    Identification and Estimation of Structural-Change Models with Misclassification

    Consider a simple change-point model with a binary regressor. We examine the consistency of the change-point estimator when the regressor is subject to misclassification. It is found that the time of change can always be identified. Further, special cases where the structural parameters can also be identified are discussed. Simulation evidence is provided.

    LED Traffic Light as Communication Device

    The visible light from an LED (light emitting diode) traffic light can be modulated and encoded with information. Hence, it can be used for the broadcasting of audio messages or any traffic or road information. Essentially all LED traffic lights can be used as communications devices. The paper focuses on the description of an audio information system made up of high brightness, visible light emitting diodes (LEDs) in which one or more LEDs are modulated and encoded with audio messages. The system also comprises a receiver combined with a speaker which is located at a distance from the LED traffic light. The receiver is designed to demodulate the optically transmitted audio information and broadcast the messages with the speaker. The optical link employs intensity modulation with direct detection. The audio information system implemented on an LED traffic light can provide the function of open space, wireless broadcasting of audio messages.published_or_final_versio

    從《裸命》看陳冠中小説裏的異托邦書寫

    陳冠中本是一名文化人,七十年代在港創辦《號外》雜誌,亦曾任電影編劇。小説作品只有《太陽膏之夢》(1978)、《什麼都沒有發生》(1998)等數部短篇。他直到2000年定居北京,才潛心寫作 。其作品計有《盛世:中國2013年》(2009)、《裸命》(2013)、《建豐二年》(2015)及近作《北京零公里》(2020)。這幾部作品均以不同的表現方式構建出一個「具備異質性的場域」,以此觀照在中國共產黨統治之下的新中國,寫出時代的矛盾,並由此想象新中國的未來進路。 《裸命》在2013年出版,以藏人強巴的第一身敍事角度切入,描寫其在漢藏兩地的所見所聞,並滲入大膽的情慾書寫,以此呈現人在當代中國下的生存困局。本文會以該文本為研究對象,透過分析作品中的藏地書寫、情慾隱喻等不同元素,找出陳冠中作品中異托邦圖像的特徵,並歸結出異托邦在當下時代的意義。論文第一章為緒論,將交代研究緣起及研究方法,概述陳冠中數部政治小説的特色,及《裸命》的獨特之處;第二章界定傅柯(Michel Foucault)提出的異托邦概念;第三章以文本細讀的方式,從小説中的性愛描寫、藏地書寫以及裸命的具體呈現等筆法入手,並借用阿岡本( Giorgio Agamben)的政治哲學觀,找出文中異托邦書寫與現實的關係及意義所在;第四章為結論,總結陳冠中以小説回應時代,洞見現實的寫作特點

    Auto/cross-regulation of Hoxb3 expression in posterior hindbrain and spinal cord

    The complex and dynamic pattern of Hoxb3 expression in the developing hindbrain and the associated neural crest of mouse embryos is controlled by three separate cis-regulatory elements: element I (region A), element IIIa, and the r5 enhancer (element IVa). We have examined the cis-regulatory element IIIa by transgenic and mutational analysis to determine the upstream trans-acting factors and mechanisms that are involved in controlling the expression of the mouse Hoxb3 gene in the anterior spinal cord and hindbrain up to the r5/r6 boundary, as well as the associated neural crest which migrate to the third and posterior branchial arches and to the gut. By deletion analysis, we have identified the sequence requirements within a 482-bp element III482. Two Hox binding sites are identified in element III482 and we have shown that in vitro both Hoxb3 and Hoxb4 proteins can interact with these Hox binding sites, suggesting that auto/cross-regulation is required for establishing the expression of Hoxb3 in the neural tube domain. Interestingly, we have identified a novel GCCAGGC sequence motif within element III482, which is also required to direct gene expression to a subset of the expression domains except for rhombomere 6 and the associated neural crest migrating to the third and posterior branchial arches. Element III482 can direct a higher level of reporter gene expression in r6, which led us to investigate whether kreisler is involved in regulating Hoxb3 expression in r6 through this element. However, our transgenic and mutational analysis has demonstrated that, although kreisler binding sites are present, they are not required for the establishment or maintenance of reporter gene expression in r6. Our results have provided evidence that the expression of Hoxb3 in the neural tube up to the r5/r6 boundary is auto/cross-regulated by Hox genes and expression of Hoxb3 in r6 does not require kreisler. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).published_or_final_versio

    Clinical significance of hepatic derangement in severe acute respiratory syndrome

    Aim: Elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is commonly seen among patients suffering from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). We report the progression and clinical significance of liver derangement in a large cohort of SARS patient. Methods: Serial assay of serum ALT was followed in patients who fulfilled the WHO criteria of SARS. Those with elevated ALT were compared with those with normal liver functions for clinical outcome. Serology for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was checked. Adverse outcomes were defined as oxygen desaturation, need of intensive care unit (ICU) and mechanical ventilation and death. Results: Two hundred and ninety-four patients were included in this study. Seventy (24%) patients had elevated serum ALT on admission and 204 (69%) patients had elevated ALT during the subsequent course of illness. Using peak ALT >5×ULN as a cut-off and after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the odds ratio of peak ALT >5× ULN for oxygen desaturation was 3.24 (95%CI 1.23-8.59, P = 0.018), ICU care was 3.70 (95%CI 1.38-9.89, P = 0.009), mechanical ventilation was 6.64 (95%CI 2.22-19.81, P = 0.001) and death was 7.34 (95%CI 2.28-24.89, P = 0.001). Ninety-three percent of the survived patients had ALT levels normalized or were on the improving trend during follow-up. Chronic hepatitis B was not associated with worse clinical outcomes. Conclusion: Reactive hepatitis is a common complication of SARS-coronavirus infection. Those patients with severe hepatitis had worse clinical outcome. © 2005 The WJG Press and Elsevier Inc.     Interim estimates of the effectiveness of influenza vaccination against influenza-associated hospitalization in children in Hong Kong, 2015-16

    From 1 September 2015 through 31 January 2016, we enrolled 2068 children 6 months to 17 years of age admitted to hospital with a febrile acute respiratory infection in our test-negative study. Information on receipt of 2015-16 northern hemisphere inactivated influenza vaccination was elicited from parents or legal guardians. Using conditional logistic regression adjusting for age and matching on calendar time, we estimated influenza vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization with influenza A or B to be 79.2% (95% confidence interval: 42.0%-92.4%).     Background: Influenza A(H3N2) viruses circulated for 12 consecutive months in Hong Kong in 2016-2017, peaking in late June and July 2017. The objective of our study was to estimate the effectiveness of influenza vaccination in preventing hospitalizations in children in Hong Kong. Methods: We conducted a test-negative study between September 1 2016 and August 31 2017, enrolling children 6 months to 17 years of age hospitalized for an acute respiratory infection. Influenza was diagnosed by PCR on nasopharyngeal aspirates. Results: We enrolled 5514 children, including 3608 children between 6 months to 2 years, 1600 children 3-5 years, and 1206 children 6-17 years of age. Influenza-associated hospitalizations occurred throughout the study year but time of vaccination of these children was also wide-spread, from September 2016 to May 2017. Influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) was 39.7% (95% CI: 14.7, 57.3%) against laboratory-confirmed influenza A(H3N2). In analyses stratified by time since vaccination, the VE against influenza A(H3N2) was 52.8% (17.1%, 73.2%) within 3 months of vaccination, and 31.2% (-6.6%, 55.6%) 4-6 months after vaccination.     Nodal and Nematic Superconducting Phases in NbSe2_2 Monolayers from Competing Superconducting Channels

    Transition metal dichalcogenides like 2H-NbSe2_2 in their two-dimensional (2D) form exhibit Ising superconductivity with the quasiparticle spins are firmly pinned in the direction perpendicular to the basal plane. This enables them to withstand exceptionally high magnetic fields beyond the Pauli limit for superconductivity. Using field-angle-resolved magnetoresistance experiments for fields rotated in the basal plane we investigate the field-angle dependence of the upper critical field (Hc2_2), which directly reflects the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. We observe a six-fold nodal symmetry superposed on a two-fold symmetry. This agrees with theoretical predictions of a nodal topological superconducting phase near Hc2_2, together with a nematic superconducting state. We demonstrate that in NbSe2_2 such unconventional superconducting states can arise from the presence of several competing superconducting channels
