SDSS J212531.92–010745.9 : the first definite PG 1159 close binary system
Aims. The archival spectrum of SDSS J212531.92−010745.9 shows not only the typical signature of a PG 1159 star, but also indicates the presence of a companion. Our aim was the proof of the binary nature of this object and the determination of its orbital period.
Methods. We performed time-series photometry of SDSS J212531.92−010745.9. We observed the object during 10 nights, spread over one month, with the Tübingen 80 cm and the Göttingen 50 cm telescopes. We fitted the observed light curve with a sine and simulated the light curve of this system with the nightfall program. Furthermore, we compared the spectrum of SDSS J212531.92−010745.9 with
NLTE models, the results of which also constrain the light curve solution.
Results. An orbital period of 6.95616(33) h with an amplitude of 0.354(3) mag is derived from our observations. A pulsation period could not be detected. For the PG 1159 star we found, as preliminary results from comparison with our NLTE models, T eff ∼ 90 000 K, log g ∼ 7.60, and the abundance ratio C/He ∼ 0.05 by number fraction. For the companion we obtained with a mean radius of 0.4 ± 0.1 R, a mass of 0.4 ± 0.1 M, and a temperature of 8200 K on the irradiated side, good agreement between the observed light curve and the nightfall simulation, but we do not regard those values as final
Dynamic masses for the close PG1159 binary SDSSJ212531.92-010745.9
SDSSJ212531.92-010745.9 is the first known PG1159 star in a close binary with
a late main sequence companion allowing a dynamical mass determination. The
system shows flux variations with a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 0.7 mag and
a period of about 6.96h. In August 2007, 13 spectra of SDSSJ212531.92-010745.9
covering the full orbital phase range were taken at the TWIN 3.5m telescope at
the Calar Alto Observatory (Alm\'{e}ria, Spain). These confirm the typical
PG1159 features seen in the SDSS discovery spectrum, together with the Balmer
series of hydrogen in emission (plus other emission lines), interpreted as
signature of the companion's irradiated side. A radial velocity curve was
obtained for both components. Using co-added radial-velocity-corrected spectra,
the spectral analysis of the PG1159 star is being refined.
The system's lightcurve, obtained during three seasons of photometry with the
G\"ottingen 50cm and T\"ubingen 80cm telescopes, was fitted with both the
NIGHTFALL and PHOEBE binary simulation programs. An accurate mass determination
of the PG1159 component from the radial velocity measurements requires to first
derive the inclination, which requires light curve modelling and yields further
constraints on radii, effective temperature and separation of the system's
components. From the analysis of all data available so far, we present the

Locality and topology with fat link overlap actions
We study the locality and topological properties of fat link clover overlap
(FCO) actions. We find that a small amount of fattening (2-4 steps of APE or 1
step of HYP) already results in greatly improved properties compared to the
Wilson overlap (WO). We present a detailed study of the localisation of the FCO
and its connection to the density of low modes of . In contrast to
the Wilson overlap, on quenched gauge backgrounds we do not find any dependence
of the localization of the FCO on the gauge coupling. This suggests that the
FCO remains local in the continuum limit. The FCO also faithfully reproduces
the zero mode wave functions of typical lattice instantons, not like the Wilson
overlap. After a general discussion of different lattice definitions of the
topological charge we also show that the FCO together with the Boulder charge
are likely to satisfy the index theorem in the continuum limit. Finally, we
present a high statistics computation of the quenched topological
susceptibility with the FCO action.Comment: 19 pages, LaTe
Twilight observations suggest unknown sources of HO_x
Measurements of the concentrations of OH and HO_(2) (HO_(x)) in the high-latitude lower stratosphere imply the existence of unknown photolytic sources of HO_(x). The strength of the additional HO_(x) source required to match the observations depends only weakly on solar zenith angle (SZA) for 80° < SZA < 93°. The wavelengths responsible for producing this HO_(x) must be longer than 650 nm because the flux at shorter wavelengths is significantly attenuated at high SZA by scattering and absorption. Provided that the sources involve only a single photon, the strength of the bonds being broken must be < 45 kcal mole^(−1). We speculate that peroxynitric acid (HNO_4) dissociates after excitation to an unknown excited state with an integrated band cross section of 2-3 × 10^(−20) cm^(2) molecule^(−1) nm (650 < λ < 1250 nm)
Comparison of modeled and observed values of NO_2 and JNO_2 during the Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region in Summer (POLARIS) mission
Stratospheric measurements of NO, NO_(2), O_(3), ClO, and HO_(2) were made during spring, early summer, and late summer in the Arctic region during 1997 as part of the Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region in Summer (POLARIS) field campaign. In the sunlit atmosphere, NO_(2) and NO are in steady state through NO2 photolysis and reactions involving O_(3), ClO, BrO, and HO_(2). By combining observations of O_(3), ClO, and HO_(2), observed and modeled values of the NO_(2) photolysis rate coefficient (JNO_(2)), and model estimates of BrO, several comparisons are made between steady state and measured values of both NO_(2) and JNO_(2). An apparent seasonal dependence in discrepancies between calculated and measured values was found; however, a source for this dependence could not be identified. Overall, the mean linear fits in the various comparisons show agreement within 19%, well within the combined uncertainties (±50 to 70%). These results suggest that photochemistry controlling the NO_(2)/NO abundance ratio is well represented throughout much of the sunlit lower stratosphere. A reduction in the uncertainty of laboratory determinations of the rate coefficient of NO + O_(3) → NO_(2) + O_(2) would aid future analyses of these or similar atmospheric observations
Unveiling professional development: A critical review of stage models
In research across professions, the development of professional skill traditionally was seen as a process of accumulation of knowledge and skills, promoted by practical experience. More recently, this view has been modified to incorporate skillful know-how that is progressively acquired by passing through developmental stages, such as novice, competent, and expert. The authors of this article critically review contemporary stage models that are typically applied across professions. Their principal critique is that a focus on stages veils or conceals more fundamental aspects of professional skill development. On the basis of their critique, the authors propose an alternative model that builds on the strengths of previous models while seeking to overcome their main limitations. Finally, the authors outline the implications of their alternative model for professional education, workplace practices, and research on professional development
A Dynamic and Complex Network Regulates the Heterosis of Yield-Correlated Traits in Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)
Although much research has been conducted, the genetic architecture of heterosis remains ambiguous. To unravel the genetic architecture of heterosis, a reconstructed F2 population was produced by random intercross among 202 lines of a double haploid population in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Both populations were planted in three environments and 15 yield-correlated traits were measured, and only seed yield and eight yield-correlated traits showed significant mid-parent heterosis, with the mean ranging from 8.7% (branch number) to 31.4% (seed yield). Hundreds of QTL and epistatic interactions were identified for the 15 yield-correlated traits, involving numerous variable loci with moderate effect, genome-wide distribution and obvious hotspots. All kinds of mode-of-inheritance of QTL (additive, A; partial-dominant, PD; full-dominant, D; over-dominant, OD) and epistatic interactions (additive × additive, AA; additive × dominant/dominant × additive, AD/DA; dominant × dominant, DD) were observed and epistasis, especially AA epistasis, seemed to be the major genetic basis of heterosis in rapeseed. Consistent with the low correlation between marker heterozygosity and mid-parent heterosis/hybrid performance, a considerable proportion of dominant and DD epistatic effects were negative, indicating heterozygosity was not always advantageous for heterosis/hybrid performance.
