    A modular and interactive OLED-based lighting system

    The concept of a flexible, large-area, organic light emitting diode (OLED)-based lighting system with a modular structure and built-in intelligent light management is introduced. Such a flexible, thin, portable lighting system with discreetly integrated electronics is important in order to allow the implementation of the lighting system into a variety of places, such as cars and temporary expedition areas. A modular construction of an OLED lighting panel makes it possible to control each OLED cell individually. This not only enables us to counteract aging or degradation effects in the OLED cells but it also allows individual OLED module brightness control to support human or ambient interaction based on integrated or centralized sensors. Moreover, integrating the driving electronics in the backplane of an OLED module improves the energy efficiency of operating large OLED panels. The thin, modular construction and individual, dynamic control are successfully demonstrated

    Coping with Stress of Nurses Employed in the Internal Medicine and Surgical Departments

    Introduction. Stress is a state of tension that arises when events or requests from the environment are assessed as threatening or too demanding. in the process of coping, we use different cognitive and behavioral strategies. problem-oriented coping involves strategies aimed at changing or removing stressors. emotion-focused coping encompasses stress-induced arousal management strategies. no coping strategy is universally effective, but the success of coping is assessed in the interaction of an individual’s characteristics and a stressful situation. The prevalence of individual coping patterns among nurses may depend on their workplace. Aim. To determine nurses in the internal medicine and surgical departments of two croatian hospitals cope with stress. Methods. The participants were 163 nurses from the internal medicine and surgical departments of the Sisak general Hospital “dr. Ivo Pedišić” and the general Hospital Karlovac. The measuring instruments used are the Questionnaire on how to deal with stress and the Scale for assessing the importance of events and the possibility of control. Results. The most common ways of coping with stress are planned problem solving, seeking social support, and self-control, while the rarest way of coping is avoidance. nurses perceive the success of coping with stress as moderate, and the degree of control over stressful situations as rather low. Stressful situations are most often perceived as a threat, and least often as a challenge.With the perception of a greater degree of control over the situation, they more often choose to accept responsibility as a way of coping. In internal medicine departments, stressful events are assessed as significantly more disturbing than in surgical departments. Conclusion. The results confirm that for further education of nurses on successful coping with stress, it is important to examine and further explore cognitive processes in selecting ways of coping: the meaning they attach to the situation, assessing control over the situation, and self-assessing coping success

    The mitochondrial genome of Iberobaenia (Coleoptera: Iberobaeniidae): first rearrangement of protein-coding genes in the beetles

    International audienceThe complete mitochondrial genome of the recently discovered beetle family Iberobaeniidae is described and compared with known coleopteran mitogenomes. The mitochondrial sequence was obtained by shotgun metagenomic sequencing using the Illumina Miseq technology and resulted in an average coverage of 130 × and a minimum coverage of 35×. The mitochondrial genome of Iberobaeniidae includes 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, 22 tRNAs genes, and 1 putative control region, and showed a unique rearrangement of protein-coding genes. This is the first rearrangement affecting the relative position of protein-coding and ribosomal genes reported for the order Coleoptera

    Unlocking the mystery of the mid‑Cretaceous Mysteriomorphidae (Coleoptera: Elateroidea) and modalities in transiting from gymnosperms to angiosperms

    The monospecific family Mysteriomorphidae was recently described based on two fossil specimens from the Late Cretaceous Kachin amber of northern Myanmar. The family was placed in Elateriformia incertae sedis without a clear list of characters that define it either in Elateroidea or in Byrrhoidea. We report here four additional adult specimens of the same lineage, one of which was described using a successful reconstruction from a CT-scan analysis to better observe some characters. The new specimens enabled us to considerably improve the diagnosis of Mysteriomorphidae. The family is definitively placed in Elateroidea, and we hypothesize its close relationship with Elateridae. Similarly, there are other fossil families of beetles that are exclusively described from Cretaceous ambers. These lineages may have been evolutionarily replaced by the ecological revolution launched by angiosperms that introduced new co-associations with taxa. These data indicate a macroevolutionary pattern of replacement that could be extended to other insect groups

    Atomic layer deposition and properties of mixed Ta2O5 and ZrO2 films

    Thin solid films consisting of ZrO2 and Ta2O5 were grown by atomic layer deposition at 300 degrees C. Ta2O5 films doped with ZrO2, TaZr2.75O8 ternary phase, or ZrO2 doped with Ta2O5 were grown to thickness and composition depending on the number and ratio of alternating ZrO2 and Ta2O5 deposition cycles. All the films grown exhibited resistive switching characteristics between TiN and Pt electrodes, expressed by repetitive current-voltage loops. The most reliable windows between high and low resistive states were observed in Ta2O5 films mixed with relatively low amounts of ZrO2, providing Zr to Ta cation ratio of 0.2.     Unveiled: Prototrichalus from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber represents a yet oldest record of Ischaliidae Blair, 1920 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea)

    The genus Prototrichalus Molino-Olmedo, Ferreira, Branham and Ivie, 2020 known from Burmese amber was initially attributed to the family of net-winged beetles (Coleoptera: Lycidae) in the superfamily Elateroidea, and soon after transferred to Tenebrionoidea incertae sedis and compared with Ischalia Pascoe, 1860. Here, we examined additional material of Prototrichalus and confirmed it is the first known Mesozoic subgroup of the family of false fire-coloured beetles (Coleoptera: Ischaliidae) in superfamily Tenebrionoidea. This oldest yet available record of the Ischaliidae suggests their at least Cretaceous origin. A re-defined set of the diagnostic features is provided for the family Ischaliidae to incorporate the unique combination of morphological features of Prototrichalus. One new species, P. jingpo Telnov and Kundrata, sp. nov., is described and compared with its congeners. A key to supraspecific taxa of Ischaliidae and an annotated checklist of extinct species of the family are provided.Crown Copyright © 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Mastigocoleidae fam. nov., a New Mesozoic Beetle Family and the Early Evolution of Dryopoidea (Coleoptera)

    With some 3,700 described species, Dryopoidea are a moderately diverse superfamily of beetles whose position within basal Polyphaga has been historically difficult to elucidate. Members of most extant dryopoid families are set apart from the majority of other polyphagans by their association with aquatic habitats, but little is known about the origin of these derived life habits and the phylogeny of the superfamily. Here we describe Mastigocoleidae Tihelka, Jäch, Kundrata & Cai fam. nov., a new family of Mesozoic dryopoids represented by fossils from the Cretaceous Yixian Formation in northeastern China (undescribed species; ~125 Ma), Crato Formation in northeastern Brazil (Mastigocoleus rhinoceros Tihelka & Cai gen. et sp. nov.; ~113 Ma), and amber from northern Myanmar (Mastigocoleus resinicola Tihelka & Cai gen. et sp. nov. and Cretaceocoleus saetosus Tihelka, Kundrata & Cai gen. et sp. nov.; ~99 Ma). Integrating the findings of recent molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses, we recover Mastigocoleidae as an early-diverging dryopoid clade sister to the families Lutrochidae and Dryopidae, or less likely as a group of putative stem-dryopoids. Mastigocoleidae are most distinctly separated from all other dryopoid families by their whip-like antennae, with 11 antennomeres, reaching to the pronotal base, and with the scape broadest and longest, a short pedicel, and antennomeres II-XI more or less distinctively gradually tapering toward the apex. Mastigocoleidae indicate that the last common ancestor of Dryopoidea was likely terrestrial in the adult stage, and document character acquisitions associated with a specialization for aquatic life

    Value and Self-Concept: A Study on Reading Habits among Primary School Students in Sarawak

    This study analyses the extent to which students‟ value of reading and self-concepts as readers affect their motivation to read. The participants included 45 students from a rural primary school in Malaysia aged 8 to 10 years old. They completed the Motivation to Read Profile-Revised (MRP-R) designed by Malloy et al. (2013) which consists of a survey and conversational interview to shed light on students‟ attitudes towards reading. The results from the survey demonstrated that the students held high self-concepts of themselves as readers and were able to use reading comprehension strategies. Overall they found reading enjoyable, and preferred collaborative reading tasks and books with visuals. Additionally, students were motivated by engaging classroom activities and trips to the library, and many students preferred digital text. However, the students found reading in another language to be challenging. Through these results, the role of the teacher is highlighted as essential in motivating students to read. By providing opportunities for students to read a variety of texts at students‟ reading levels and on different topics, in both students‟ native languages and target language. Students may gain reading motivation when they can choose what to read and when instructors create engaging activities that encourage not only independent reading, but incorporate a social aspect as well. Schools may also consider using technology to motivate young readers, and a reading culture should be supported in the students‟ homes to further encourage lifelong reading habits
