Gamma-ray emission from star-forming complexes observed by MAGIC: The cases of W51 and HESS J1857+026
Massive star-forming regions assemble a large number of young stars with remnants of stellar evolution and a very dense environment. Therefore, particles accelerated in supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae encounter optimal conditions for interacting with target material and photon fields, and thus produce gamma-ray emission. However, observations are challenging because multiple phenomena may appear entangled within the resolution of current gamma-ray telescopes. We report on MAGIC observations aimed to understand the nature of the emission from the star-forming region W51 and the unidentified source HESSâJ1857+026. While gamma-ray emission from W51 is dominated by the interaction of the supernova remnant W51C with dense molecular clouds, HESSâJ1857+026 is associated to the pulsar wind nebula from PSRâJ1856+0245. However, an additional source is resolved north of HESSJ1857+026, with sufficient separation to determine that it cannot be powered by the same pulsar. The Conditional Correlation Attack: A Practical Attack on Bluetooth Encryption
Abstract. Motivated by the security of the nonlinear filter generator, the concept of correlation was previously extended to the conditional correlation, that studied the linear correlation of the inputs conditioned on a given (short) output pattern of some specific nonlinear function. Based on the conditional correlations, conditional correlation attacks were shown to be successful and efficient against the nonlinear filter generator. In this paper, we further generalize the concept of conditional correlations by assigning it with a different meaning, i.e. the correlation of the output of an arbitrary function conditioned on the unknown (partial) input which is uniformly distributed. Based on this generalized conditional correlation, a general statistical model is studied for dedicated key-recovery distinguishers. It is shown that the generalized conditional correlation is no smaller than the unconditional correlation. Consequently, our distinguisher improves on the traditional one (in the worst case it degrades into the traditional one). In particular, the distinguisher may be successful even if no ordinary correlation exists. As an application, a conditional correlation attack is developed and optimized against Bluetooth two-level E0. The attack is based on a recently detected flaw in the resynchronization of E0, as well as the investigation of conditional correlations in the Finite State Machine (FSM) governing the keystream output of E0. Our best attack finds the original encryption key for two-level E0 using the first 24 bits of 2 23.8 frames and with 2 38 computations. This is clearly the fastest and only practical known-plaintext attack on Bluetooth encryption compared with all existing attacks. Current experiments confirm our analysis
Effects of Health Insurance Interruption on Loss of Hypertension Control in Women with and Women Without HIV
Background: Among low-income women with and without HIV, it is a priority to reduce age-related comorbidities, including hypertension and its sequelae. Because consistent health insurance access has been identified as an important factor in controlling many chronic diseases, we estimated the effects of coverage interruption on loss of hypertension control in a cohort of women in the United States. Methods: We analyzed prospective, longitudinal data from the Women's Interagency HIV Study. HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women were included between 2005 and 2014 when they reported health insurance at consecutive biannual visits and had controlled hypertension, and were followed for any insurance break and loss of hypertension control. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) by Cox proportional hazards regression with inverse-probability-of-treatment-and censoring weights (marginal structural models), and plotted the cumulative incidence of hypertension control loss. Results: Among 890 HIV-infected women, the weighted HR for hypertension control loss comparing health insurance interruption to uninterrupted coverage was 1.37 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.99-1.91). Inclusion of AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) participation with health insurance modestly increased the HR (1.47; 95% CI, 1.04-2.07). Analysis of 272 HIV-uninfected women yielded a similar HR (1.39; 95% CI, 0.88-2.21). Additionally, there were indications of uninterrupted coverage having a protective effect on hypertension when compared with the natural course in HIV-infected (HR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.61-1.11) and HIV-uninfected (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.52-1.19) women. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that health insurance continuity promotes hypertension control in key populations. Interventions that ensure coverage stability and ADAP access should be a policy priority

or allow others to do so, for United States Government purposes.We present the first Hubble diagram of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) out to a redshift of two, together with constraints
on the matter density, M, and the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, w(âĄp/Ï). We build a sample of 20 cosmologically
useful SLSNe I based on light curve and spectroscopy quality cuts. We confirm the robustness of the peakâdecline SLSN I
standardization relation with a larger data set and improved fitting techniques than previous works. We then solve the SLSN
model based on the above standardization via minimization of the Ï2 computed from a covariance matrix that includes statistical
and systematic uncertainties. For a spatially flat cold dark matter ( CDM) cosmological model, we find M = 0.38+0.24
â0.19,
with an rms of 0.27 mag for the residuals of the distance moduli. For a w0waCDM cosmological model, the addition of SLSNe I
to a âbaselineâ measurement consisting of Planck temperature together with Type Ia supernovae, results in a small improvement
in the constraints of w0 and wa of 4 per cent.We present simulations of future surveys with 868 and 492 SLSNe I (depending on
the configuration used) and show that such a sample can deliver cosmological constraints in a flat CDM model with the same
precision (considering only statistical uncertainties) as current surveys that use Type Ia supernovae, while providing a factor of
2â3 improvement in the precision of the constraints on the time variation of dark energy, w0 and wa. This paper represents the
proof of concept for superluminous supernova cosmology, and demonstrates they can provide an independent test of cosmology

First cosmology results using SNe Ia from the dark energy survey: analysis, systematic uncertainties, and validation

First cosmology results using type Ia supernovae from the Dark Energy Survey: constraints on cosmological parameters
We present the first cosmological parameter constraints using measurements of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN). The analysis uses a subsample of 207 spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia from the first three years of DES-SN, combined with a low-redshift sample of 122 SNe from the literature. Our "DES-SN3YR" result from these 329 SNe Ia is based on a series of companion analyses and improvements covering SN Ia discovery, spectroscopic selection, photometry, calibration, distance bias corrections, and evaluation of systematic uncertainties. For a flat LCDM model we find a matter density Omega_m = 0.331 +_ 0.038. For a flat wCDM model, and combining our SN Ia constraints with those from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), we find a dark energy equation of state w = -0.978 +_ 0.059, and Omega_m = 0.321 +_ 0.018. For a flat w0waCDM model, and combining probes from SN Ia, CMB and baryon acoustic oscillations, we find w0 = -0.885 +_ 0.114 and wa = -0.387 +_ 0.430. These results are in agreement with a cosmological constant and with previous constraints using SNe Ia (Pantheon, JLA)
Rare coding variants in genes encoding GABA(A) receptors in genetic generalised epilepsies : an exome-based case-control study
Background Genetic generalised epilepsy is the most common type of inherited epilepsy. Despite a high concordance rate of 80% in monozygotic twins, the genetic background is still poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the burden of rare genetic variants in genetic generalised epilepsy. Methods For this exome-based case-control study, we used three different genetic generalised epilepsy case cohorts and three independent control cohorts, all of European descent. Cases included in the study were clinically evaluated for genetic generalised epilepsy. Whole-exome sequencing was done for the discovery case cohort, a validation case cohort, and two independent control cohorts. The replication case cohort underwent targeted next-generation sequencing of the 19 known genes encoding subunits of GABA(A) receptors and was compared to the respective GABA(A) receptor variants of a third independent control cohort. Functional investigations were done with automated two-microelectrode voltage clamping in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Findings Statistical comparison of 152 familial index cases with genetic generalised epilepsy in the discovery cohort to 549 ethnically matched controls suggested an enrichment of rare missense (Nonsyn) variants in the ensemble of 19 genes encoding GABA(A) receptors in cases (odds ratio [OR] 2.40 [95% CI 1.41-4.10]; p(Nonsyn)=0.0014, adjusted p(Nonsyn)=0.019). Enrichment for these genes was validated in a whole-exome sequencing cohort of 357 sporadic and familial genetic generalised epilepsy cases and 1485 independent controls (OR 1.46 [95% CI 1.05-2.03]; p(Nonsyn)=0.0081, adjusted p(Nonsyn)=0.016). Comparison of genes encoding GABA(A) receptors in the independent replication cohort of 583 familial and sporadic genetic generalised epilepsy index cases, based on candidate-gene panel sequencing, with a third independent control cohort of 635 controls confirmed the overall enrichment of rare missense variants for 15 GABA(A) receptor genes in cases compared with controls (OR 1.46 [95% CI 1.02-2.08]; p(Nonsyn)=0.013, adjusted p(Nonsyn)=0.027). Functional studies for two selected genes (GABRB2 and GABRA5) showed significant loss-of-function effects with reduced current amplitudes in four of seven tested variants compared with wild-type receptors. Interpretation Functionally relevant variants in genes encoding GABA(A) receptor subunits constitute a significant risk factor for genetic generalised epilepsy. Examination of the role of specific gene groups and pathways can disentangle the complex genetic architecture of genetic generalised epilepsy. Copyright (C) 2018 The Author(s). DES Y3 + KiDS-1000: Consistent cosmology combining cosmic shear surveys
We present a joint cosmic shear analysis of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3)
and the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) in a collaborative effort between the
two survey teams. We find consistent cosmological parameter constraints between
DES Y3 and KiDS-1000 which, when combined in a joint-survey analysis, constrain
the parameter with a mean value of
. The mean marginal is lower than the maximum a
posteriori estimate, , owing to skewness in the marginal
distribution and projection effects in the multi-dimensional parameter space.
Our results are consistent with constraints from observations of the
cosmic microwave background by Planck, with agreement at the level.
We use a Hybrid analysis pipeline, defined from a mock survey study quantifying
the impact of the different analysis choices originally adopted by each survey
team. We review intrinsic alignment models, baryon feedback mitigation
strategies, priors, samplers and models of the non-linear matter power

Prospects for e+e- physics at Frascati between the phi and the psi
We present a detailed study, done in the framework of the INFN 2006 Roadmap,
of the prospects for e+e- physics at the Frascati National Laboratories. The
physics case for an e+e- collider running at high luminosity at the phi
resonance energy and also reaching a maximum center of mass energy of 2.5 GeV
is discussed, together with the specific aspects of a very high luminosity
tau-charm factory. Subjects connected to Kaon decay physics are not discussed
here, being part of another INFN Roadmap working group. The significance of the

Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DANE
Investigation at a --factory can shed light on several debated issues
in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and
experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in
the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum
Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for
improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of
kaons and eta/eta mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the
nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow
di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter
sector. We also report on the physics in the continuum with the
measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma
