Achievement Goals and Identity Status
The study of achievement goals has an extensive history in the field of education. Research centers on the concept of learning or mastery goals versus performance goals (Elliot & Murayama, 2008). This research examines identity as it relates to mastery and performance for undergraduate college students. It examines three of the identity statuses conceptualized by Marcia (1966) – achievement, moratorium, and foreclosure, in relationship to achievement goal orientations (Marcia, 2009; Negru, Pop, & Opre, 2013). Potentially, this research will further inform the field of counseling psychology about factors related to the success and failure of students in colleges and universities
Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars: 10 years of INTEGRAL observations
During the last 10 years, INTEGRAL made a unique contribution to the study of
accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs), discovering three of the 14
sources now known of this class. Besides increasing the number of known AMXPs,
INTEGRAL also carried out observations of these objects above 20 keV,
substantially advancing our understanding of their behaviour. We present here a
review of all the AMXPs observed with INTEGRAL and discuss the physical
interpretation of their behaviour in the X-ray domain. We focus in particular
on the lightcurve profile during outburst, as well as the timing, spectral, and

FUSE Spectra of the Black Hole Binary LMC X-3
Far-ultraviolet spectra of LMC X-3 were taken covering photometric phases
0.47 to 0.74 in the 1.7-day orbital period of the black-hole binary (phase zero
being superior conjunction of the X-ray source). The continuum is faint and
flat, but appears to vary significantly during the observations. Concurrent
RXTE/ASM observations show the system was in its most luminous X-ray state
during the FUSE observations. The FUV spectrum contains strong terrestrial
airglow emission lines, while the only stellar lines clearly present are
emissions from the O VI resonance doublet. Their flux does not change
significantly during the FUSE observations. These lines are modelled as two
asymmetrical profiles, including the local ISM absorptions due to C II and
possibly O VI. Velocity variations of O VI emission are consistent with the
orbital velocity of the black hole and provide a new constraint on its mass.Comment: 12 pages including 1 table, 4 diagrams To appear in A
Difference of optical conductivity between one- and two-dimensional doped nickelates
We study the optical conductivity in doped nickelates, and find the dramatic
difference of the spectrum in the gap (\alt4 eV) between one- (1D)
and two-dimensional (2D) nickelates. The difference is shown to be caused by
the dependence of hopping integral on dimensionality. The theoretical results
explain consistently the experimental data in 1D and
2D nickelates, YCaBaNiO and LaSrNiO,
respectively. The relation between the spectrum in the X-ray aborption
experiments and the optical conductivity in LaSrNiO is

Initial vs. non-initial placement of agent constructions in spoken clauses: A corpus-based study of language production under time pressure
In this exploratory study we test the hypothesis that the retrieval from memory of proper noun Agents (PNAs) under processing pressure causes a greater proportion of such semantic arguments to be placed to the right of the initial position in a clause than would be the case if such retrieval from memory were not necessary. This effect is manifest in sports commentary. Processing pressure on sports commentators is modulated by the speed at which the sport is played and reported. Non-initial placement is also facilitated by formulae which have slots in non-initial position. It follows that the non-initial placement of PNAs is not always semantically or pragmatically motivated. This finding therefore runs counter to a strong form of the functionalist hypothesis that syntactic choices available in the systemic structure of the syntax of a language offer solely semantic or pragmatic choices. It is an open question in a weak functionalist account of language and language use how processing and communicative functions interact in general
High-Energy Emission From Millisecond Pulsars
The X-ray and gamma-ray spectrum of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars is
investigated in a model for acceleration and pair cascades on open field lines
above the polar caps. Although these pulsars have low surface magnetic fields,
their short periods allow them to have large magnetospheric potential drops,
but the majority do not produce sufficient pairs to completely screen the
accelerating electric field. The accelerating particles maintain high Lorentz
factors and undergo cyclotron resonant absorption of radio emission, that
produces and maintains a large pitch angle, resulting in a strong synchrotron
component. The resulting spectra consist of several distinct components:
curvature radiation from primary electrons dominating from 1 - 100 GeV,
synchrotron radiation from primary and secondary electrons dominating up to
about 100 MeV, and much weaker inverse-Compton radiation from primary electrons
at 0.1 - 1 TeV. We find that the relative size of these components depends on
pulsar period, period derivative, and neutron star mass and radius with the
level of the synchrotron component also depending sensitively on the radio
emission properties. This model is successful in describing the observed X-ray
and gamma-ray spectrum of PSR J0218+4232 as synchrotron radiation, peaking
around 100 MeV and extending up to a turnover around several GeV. The predicted
curvature radiation components from a number of millisecond pulsars, as well as
the collective emission from the millisecond pulsars in globular clusters,
should be detectable with AGILE and GLAST. We also discuss a hidden population
of X-ray-quiet and radio-quiet millisecond pulsars which have evolved below the
pair death line, some of which may be detectable by telescopes sensitive above
