The Vlasov limit and its fluctuations for a system of particles which interact by means of a wave field
In two recent publications [Commun. PDE, vol.22, p.307--335 (1997), Commun.
Math. Phys., vol.203, p.1--19 (1999)], A. Komech, M. Kunze and H. Spohn studied
the joint dynamics of a classical point particle and a wave type generalization
of the Newtonian gravity potential, coupled in a regularized way. In the
present paper the many-body dynamics of this model is studied. The Vlasov
continuum limit is obtained in form equivalent to a weak law of large numbers.
We also establish a central limit theorem for the fluctuations around this

Adjoint bi-continuous semigroups and semigroups on the space of measures
For a given bi-continuous semigroup T on a Banach space X we define its
adjoint on an appropriate closed subspace X^o of the norm dual X'. Under some
abstract conditions this adjoint semigroup is again bi-continuous with respect
to the weak topology (X^o,X). An application is the following: For K a Polish
space we consider operator semigroups on the space C(K) of bounded, continuous
functions (endowed with the compact-open topology) and on the space M(K) of
bounded Baire measures (endowed with the weak*-topology). We show that
bi-continuous semigroups on M(K) are precisely those that are adjoints of a
bi-continuous semigroups on C(K). We also prove that the class of bi-continuous
semigroups on C(K) with respect to the compact-open topology coincides with the
class of equicontinuous semigroups with respect to the strict topology. In
general, if K is not Polish space this is not the case
Time Scales in Spectator Fragmentation
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of p-alpha, d-alpha, and t-alpha
from spectator decays following Au + Au collisions at 1000 AMeV have been
measured with an highly efficient detector hodoscope. The constructed
correlation functions indicate a moderate expansion and low breakup densities
similar to assumptions made in statistical multifragmentation models. In
agreement with a volume breakup rather short time scales were deduced employing
directional cuts in proton-proton correlations.

Approximating the coefficients in semilinear stochastic partial differential equations
We investigate, in the setting of UMD Banach spaces E, the continuous
dependence on the data A, F, G and X_0 of mild solutions of semilinear
stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative noise of the form dX(t) =
[AX(t) + F(t,X(t))]dt + G(t,X(t))dW_H(t), X(0)=X_0, where W_H is a cylindrical
Brownian motion on a Hilbert space H. We prove continuous dependence of the
compensated solutions X(t)-e^{tA}X_0 in the norms
L^p(\Omega;C^\lambda([0,T];E)) assuming that the approximating operators A_n
are uniformly sectorial and converge to A in the strong resolvent sense, and
that the approximating nonlinearities F_n and G_n are uniformly Lipschitz
continuous in suitable norms and converge to F and G pointwise. Our results are
applied to a class of semilinear parabolic SPDEs with finite-dimensional

Can be gravitational waves markers for an extra-dimension?
The main issue of the present letter is to fix specific features (which turn
out being independent of extradimension size) of gravitational waves generated
before a dimensional compactification process. Valuable is the possibility to
detect our prediction from gravitational wave experiment without high energy
laboratory investigation. In particular we show how gravitational waves can
bring information on the number of Universe dimensions. Within the framework of
Kaluza-Klein hypotheses, a different morphology arises between waves generated
before than the compactification process settled down and ordinary
4-dimensional waves. In the former case the scalar and tensor degrees of
freedom can not be resolved. As a consequence if were detected gravitational
waves having the feature here predicted (anomalous polarization amplitudes),
then they would be reliable markers for the existence of an extra dimension.Comment: 5 pages, two figure, to appear on Int. Journ. Mod. Phys.
What Powers Ultra-luminous IRAS Galaxies?
We present an ISO SWS and ISOPHOT-S, mid-infrared spectroscopic survey of 15
ultra-luminous IRAS galaxies. We combine the survey results with a detailed
case study, based on near-IR and mm imaging spectroscopy, of one of the sample
galaxies (UGC 5101). We compare the near- and mid-IR characteristics of these
ultra-luminous galaxies to ISO and literature data of thirty starburst and
active galactic nuclei (AGN), template galaxies. We find that
1) 70-80% of the ultra-luminous IRAS galaxies in our sample are predominantly
powered by recently formed massive stars. 20-30% are powered by a central AGN.
These conclusions are based on a new infrared 'diagnostic diagram' involving
the ratio of high to low excitation mid-IR emission lines on the one hand, and
on the strength of the 7.7um PAH feature on the other hand.
2) at least half of the sources probably have simultaneously an active
nucleus and starburst activity in a 1-2 kpc diameter circum-nuclear disk/ring.
3) the mid-infrared emitting regions are highly obscured. After correction
for these extinctions, we estimate that the star forming regions in ULIRGs have
ages between 10^7 and 10^8 years, similar to but somewhat larger than those
found in lower luminosity starburst galaxies.
4) in the sample we have studied there is no obvious trend for the AGN
component to dominate in the most compact, and thus most advanced mergers.
Instead, at any given time during the merger evolution, the time dependent
compression of the circum-nuclear interstellar gas, the accretion rate onto the
central black hole and the associated radiation efficiency may determine

Thermal and Chemical Freeze-out in Spectator Fragmentation
Isotope temperatures from double ratios of hydrogen, helium, lithium,
beryllium, and carbon isotopic yields, and excited-state temperatures from
yield ratios of particle-unstable resonances in 4He, 5Li, and 8Be, were
determined for spectator fragmentation, following collisions of 197Au with
targets ranging from C to Au at incident energies of 600 and 1000 MeV per
nucleon. A deviation of the isotopic from the excited-state temperatures is
observed which coincides with the transition from residue formation to
multi-fragment production, suggesting a chemical freeze-out prior to thermal

Interaction of photons with plasmas and liquid metals: photoabsorption and scattering
Formulas to describe the photoabsorption and the photon scattering by a
plasma or a liquid metal are derived in a unified manner with each other. It is
shown how the nuclear motion, the free-electron motion and the core-electron
behaviour in each ion in the system determine the structure of photoabsorption
and scattering in an electron-ion mixture. The absorption cross section in the
dipole approximation consists of three terms which represent the absorption
caused by the nuclear motion, the absorption owing to the free-electron motion
producing optical conductivity or inverse Bremsstrahlung, and the absorption
ascribed to the core-electron behaviour in each ion with the Doppler
correction. Also, the photon scattering formula provides an analysis method for
experiments observing the ion-ion dynamical structure factor (DSF), the
electron-electron DSF giving plasma oscillations, and the core-electron DSF
yielding the X-ray Raman (Compton) scattering with a clear definition of the
background scattering for each experiment, in a unified manner. A formula for
anomalous X-ray scattering is also derived for a liquid metal. At the same
time, Thomson scattering in plasma physics is discussed from this general point

Asymptotic Behaviour of Inhomogeneous String Cosmologies
The asymptotic behaviour at late times of inhomogeneous axion-dilaton
cosmologies is investigated. The space-times considered here admit two abelian
space-like Killing vectors. These space-times evolve towards an anisotropic
universe containing gravitational radiation. Furthermore, a peeling-off
behaviour of the Weyl tensor and the antisymmetric tensor field strength is
