starspots and hot faculae. While both retrieval scenarios provide equal quality fits () to our NIRSpec/G395H observations, shorter wavelength observations can break this degeneracy and reveal if GJ 486b sustains a water-rich atmosphere
Clinical trial to assess the effect of physical exercise on endothelial function and insulin resistance in pregnant women
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Preeclampsia (PE) is a common maternal disease that complicates 5 to 10% of pregnancies and remains as the major cause of maternal and neonatal mortality. Cost-effective interventions aimed at preventing the development of preeclampsia are urgently needed. However, the pathogenesis of PE is not well known. Multiple mechanisms such as oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and insulin resistance may contribute to its development. Regular aerobic exercise recovers endothelial function; improves insulin resistance and decreases oxidative stress. Therefore the purpose of this clinical trial is to determine the effect of regular aerobic exercise on endothelial function, on insulin resistance and on pregnancy outcome.</p> <p>Methods and design</p> <p>64 pregnant women will be included in a blind, randomized clinical trial, and parallel assignment. The exercise group will do regular aerobic physical exercise: walking (10 minutes), aerobic exercise (30 minutes), stretching (10 minutes) and relaxation exercise (10 minutes) in three sessions per week. Control group will do the activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, and walking) without counselling from a physical therapist.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00741312.</p
Silicon-hydroxyapatite bioactive coatings (Si-HA) from diatomaceous earth and silica. Study of adhesion and proliferation of osteoblast-like cells
The aim of this study consisted on investigating
the influence of silicon substituted hydroxyapatite (Si–HA)
coatings over the human osteoblast-like cell line (SaOS-2)
behaviour. Diatomaceous earth and silica, together with
commercial hydroxyapatite were respectively the silicon
and HA sources used to produce the Si–HA coatings. HA
coatings with 0 wt% of silicon were used as control of the
experiment. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) was the selected
technique to deposit the coatings. The Si–HA thin films
were characterized by Fourier Transformed Infrared
Spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrating the efficient transfer of
Si to the HA structure. The in vitro cell culture was
established to assess the cell attachment, proliferation and
osteoblastic activity respectively by, Scanning Electron
Microscopy (SEM), DNA and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
quantification. The SEM analysis demonstrated a similar
adhesion behaviour of the cells on the tested materials and
the maintenance of the typical osteoblastic morphology
along the time of culture. The Si–HA coatings did not
evidence any type of cytotoxic behaviour when compared
with HA coatings. Moreover, both the proliferation rate
and osteoblastic activity results showed a slightly better
performance on the Si–HA coatings from diatoms than on
the Si–HA from silica. This work was supported by the UE-Interreg IIIA (SP1.P151/03) Proteus project and Xunta de Galicia ( Projects: 2006/12 and PGIDITO5PXIC30301PN)
Successful treatment of Candida parapsilosis mural endocarditis with combined caspofungin and voriconazole
BACKGROUND: Fungal mural endocarditis is a rare entity in which the antemortem diagnosis is seldom made. Seven cases of mural endocarditis caused by Candida spp. have been collected from literature and six of these patients died after treatment with amphotericin B. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of mural endocarditis diagnosed by transesophageal echocardiogram and positive blood cultures to Candida parapsilosis. Because blood cultures continued to yield C. parapsilosis despite caspofungin monotherapy, treatment with voriconazole was added. CONCLUSION: This is the first description of successful treatment of C. parapsilosis mural endocarditis with caspofungin and voriconazole
A mechanistic framework for auxin dependent Arabidopsis root hair elongation to low external phosphate
Phosphate (P) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth. Roots employ adaptive mechanisms to forage for P in soil. Root hair elongation is particularly important since P is immobile. Here we report that auxin plays a critical role promoting root hair growth in Arabidopsis in response to low external P. Mutants disrupting auxin synthesis (taa1) and transport (aux1) attenuate the low P root hair response. Conversely, targeting AUX1 expression in lateral root cap and epidermal cells rescues this low P response in aux1. Hence auxin transport from the root apex to differentiation zone promotes auxin-dependent hair response to low P. Low external P results in induction of root hair expressed auxin-inducible transcription factors ARF19, RSL2, and RSL4. Mutants lacking these genes disrupt the low P root hair response. We conclude auxin synthesis, transport and response pathway components play critical roles regulating this low P root adaptive response
