Agent-Based Simulation on Women's Role in a Family Line on Civil Service Examination in Chinese History
In this paper, following our previous work on civil service examinations in imperial China, we investigate women's role in a Chinese historical family line using an agent-based simulation (ABS) model with a grid oriented genetic algorithm (GOGA) framework. We utilize a GOGA framework, because our ABS had such large parameter spaces with real values that it required much greater computational resources. First, we studied the genealogical records. Second, based on that study, we implemented an agent-based model with the family lines branched out into two clusters to compare different family norms. Third, using an "inverse simulation" technique, we optimized the agent-based model in order to fit the simulation profiles to real profile data with real-coded GA. From these intensive experiments, we have found that (1) The combined influence of the father, uncle, mother and the aunt has important significance in maintaining a successful family norm, and (2) a particular role of the aunt to pass it on as well.Agent-Based Simulation, Grid Oriented Genetic Algorithm, Inverse Simulation, Family Norm, Civil Service Examination
Search for Acoustic Signals from Ultra-High Energy Neutrinos in 1500 km^3 of Sea Water
An underwater acoustic sensor array spanning ~1500 km^3 is used to search for
cosmic-ray neutrinos of ultra-high energies (UHE, E > 10^18 eV). Approximately
328 million triggers accumulated over an integrated 130 days of data taking are
analysed. The sensitivity of the experiment is determined from a Monte Carlo
simulation of the array using recorded noise conditions and expected waveforms.
Two events are found to have properties compatible with showers in the energy
range 10^24 to 5x10^24 eV and 10^22 to 5x10^22 eV. Since the understanding of
impulsive backgrounds is limited, a flux upper limit is set providing the most
sensitive limit on UHE neutrinos using the acoustic technique.Comment: Submitted to PRD. 8 pages, 12 figure

B^0-\bar B^0 Mixing in Gauge-Higgs Unification
We discuss flavor mixing and resulting Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC)
in a five dimensional SU(3)_color \otimes SU(3) \otimes U'(1) gauge-Higgs
unification. Flavor mixing is realized by the fact that the bulk and brane
localized mass terms are not diagonalized simultaneously. As the concrete FCNC
processes, we calculate the rate of B^0_d-\bar B^0_d mixing and B^0_s-\bar
B^0_s mixing due to the exchange of non-zero Kaluza-Klein gluons at the tree
level. We obtain a lower bound on the compactification scale of order O(TeV) by
comparing our prediction on the mass difference of neutral B meson with the
recent experimental data.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with
