Extreme throat initial data set and horizon area--angular momentum inequality for axisymmetric black holes
We present a formula that relates the variations of the area of extreme
throat initial data with the variation of an appropriate defined mass
functional. From this expression we deduce that the first variation, with fixed
angular momentum, of the area is zero and the second variation is positive
definite evaluated at the extreme Kerr throat initial data. This indicates that
the area of the extreme Kerr throat initial data is a minimum among this class
of data. And hence the area of generic throat initial data is bounded from
below by the angular momentum. Also, this result strongly suggests that the
inequality between area and angular momentum holds for generic asymptotically
flat axially symmetric black holes. As an application, we prove this inequality

On credit spread slopes and predicting bank risk
The authors examine whether credit-spread curves, engendered by a mandatory subordinated-debt requirement for banks, would help predict bank risk. They extract the credit-spread curves each quarter for each bank in our sample, and analyze the information content of credit-spread slopes. They find that credit-spread slopes are significant predictors of future credit spreads. However, credit-spread slopes do not provide significant additional information on future bank-risk variables, over and above other bank-specific and market-wide information.Bank capital ; Risk
Monitoring and controlling bank risk: does risky debt serve any purpose?
To examine whether mandating banks to issue subordinated debt would enhance market monitoring and control risk-taking, the authors extract the credit-spread curve for each banking firm in their sample. After controlling for changes in market and liquidity variables, they find that changes in credit spreads do not reflect changes in bank risk variables. The result is robust to firm type, examination rating, size, leverage, and profitability, as well as to different model specifications. They also find that issuing subordinated debt does not alter banks' risk-taking behavior. They conclude that a mandatory subordinated debt requirement for banks is unlikely to provide the intended benefits of enhancing risk-monitoring or controlling risk-taking.Bank capital ; Risk
The Prevalence of Inflammatory and Developmental Odontogenic Cysts in a Libyan Population
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of odontogenic jaw cysts in a Libyan population and to compare the data with previously published reports from other countries. Materials and methods- We retrieved and analyzed 2190 case notes and biopsy records of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Al Arab Medical Sciences University, Benghazi, Libya, dating from January 1990 to December 2005. There were 326 cases (14.8%) of diagnosed odontogenic cysts among the 2190 biopsies performed during this period. The cases were analyzed for age and sex distribution, site of presentation, association with impacted teeth, and the method of treatment.Results: The male to female ratio of patients was 1.3:1 Radicular cysts accounted for 222 cases (68.1%), followed by dentigerous cysts (n=49, 15%) and odontogenic keratocysts (n=43, 14.1%). Mean ages of the patients were, respectively, 31.7, 22.7 and 36.1 years. . The maxilla was more commonly involved than the mandible (1.3:1). The anterior maxilla was the commonest site (n=132, 37.4%) followed by the posterior mandible (n=96, 29.4%). Fifty three cases were associated with impacted teeth, and the highest frequency was for dentigerous cysts (n=37). Enucleation and curettage was performed on 300 patients, marsupialization on 14, and marginal/segmental resection on 12.Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first such study on a Libyan population. Our results are comparable to studies from other countries. Knowledge of the relative frequencies and sites of presentation of odontogenic cysts in different ethno-geographic backgrounds is essential for the early diagnosis and management of these benign yet potentially destructive lesions. SU(2) potentials in quantum gravity
We present investigations of the potential between static charges from a
simulation of quantum gravity coupled to an SU(2) gauge field on and simplicial lattices. In the well-defined phase of the
gravity sector where geometrical expectation values are stable, we study the
correlations of Polyakov loops and extract the corresponding potentials between
a source and sink separated by a distance . In the confined phase, the
potential has a linear form while in the deconfined phase, a screened Coulombic
behavior is found. Our results indicate that quantum gravitational effects do

Chi-square test on candidate events from CW signal coherent searches
In a blind search for continuous gravitational wave signals scanning a wide
frequency band one looks for candidate events with significantly large values
of the detection statistic. Unfortunately, a noise line in the data may also
produce a moderately large detection statistic.
In this paper, we describe how we can distinguish between noise line events
and actual continuous wave (CW) signals, based on the shape of the detection
statistic as a function of the signal's frequency. We will analyze the case of
a particular detection statistic, the F statistic, proposed by Jaranowski,
Krolak, and Schutz.
We will show that for a broad-band 10 hour search, with a false dismissal
rate smaller than 1e-6, our method rejects about 70 % of the large candidate
events found in a typical data set from the second science run of the Hanford

Mg/Ti multilayers: structural, optical and hydrogen absorption properties
Mg-Ti alloys have uncommon optical and hydrogen absorbing properties,
originating from a "spinodal-like" microstructure with a small degree of
chemical short-range order in the atoms distribution. In the present study we
artificially engineer short-range order by depositing Pd-capped Mg/Ti
multilayers with different periodicities and characterize them both
structurally and optically. Notwithstanding the large lattice parameter
mismatch between Mg and Ti, the as-deposited metallic multilayers show good
structural coherence. Upon exposure to H2 gas a two-step hydrogenation process
occurs, with the Ti layers forming the hydride before Mg. From in-situ
measurements of the bilayer thickness L at different hydrogen pressures, we
observe large out-of-plane expansions of the Mg and Ti layers upon
hydrogenation, indicating strong plastic deformations in the films and a
consequent shortening of the coherence length. Upon unloading at room
temperature in air, hydrogen atoms remain trapped in the Ti layers due to
kinetic constraints. Such loading/unloading sequence can be explained in terms
of the different thermodynamic properties of hydrogen in Mg and Ti, as shown by
diffusion calculations on a model multilayered systems. Absorption isotherms
measured by hydrogenography can be interpreted as a result of the elastic
clamping arising from strongly bonded Mg/Pd and broken Mg/Ti interfaces
