Histologiczne i histochemiczne badania jelita grubego i cienkiego świnek morskich zarażonych Entamoeba histolytica
In order to gain better knowledge about pathomechanisms of amebosis, histological and histochemical studies were performed on large and small intestine of guinea pigs infected by PS-2 Entamoeba histolytica strain. Results of these studies showed that the presence of E. histolytica in large intestine caused also pathomorphological changes of small intestine: partial atrophy of villi, epithelium destruction, epithelial metaplasia, lacteral dilation, infiltration of mucous membrane by lymphocytes, plasmocytes and macrophages. Influence of this parasite on lowering of investigated enzyme reactions and reduction of mucus secretion in large intestine as well as in small intestine of infected animals were also shown. These result suggest influence of E. histolytica cytotoxins (studied earlier by others authors) on the enzymes activity in host tissues and next on the weakness of intracellular metabolism and on cells destruction. For induction of these changes the adhesion host cell-amoeba is not necessary
A CASE OF IMPORTED HUMAN BABESIOSIS IN POLAND
The first cae of human babesiosis in Poland imported from Brazil were ascertained in our Department. Diagnosis was based on hamster inoculation by intraperitonealy injection of patient's blood. In Giemsa stained erythrocytes characteristic forms of Babesia microti were detected
Objawowe i bezobjawowe inwazje Demodex spp. powiek u osób w różnych grupach wiekowych
Symptomic and asymptomic infections of Demodex spp. in eye lashes of patients of different age groups. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis were looked for on eyelashes sampled from 481 people, aged 3 through 96. The persons studied were divided into 9 age groups. Magnitude of the infection symptoms was assessed based on macroscopic changes of eye-lid edges and on interviews with patients. An increase of the prevalence of infection and intensification of the symptoms were observed to coincide with the age increase of the persons studied. No significant differences were demonstrated between the infection frequencies of women and men. Symptoms of ocular demodecosis were more frequent only in women of group III (aged 21-30) and group V (41-50) (p<0.05)
Acarological faunistic and statistical analysis of dust from various compartments of human dwellings in north-western Poland
The aim of this paper was to compare the species composition of mites in dust samples collected at different compartments of human dwellings of north-western (NW) Poland. In 30 urban apartments (Szczecin, Police, Pyrzyce and Łobez) and rural quarters (Przelewice, Brzesko Szczecińskie, Bylice, Krasne, Kąkolewice, Wierzchowo, Przeradz, Kłodzino) from NW Poland, 150 samples of dust were collected at 5 locations: bed area, bedroom carpet, sitting area in the living room, hall carpet, and kitchen floor. Mites were isolated using Berlese-Tüllgren extractors. The isolated dust mites belonged to the order Astigmata, families Pyroglyphidae: Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes, 1961, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouessart, 1987), Euroglyphus maynei (Cooreman, 1950) and Hirstia Hull, 1931; Chortoglyphidae: Chortoglyphus arcuatus (Troupeau, 1879) and Glycyphagidae: Gohieria fusca (Oudemans, 1902), Lepidoglyphus destructor (Schrank, 1781), and the order Prostigmata, family Cheyletidae: Cheyletus (Latreille, 1796). The most frequently observed were the species D. farinae (58.9%) and the representatives of the genus Cheyletus (30.6%). Statistically significant differences were found between: the number and concentration of D. farinae in the dust collected from beds in the bedroom and dust from the carpet in the bedroom, living room, hall and kitchen; the number of D. farinae in samples from the carpet in the bedroom and from the kitchen floor; the number and concentration of D. farinae in the dust from the living room and the dust in the hall and kitchen; the number of Cheyletus sp. in samples of dust from bed areas in the bedroom and the samples from the carpet in the bedroom, hall and kitchen; the number and concentration of Cheyletus sp. in dust samples collected from the carpet in the bedroom and samples from the kitchen; the concentration of Cheyletus sp. in dust collected from bed areas and samples from the floor in the hall and kitchen; the number of D. pteronyssinus in dust samples collected from bed areas in the bedroom and samples from the carpet in the bedroom. In conclusion, the number of mites D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus and Cheyletus sp. depended on the place where the mites were sampled. The greatest numbers of these species were observed in the bed areas in bedrooms. The tests confirmed the high occurrence of house dust mites in the apartments in north-western Poland, especially in the bed areas in the bedroom
Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus population in forests of north-western Poland
The ticks /xodes ricinus were collected during three growing seasons in forested areas of north-western Poland. The ticks were collected by flagging at 30 sites. The specimens collected (nymphs and adults) were subjected, after an appropiate treatment, to indirect immunofluorescence analysis (IFA). In addition, effects of temperature and atmospheric precipitation on the tick infection with the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi were investigated based on data supplied by the Institute of Meteorology.
A total of 8519 individuals of /. ricinus were collected at the sampling sites within May-October of three consecutive years. The pool of individuals obtained consisted of 7356 nymphs, 559 females, and 604 males. The B. burgdorferi prevalence varied rather widely, from 10 to 19%. Compared to nymphs, adult individuals showed a higher infection rate. A relationship between infection rate and /. ricinus activity in different years and months was studied in detail. The boreliosis risk was found to increase with increasing tick activity. On the other hand, no correlation was found between the meteorological parameters (temperature, precipitation), tick abundance, and the B. burgdorferi infection rate
