    Adiabatic Electron-Phonon Interaction and High-Temperature Thermodynamics of A15 Compounds

    Inelastic neutron scattering was used to measure the phonon densities of states of the A15 compounds V_3Si, V_3Ge, and V_3Co at temperatures from 10 to 1273 K. It was found that phonons in V_3Si and V_3Ge, which are superconducting at low temperatures, exhibit an anomalous stiffening with increasing temperature, whereas phonons in V_3Co have a normal softening behavior. First-principles calculations show that this anomalous increase in phonon frequencies at high temperatures originates with an adiabatic electron-phonon coupling mechanism. The anomaly is caused by the thermally induced broadening of sharp peaks in the electronic density of states of V_3Si and V_3Ge, which tends to decrease the electronic density at the Fermi level. These results show that the adiabatic electron-phonon coupling can influence the phonon thermodynamics at temperatures exceeding 1000 K

    Phonons in aluminum at high temperatures studied by inelastic neutron scattering

    Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on aluminum metal were performed at temperatures of 10, 150, 300, 525, and 775 K using direct-geometry Fermi chopper spectrometers. The temperature dependent phonon density of states (DOS) was determined from the scattering, and was used to fit Born–von Kármán models of lattice dynamics. The shifts in the phonon frequencies with increasing temperature were largely explained by the softening of the longitudinal force constants out to third nearest neighbors. A significant broadening of the phonon spectra at high temperatures was also measured. The phonon DOS was used to determine the vibrational contributions to the entropy of aluminum as a function of temperature. All other contributions to the entropy of aluminum were calculated or assessed, and the total entropy was in excellent agreement with the NIST-JANAF compilation [M. W. Chase, J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data Monogr. 9, 59 (1998)]. Anharmonic effects were attributed to phonon-phonon interactions. The quasiharmonic approximation was generally successful, but its weaknesses are discussed

    Measurements of elastic and inelastic neutron scatterings from elemental nickel were made at 10, 300, 575, 875, and 1275 K. The phonon densities of states (DOSs) were calculated from the inelastic scattering and were fit with Born–von Kármán models of the lattice dynamics. With ancillary data on thermal expansion and elastic moduli, we found a small, negative anharmonic contribution to the phonon entropy at high temperature. We used this to place bounds on the magnetic entropy of nickel. A significant broadening of the phonon DOS at elevated temperatures, another indication of anharmonicity, was also measured and quantified

    Electron-phonon interactions and high-temperature thermodynamics of vanadium and its alloys

    Inelastic neutron scattering was used to measure the phonon densities of states (DOSs) for pure V and solid solutions of V with 6 to 7at% of Co, Nb, and Pt, at temperatures from 10 K to 1323 K. Ancillary measurements of heat capacity and thermal expansion are reported on V and V-7at%Co and used to help identify the different sources of entropy. Pure V exhibits an anomalous anharmonic stiffening of phonons with increasing temperature. This anharmonicity is suppressed by Co and Pt, but not by isoelectronic Nb solutes. The changes in phonon frequency with alloying and with temperature both correlate to the decrease in electron density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level as calculated using density functional theory. The effects of both temperature and alloying can be understood in terms of an adiabatic electron-phonon interaction (EPI), which broadens sharp features in the electron DOS. These results show that the adiabatic EPI can influence the phonon thermodynamics at temperatures exceeding 1000 K, and that thermal trends of phonons may help assess the strength of the EPI

    Interface-mediated interactions: Entropic forces of curved membranes

    Particles embedded in a fluctuating interface experience forces and torques mediated by the deformations and by the thermal fluctuations of the medium. Considering a system of two cylinders bound to a fluid membrane we show that the entropic contribution enhances the curvature-mediated repulsion between the two cylinders. This is contrary to the usual attractive Casimir force in the absence of curvature-mediated interactions. For a large distance between the cylinders, we retrieve the renormalization of the surface tension of a flat membrane due to thermal fluctuations.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; final version, as appeared in Phys.     Stable Grothendieck polynomials and K-theoretic factor sequences

    We formulate a nonrecursive combinatorial rule for the expansion of the stable Grothendieck polynomials of [Fomin-Kirillov '94] in the basis of stable Grothendieck polynomials for partitions. This gives a common generalization, as well as new proofs of the rule of [Fomin-Greene '98] for the expansion of the stable Schubert polynomials into Schur polynomials, and the K-theoretic Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule of [Buch '02]. The proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted and Edelman-Greene insertion algorithms. Our results are applied to prove a number of new formulas and properties for K-theoretic quiver polynomials, and the Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82]. In particular, we provide the first KK-theoretic analogue of the factor sequence formula of [Buch-Fulton '99] for the cohomological quiver polynomials

    Phonon Density of States of LaFeAsO1-xFx

    We have studied the phonon density of states (PDOS) in LaFeAsO1-xFx with inelastic neutron scattering methods. The PDOS of the parent compound(x=0) is very similar to the PDOS of samples optimally doped with fluorine to achieve the maximum Tc (x~0.1). Good agreement is found between the experimental PDOS and first-principle calculations with the exception of a small difference in Fe mode frequencies. The PDOS reported here is not consistent with conventional electron-phonon mediated superconductivity

    Effects of vacancies on phonon entropy of B2 FeAl

    The phonon density of states (DOS) and phonon entropy of B2 FeAl were determined as functions of the Fe site vacancy concentration using several scattering techniques and were computed from first principles. Measurements at elevated temperature and pressure were performed to explore volume effects, test the usefulness of the quasiharmonic (QH) approximation, and provide comparison for the first-principles calculations. The average temperature and pressure dependencies of phonons were consistent with the QH model. The decrease in specific volume associated with the introduction of vacancies causes a stiffening of the DOS that was captured well with the experimentally determined Grüneisen parameter. Features associated with vacancies in the DOS are not well explained by this model, however, especially in the gap between the acoustic and optic branches. First-principles calculations indicated that these modes are primarily associated with vibrations of Al atoms in the first-nearest-neighbor shell of the vacancy, with some vibration amplitude also involving the second-nearest-neighbor Fe atoms. At the vacancy concentrations of study, the phonon entropy of vacancy formation was found to be approximately −1.7k_B/atom, about half as large and of opposite sign as the configurational entropy of vacancy formation

    Clinical biological and genetic heterogeneity of the inborn errors of pulmonary surfactant metabolism

    Pulmonary surfactant is a multimolecular complex located at the air-water interface within the alveolus to which a range of physical (surface-active properties) and immune functions has been assigned. This complex consists of a surface-active lipid layer (consisting mainly of phospholipids), and of an aqueous subphase. From discrete surfactant sub-fractions one can isolate strongly hydrophobic surf acta nt proteins B (SP-B) and C (SP-C) as well as collectins SP-A and SP-D, which were shown to have specific structural, metabolic, or immune properties. Inborn or acquired abnormalities of the surfactant, qualitative or quantitative in nature, account for a number of human diseases. Beside hyaline membrane disease of the preterm neonate, a cluster of hereditary or acquired lung diseases has been characterized by periodic acid-Schiff-positive material filling the alveoli. From this heterogeneous nosologic group, at least two discrete entities presently emerge. The first is the SP-B deficiency, in which an essentially proteinaceous material is stored within the alveoli, and which represents an autosomal recessive Mendelian entity linked to the SFTPB gene (MIM 1786640). The disease usually generally entails neonatal respiratory distress with rapid fatal outcome, although partial or transient deficiencies have also been observed. The second is alveolar proteinosis, characterized by the storage of a mixed protein and lipid material, which constitutes a relatively heterogeneous clinical and biological syndrome, especially with regard to age at onset (from the neonate through to adulthood) as well as the severity of associated signs. Murine models, with a targeted mutation of the gene encoding granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) (Csfgm) or the beta subunit of its receptor (II3rb1) support the hypothesis of an abnormality of surfactant turnover in which the alveolar macrophage is a key player. Apart from SP-B deficiency, in which a near-consensus diagnostic chart can be designed, the ascertainment of other abnormalities of surfactant metabolism is not straightforward. The disentanglement of this disease cluster is however essential to propose specific therapeutic procedures: repeated broncho-alveolar ravages, GM-CSF replacement, bone marrow grafting or lung transplantation
