A 0.8 V T Network-Based 2.6 GHz Downconverter RFIC
A 2.6 GHz downconverter RFIC is designed and implemented using a 0.18 μm CMOS standard process. An important goal of the design is to achieve the high linearity that is required in WiMAX systems with a low supply voltage. A passive T phase-shift network is used as an RF input stage in a Gilbert cell to reduce supply voltage. A single supply voltage of 0.8 V is used with a power consumption of 5.87 mW. The T network-based downconverter achieves a conversion gain (CG) of 5 dB, a single-sideband noise figure (NF) of 16.16 dB, an RF-to-IF isolation of greater than 20 dB, and an input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of 1 dBm when the LO power of -13 dBm is applied
The Megamaser Cosmology Project. V. An Angular Diameter Distance to NGC 6264 at 140 Mpc
We present the direct measurement of the Hubble constant, yielding the direct
measurement of the angular-diameter distance to NGC 6264 using the HO
megamaser technique. Our measurement is based on sensitive observations of the
circumnuclear megamaser disk from four observations with the Very Long Baseline
Array, the Green Bank Telescope and the Effelsberg Telescope. We also monitored
the maser spectral profile for 2.3 years using the Green Bank Telescope to
measure accelerations of maser lines by tracking their line-of-sight velocities
as they change with time. The measured accelerations suggest that the systemic
maser spots have a significantly wider radial distribution than in the
archetypal megamaser in NGC 4258. We model the maser emission as arising from a
circumnuclear disk with orbits dominated by the central black hole. The best
fit of the data gives a Hubble constant of 689 km s
Mpc, which corresponds to an angular-diameter distance of 14419
Mpc. In addition, the fit also gives a mass of the central black hole of
(3.090.42) . The result demonstrates the
feasibility of measuring distances to galaxies located well into the Hubble

Quantifying flow and stress in ice mélange, the world’s largest granular material.
Tidewater glacier fjords are often filled with a collection of calved icebergs, brash ice, and sea ice. For glaciers with high calving rates, this “m ́elange” of ice can be jam-packed, so that the flow of ice fragments is mostly determined by granular interactions. In the jammed state, ice m ́elange has been hypothesized to influence iceberg calving and capsize, dispersion and attenuation of ocean waves, injection of freshwater into fjords, and fjord circulation. However, detailed measurements of ice m ́elange are lacking due to difficulties in instrumenting remote, ice-choked fjords. Here we characterize the flow and associated stress in icem ́elange, using a combination of terrestrial radar data, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations. We find that, during periods of terminus quiescence, ice m ́elange experiences laminar flow over timescales of hours to days. The uniform flow fields are bounded by shear margins along fjord walls where force chains between granular icebergs terminate. In addition, the average force per unit width that is transmitted to the glacier terminus, which can exceed 107N/m, increases exponentially with them ́elange length-to-width ratio. These “buttressing” forces are sufficiently high to inhibit the initiation of large-scale calving events, supporting the notion that ice m ́elange can be viewed as a weak granular ice shelf that transmits stresses from fjord walls back to glacier termini.Ye
Spin gap behavior in CuScGeO by Sc nuclear magnetic resonance
We report the results of a Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study
on the quasi-one-dimensional compound CuScGeO at
temperatures between 4 and 300 K. This material has been a subject of current
interest due to indications of spin gap behavior. The temperature-dependent NMR
shift exhibits a character of low-dimensional magnetism with a negative broad
maximum at 170 K. Below , the NMR shifts and
spin lattice relaxation rates clearly indicate activated responses, confirming
the existence of a spin gap in CuScGe% O. The experimental
NMR data can be well fitted to the spin dimer model, yielding a spin gap value
of about 275 K which is close to the 25 meV peak found in the inelastic neutron
scattering measurement. A detailed analysis further points out that the nearly
isolated dimer picture is proper for the understanding of spin gap nature in

On the use of colour reflectivity plots to monitor the structure of the troposphere and stratosphere
The radar reflectivity, defined as the range squared corrected power of VHF radar echoes, can be used to monitor and study the temporal development of inversion layer, frontal boundaries and convective turbulence. From typical featurs of upward or downward motion of reflectivity structures, the advection/convection of cold and warm air can be predicted. High resolution color plots appear to be useful to trace and to study the life history of these structures, particularly their persistency, descent and ascent. These displays allow an immediate determination of the tropopause height as well as the determination of the tropopause structure. The life history of warm fronts, cold fronts, and occlusions can be traced, and these reflectivity plots allow detection of even very weak events which cannot be seen in the traditional meteorological data sets. The life history of convective turbulence, particular evolving from the planetary boundary layer, can be tracked quite easily. Its development into strong convection reaching the middle troposphere can be followed and predicted
Observations of breakup processes of liquid jets using real-time X-ray radiography
To unravel the liquid-jet breakup process in the nondilute region, a newly developed system of real-time X-ray radiography, an advanced digital image processor, and a high-speed video camera were used. Based upon recorded X-ray images, the inner structure of a liquid jet during breakup was observed. The jet divergence angle, jet breakup length, and fraction distributions along the axial and transverse directions of the liquid jets were determined in the near-injector region. Both wall- and free-jet tests were conducted to study the effect of wall friction on the jet breakup process
