Relations between the SNO and the Super Kamiokande solar neutrino rates

    Get PDF
By comparing the neutrino spectra measured by SNO and Super Kamiokande, we obtain inequalities between the ratios of observed rate to SSM rate for the two experiments. These inequalities apply to a possibly energy-dependent reduction of the SSM flux and to the case of neutrino oscillations. We use them to examine the relationship between the two experiments expected for the MSW and ``Just-So" oscillation scenarios.Comment: 8 pages + 3 figures, REVTeX, uuencoded file created on a VMS syste

    Radiative Leptonic BcB_c Decays

We analyze the radiative leptonic BcB_c decay mode: Bc→ℓνγB_c \to \ell \nu \gamma (ℓ=e,μ\ell=e, \mu) using a QCD-inspired constituent quark model. The prediction: B(Bc→ℓνγ)≃3×10−5{\cal B}(B_c \to \ell \nu \gamma)\simeq 3 \times 10^{-5} makes this channel experimentally promising in view of the large number of BcB_c mesons which are expected to be produced at the future hadron facilities.Comment: LaTex, 12 pages, 2 figures. Nonet Symmetry and Two-Body Decays of Charmed Mesons

The decay of charmed mesons into pseudoscalar (P) and vector (V) mesons is studied in the context of nonet symmetry. We have found that it is badly broken in the PP channels and in the P sector of the PV channels as expected from the non-ideal mixing of the \eta and the \eta'. In the VV channels, it is also found that nonet symmetry does not describe the data well. We have found that this discrepancy cannot be attributed entirely to SU(3) breaking at the usual level of 20--30%. At least one, or both, of nonet and SU(3) symmetry must be very badly broken. The possibility of resolving the problem in the future is also discussed.Comment: 9 pages, UTAPHY-HEP-

Disorder raises the critical temperature of a cuprate superconductor

With the discovery of charge density waves (CDW) in most members of the cuprate high temperature superconductors, the interplay between superconductivity and CDW has become a key point in the debate on the origin of high temperature superconductivity. Some experiments in cuprates point toward a CDW state competing with superconductivity, but others raise the possibility of a CDW-superconductivity intertwined order, or more elusive pair-density wave (PDW). Here we have used proton irradiation to induce disorder in crystals of La1.875_{1.875}Ba0.125_{0.125}CuO4_4 and observed a striking 50% increase of TcT_\mathrm{c} accompanied by a suppression of the CDW. This is in clear contradiction with the behaviour expected of a d-wave superconductor for which both magnetic and non-magnetic defects should suppress TcT_\mathrm{c}. Our results thus make an unambiguous case for the strong detrimental effect of the CDW on bulk superconductivity in La1.875_{1.875}Ba0.125_{0.125}CuO4_4. Using tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurements, we find evidence for dynamic layer decoupling in PDW phase. Our results establish irradiation-induced disorder as a particularly relevant tuning parameter for the many families of superconductors with coexisting density waves, which we demonstrate on superconductors such as the dichalcogenides and Lu5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10}.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

Relativistic and Binding Energy Corrections to Direct Photon Production In Upsilon Decay

    Get PDF
A systematic gauge-invariant method is used to calculate the rate for an upsilon meson to decay inclusively into a prompt photon. An expansion is made in the quark relative velocity v, which is a small natural parameter for heavy quark systems. Inclusion of these O(v^2) corrections tends to increase the photon rate in the middle z range and to lower it for larger z, a feature supported by the data.Comment: 13 pages, LateX, One figure (to be published in Phys. Conditional q-Entropies and Quantum Separability: A Numerical Exploration

We revisit the relationship between quantum separability and the sign of the relative q-entropies of composite quantum systems. The q-entropies depend on the density matrix eigenvalues p_i through the quantity omega_q = sum_i p_i^q. Renyi's and Tsallis' measures constitute particular instances of these entropies. We perform a systematic numerical survey of the space of mixed states of two-qubit systems in order to determine, as a function of the degree of mixture, and for different values of the entropic parameter q, the volume in state space occupied by those states characterized by positive values of the relative entropy. Similar calculations are performed for qubit-qutrit systems and for composite systems described by Hilbert spaces of larger dimensionality. We pay particular attention to the limit case q --> infinity. Our numerical results indicate that, as the dimensionalities of both subsystems increase, composite quantum systems tend, as far as their relative q-entropies are concerned, to behave in a classical way

Semi-Empirical Bound on the Chlorinr-37 Solar Neutrino Experiment

The Kamiokande measurement of energetic Boron-8 neutrinos from the sun is used to set a lower bound on the contribution of the same neutrinos to the signal in the \Chlorine\ experiment. Implications for Beryllium-7 neutrinos are discussed.Comment: Latex, 6 pages + 1 postscript figure (included). UTAPHY-HEP-

Improved Laboratory Transition Probabilities for Neutral Chromium and Re-determination of the Chromium Abundance for the Sun and Three Stars

Branching fraction measurements from Fourier transform spectra in conjunction with published radiative lifetimes are used to determine transition probabilities for 263 lines of neutral chromium. These laboratory values are employed to derive a new photospheric abundance for the Sun: log ϵ\epsilon(Cr I)⊙_{\odot} = 5.64±\pm0.01 (σ=0.07\sigma = 0.07). These Cr I solar abundances do not exhibit any trends with line strength nor with excitation energy and there were no obvious indications of departures from LTE. In addition, oscillator strengths for singly-ionized chromium recently reported by the FERRUM Project are used to determine: log ϵ\epsilon(Cr II)⊙_{\odot} = 5.77±\pm0.03 (σ=0.13\sigma = 0.13). Transition probability data are also applied to the spectra of three stars: HD 75732 (metal-rich dwarf), HD 140283 (metal-poor subgiant), and CS 22892-052 (metal-poor giant). In all of the selected stars, Cr I is found to be underabundant with respect to Cr II. The possible causes for this abundance discrepancy and apparent ionization imbalance are discussed.Comment: 44 pages, 6 figure

Is Quantum Bit Commitment Really Possible?

    Get PDF
We show that all proposed quantum bit commitment schemes are insecure because the sender, Alice, can almost always cheat successfully by using an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type of attack and delaying her measurement until she opens her commitment.Comment: Major revisions to include a more extensive introduction and an example of bit commitment.
