    First-order magnetic and structural phase transitions in Fe1+y_{1+y}Sex_xTe1−x_{1-x}

    Full text link
    We use bulk magnetic susceptibility, electronic specific heat, and neutron scattering to study structural and magnetic phase transitions in Fe1+y_{1+y}Se% x_xTe1−x_{1-x}. Fe1.068_{1.068}Te exhibits a first order phase transition near 67 K with a tetragonal to monoclinic structural transition and simultaneously develops a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order responsible for the entropy change across the transition. Systematic studies of FeSe%_{1-x}Tex_x system reveal that the AF structure and lattice distortion in these materials are different from those of FeAs-based pnictides. These results call into question the conclusions of present density functional calculations, where FeSe1−x_{1-x}Tex_x and FeAs-based pnictides are expected to have similar Fermi surfaces and therefore the same spin-density-wave AF order.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Hepatocellular carcinoma detected by regular surveillance: Does timely confirmation of diagnosis matter?

    AbstractBackgroundAlthough current guidelines recommended surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma, prognosis in patients undergoing enhanced follow-up has yet to be evaluated.AimsExamine outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed during enhanced follow-up.MethodsDuring 2010–2012, 194 patients underwent ultrasonography surveillance were diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and divided into: (A) immediate diagnosis (N=105, 54.1%) after positive ultrasonography, (B) enhanced follow-up: (N=38, 19.6%) for initial negative recall procedures, (C) late call back: (N=28, 14.4%) recall procedures were deferred after positive ultrasonography, and (D) beyond ultrasonography: (N=23, 11.9%) surveillance ultrasonography had been negative.ResultsMedian time from positive ultrasonography to confirmation of hepatocellular carcinoma were 9.5 months (2–67) in the Group B and 6.5 months (3–44) in the Group C. Stage distribution and 3-year survival rates were similar amongst all Groups. Surveillance intervals longer than 6 months were associated with the non-curative stage (3.7% vs. 12.5%, p=0.04). Nine (4.6%) patients underwent surveillance were diagnosed as Barcelona-Clinic Liver Cancer stage C.ConclusionEnhanced follow-up by current guidelines is appropriate that treatment can be deferred until a definite diagnosis. Despite optimal surveillance interval and recall policies, few non-curative stage diagnoses seemed inevitable under current standard of care

    Decision Theory-Based COI-SNP Tagging Approach for 126 Scombriformes Species Tagging

    The mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) is commonly used for DNA barcoding in animals. However, most of the COI barcode nucleotides are conserved and sequences longer than about 650 base pairs increase the computational burden for species identification. To solve this problem, we propose a decision theory-based COI SNP tagging (DCST) approach that focuses on the discrimination of species using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as the variable nucleotides of the sequences of a group of species. Using the example of 126 teleost mackerel fish species (order: Scombriformes), we identified 281 SNPs by alignment and trimming of their COI sequences. After decision rule making, 49 SNPs in 126 fish species were determined using the scoring system of the DCST approach. These COI-SNP barcodes were finally transformed into one-dimensional barcode images. Our proposed DCST approach simplifies the computational complexity and identifies the most effective and fewest SNPs to resolve or discriminate species for species tagging

    Full-Color Micro-LED Devices Based on Quantum Dots

    Quantum dots (QDs) show remarkable optical and electrical characteristics. They offer the advantage of combining micro-LEDs (μLEDs) for full-color display devices due to their exceptional features. In addition, μLED used in conjunction with QDs as color-conversion layers also provide efficient white LEDs for high-speed visible light communication (VLC). In this article, we comprehensively review recent progress in QD-based μLED devices. It includes the research status of various QDs and white LEDs based on QDs’ color conversion layers. The fabrication of QD-based high-resolution full-color μLEDs is also discussed. Including charge-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL), aerosol jet printing, and super inkjet printing methods to fabricate QD-based μLEDs. The use of quantum dot photoresist in combination with semipolar μLEDs is also described. Finally, we discuss the research of QD-based μLEDs for visible light communication

    Persistent surgical wound bleeding: A rare condition related to acquired hemophilia A

    SummaryAcquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare condition that predisposes affected patients to a bleeding tendency, even after a trivial physical insult. We present our experience with a 45-year-old male patient who was referred to our institute because of persistent bleeding from a left forearm surgical wound after fasciotomy. He was diagnosed as having AHA. Surgical treatment in combination with recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) led to a satisfactory result. Clinical awareness and multidisciplinary professional connections are necessary in the treatment of AHA. Acquired hemophilia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with uncontrolled bleeding episodes

    Properties enhancement of PS nanocomposites through the POSS surfactants

    Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-clay hybrids of polystyrene are prepared by two organically modified clays using POSS-NH 2 and C 20 -POSS as intercalated agents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies show the formation of these POSS/clay/PS nanocomposites in all cases with the disappearance of the peaks corresponding to the basal spacing of MMT. Transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate the morphology of these nanocomposites and indicates that these nanocomposites are composed of a random dispersion of exfoliated clay platelets throughout the PS matrix. Incorporation of these exfoliated clay platelets into the PS matrix led to effectively increase in glass transition temperature (T g ), thermal decomposition temperature (T d ), and the maximum reduction in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is ca. 40% for the C 20 -POSS/clay nanocomposite
