Diaquadichloridobis(pyridine-κN)manganese(II)
The molecular title compound, [MnCl2(C5H5N)2(H2O)2], lies about an inversion centre. The MnII atom is in an all-trans octahedral environment defined by two water molecules, two chloride anions and two pyridine ligands. An intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between a water molecule and a chloride anion bonded to an adjacent MnII atom generates an eight-membered ring. The crystal packing exhibits two intermolecular π–π stacking interactions between the aromatic rings, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.485 (12) and 3.532 (12) Å
Separable approximations of density matrices of composite quantum systems
We investigate optimal separable approximations (decompositions) of states
rho of bipartite quantum systems A and B of arbitrary dimensions MxN following
the lines of Ref. [M. Lewenstein and A. Sanpera, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 2261
(1998)]. Such approximations allow to represent in an optimal way any density
operator as a sum of a separable state and an entangled state of a certain
form. For two qubit systems (M=N=2) the best separable approximation has a form
of a mixture of a separable state and a projector onto a pure entangled state.
We formulate a necessary condition that the pure state in the best separable
approximation is not maximally entangled. We demonstrate that the weight of the
entangled state in the best separable approximation in arbitrary dimensions
provides a good entanglement measure. We prove in general for arbitrary M and N
that the best separable approximation corresponds to a mixture of a separable
and an entangled state which are both unique. We develop also a theory of
optimal separable approximations for states with positive partial transpose
(PPT states). Such approximations allow to decompose any density operator with
positive partial transpose as a sum of a separable state and an entangled PPT
state. We discuss procedures of constructing such decompositions.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
A Minimal Model for Quantum Gravity
We argue that the model of a quantum computer with N qubits on a quantum
space background, which is a fuzzy sphere with n=2^N elementary cells, can be
viewed as the minimal model for Quantum Gravity. In fact, it is discrete, has
no free parameters, is Lorentz invariant, naturally realizes the Holographic
Principle, and defines a subset of punctures of spin networks' edges of Loop
Quantum Gravity labelled by spins j=2^(N-1)-1/2. In this model, the discrete
area spectrum of the cells, which is not equally spaced, is given in units of
the minimal area of Loop Quantum Gravity (for j=1/2), and provides a discrete
emission spectrum for quantum black holes. When the black hole emits one string
of N bits encoded in one of the n cells, its horizon area decreases of an
amount equal to the area of one cell.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Contributed paper at DICE 2004, 1-4 September

Preparation of Well-Compatibilized PP/PC Blends and Foams Thereof
The performance of polypropylene-poly(ethylene brassylate) block and graft copolymers and a polypropylene-polycaprolactone graft copolymer as compatibilizers for polypropylene-rich polypropylene/bisphenol A polycarbonate (PP/PC, 80/20 wt/wt) blends was elucidated. The copolymers were synthesized either by metal-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization or transesterification of a presynthesized polyester, initiated by hydroxyl-functionalized PPs, which themselves were obtained by catalytic routes or reactive extrusion, respectively. Spectroscopic fingerprints of the copolymers from liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and rheology analyses of the blends indicated that the compatibilizers spontaneously organize at the interface of the two immiscible polymers leading to the formation of uniform, stable, nanophase morphologies. The effect of the compatibilizers on the performance of the PP/PC blends was evaluated, and well-compatibilized PP/PC blends showed improved melt strength and strain hardening when compared to pure PP. This was verified by the successful foam extrusion using isobutane as a blowing agent of well-compatibilized PP/PC blends to low-density PP-based foams, for which normally long-chain branched PP is required
New genetic and morphological evidence suggests a single hoaxer created ‘Piltdown man’
In 1912, palaeontologist Arthur Smith Woodward and amateur antiquarian and solicitor Charles Dawson announced the discovery of a fossil that supposedly provided a link between apes and humans: Eoanthropus dawsoni (Dawson's dawn man). The publication generated huge interest from scientists and the general public. However, ‘Piltdown man's’ initial celebrity has long been overshadowed by its subsequent infamy as one of the most famous scientific frauds in history. Our re-evaluation of the Piltdown fossils using the latest scientific methods (DNA analyses, high-precision measurements, spectroscopy and virtual anthropology) shows that it is highly likely that a single orang-utan specimen and at least two human specimens were used to create the fake fossils. The modus operandi was found consistent throughout the assemblage (specimens are stained brown, loaded with gravel fragments and restored using filling materials), linking all specimens from the Piltdown I and Piltdown II sites to a single forger—Charles Dawson. Whether Dawson acted alone is uncertain, but his hunger for acclaim may have driven him to risk his reputation and misdirect the course of anthropology for decades. The Piltdown hoax stands as a cautionary tale to scientists not to be led by preconceived ideas, but to use scientific integrity and rigour in the face of novel discoveries
The Biology and Economics of Coral Growth
To protect natural coral reefs, it is of utmost importance to understand how the growth of the main reef-building organisms—the zooxanthellate scleractinian corals—is controlled. Understanding coral growth is also relevant for coral aquaculture, which is a rapidly developing business. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of factors that can influence the growth of zooxanthellate scleractinian corals, with particular emphasis on interactions between these factors. Furthermore, the kinetic principles underlying coral growth are discussed. The reviewed information is put into an economic perspective by making an estimation of the costs of coral aquaculture
