Hall viscosity from gauge/gravity duality
In (2+1)-dimensional systems with broken parity, there exists yet another
transport coefficient, appearing at the same order as the shear viscosity in
the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. In condensed matter physics, it is
referred to as "Hall viscosity". We consider a simple holographic realization
of a (2+1)-dimensional isotropic fluid with broken spatial parity. Using
techniques of fluid/gravity correspondence, we uncover that the holographic
fluid possesses a nonzero Hall viscosity, whose value only depends on the
near-horizon region of the background. We also write down a Kubo's formula for
the Hall viscosity. We confirm our results by directly computing the Hall
viscosity using the formula.Comment: 12 page
Schr\"odinger Deformations of AdS_3 x S^3
We study Schr\"odinger invariant deformations of the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 (or
K3) solution of IIB supergravity and find a large class of solutions with
integer and half-integer dynamical exponents. We analyze the supersymmetries
preserved by our solutions and find an infinite number of solutions with four
supersymmetries. We study the solutions holographically and find that the dual
D1-D5 (or F1-NS5) CFT is deformed by irrelevant operators of spin one and two.Comment: 23 page
A boundary stress tensor for higher-derivative gravity in AdS and Lifshitz backgrounds
We investigate the Brown-York stress tensor for curvature-squared theories.
This requires a generalized Gibbons-Hawking term in order to establish a
well-posed variational principle, which is achieved in a universal way by
reducing the number of derivatives through the introduction of an auxiliary
tensor field. We examine the boundary stress tensor thus defined for the
special case of `massive gravity' in three dimensions, which augments the
Einstein-Hilbert term by a particular curvature-squared term. It is shown that
one obtains finite results for physical parameters on AdS upon adding a
`boundary cosmological constant' as a counterterm, which vanishes at the
so-called chiral point. We derive known and new results, like the value of the
central charges or the mass of black hole solutions, thereby confirming our
prescription for the computation of the stress tensor. Finally, we inspect
recently constructed Lifshitz vacua and a new black hole solution that is
asymptotically Lifshitz, and we propose a novel and covariant counterterm for
this case.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure; v2: minor corrections, references added, to

Charged Magnetic Brane Solutions in AdS_5 and the fate of the third law of thermodynamics
We construct asymptotically AdS_5 solutions to 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell
theory with Chern-Simons term which are dual to 4-dimensional gauge theories,
including N=4 SYM theory, in the presence of a constant background magnetic
field B and a uniform electric charge density \rho. For the solutions
corresponding to supersymmetric gauge theories, we find numerically that a
small magnetic field causes a drastic decrease in the entropy at low
temperatures. The near-horizon AdS_2 \times R^3 geometry of the purely
electrically charged brane thus appears to be unstable under the addition of a
small magnetic field. Based on this observation, we propose a formulation of
the third law of thermodynamics (or Nernst theorem) that can be applied to
black holes in the AdS/CFT context.
We also find interesting behavior for smaller, non-supersymmetric, values of
the Chern-Simons coupling k. For k=1 we exhibit exact solutions corresponding
to warped AdS_3 black holes, and show that these can be connected to
asymptotically AdS_5 spacetime. For k\leq 1 the entropy appears to go to a
finite value at extremality, but the solutions still exhibit a mild singularity
at strictly zero temperature. In addition to our numerics, we carry out a
complete perturbative analysis valid to order B^2, and find that this
corroborates our numerical results insofar as they overlap.Comment: 45 pages v2: added note about subsequent results found in

Anomaly/Transport in an Ideal Weyl gas
We study some of the transport processes which are specific to an ideal gas
of relativistic Weyl fermions and relate the corresponding transport
coefficients to various anomaly coefficients of the system. We propose that
these transport processes can be thought of as arising from the continuous
injection of chiral states and their subsequent adiabatic flow driven by
vorticity. This in turn leads to an elegant expression relating the anomaly
induced transport coefficients to the anomaly polynomial of the Ideal Weyl gas.Comment: 35 pages, JHEP forma
Gauge gravity duality for d-wave superconductors: prospects and challenges
We write down an action for a charged, massive spin two field in a fixed
Einstein background. Despite some technical problems, we argue that in an
effective field theory framework and in the context of the AdS/CFT
correspondence, this action can be used to study the properties of a superfluid
phase transition with a d-wave order parameter in a dual strongly interacting
field theory. We investigate the phase diagram and the charge conductivity of
the superfluid phase. We also explain how possible couplings between the spin
two field and bulk fermions affect the fermion spectral function.Comment: 42 pages, 6 figure
Universality and exactness of Schrodinger geometries in string and M-theory
We propose an organizing principle for classifying and constructing
Schrodinger-invariant solutions within string theory and M-theory, based on the
idea that such solutions represent nonlinear completions of linearized vector
and graviton Kaluza-Klein excitations of AdS compactifications. A crucial
simplification, derived from the symmetry of AdS, is that the nonlinearities
appear only quadratically. Accordingly, every AdS vacuum admits infinite
families of Schrodinger deformations parameterized by the dynamical exponent z.
We exhibit the ease of finding these solutions by presenting three new
constructions: two from M5 branes, both wrapped and extended, and one from the
D1-D5 (and S-dual F1-NS5) system. From the boundary perspective, perturbing a
CFT by a null vector operator can lead to nonzero beta-functions for spin-2
operators; however, symmetry restricts them to be at most quadratic in
couplings. This point of view also allows us to easily prove nonrenormalization
theorems: for any Sch(z) solution of two-derivative supergravity constructed in
the above manner, z is uncorrected to all orders in higher derivative
corrections if the deforming KK mode lies in a short multiplet of an AdS
supergroup. Furthermore, we find infinite classes of 1/4 BPS solutions with
4-,5- and 7-dimensional Schrodinger symmetry that are exact.Comment: 31 pages, plus appendices; v2, minor corrections, added refs, slight

Schr\"odinger Holography with and without Hyperscaling Violation
We study the properties of the Schr\"odinger-type non-relativistic holography
for general dynamical exponent z with and without hyperscaling violation
exponent \theta. The scalar correlation function has a more general form due to
general z as well as the presence of \theta, whose effects also modify the
scaling dimension of the scalar operator. We propose a prescription for minimal
surfaces of this "codimension 2 holography," and demonstrate the (d-1)
dimensional area law for the entanglement entropy from (d+3) dimensional
Schr\"odinger backgrounds. Surprisingly, the area law is violated for d+1 < z <
d+2, even without hyperscaling violation, which interpolates between the
logarithmic violation and extensive volume dependence of entanglement entropy.
Similar violations are also found in the presence of the hyperscaling
violation. Their dual field theories are expected to have novel phases for the
parameter range, including Fermi surface. We also analyze string theory
embeddings using non-relativistic branes.Comment: 62 pages and 6 figures, v2: several typos in section 5 corrected,

Critical solutions in topologically gauged N=8 CFTs in three dimensions
In this paper we discuss some special (critical) background solutions that
arise in topological gauged three-dimensional CFTs with SO(N)
gauge group. These solutions solve the TMG equations (containing the parameters
and ) for a certain set of values of obtained by varying the
number of scalar fields with a VEV. Apart from Minkowski, chiral round
and null-warped (or Schr\"odinger(z=2)) we identify also a more exotic
solution recently found in by Ertl, Grumiller and Johansson. We also
discuss the spectrum, symmetry breaking pattern and the supermultiplet
structure in the various backgrounds and argue that some properties are due to
their common origin in a conformal phase. Some of the scalar fields, including
all higgsed ones, turn out to satisfy three-dimensional singleton field
equations. Finally, we note that topologically gauged ABJ(M)
theories have a similar, but more restricted, set of background solutions.Comment: 34 pages, v2: minor corrections, note about a new solution added in

Generating Temperature Flow for eta/s with Higher Derivatives: From Lifshitz to AdS
We consider charged dilatonic black branes in AdS_5 and examine the effects
of perturbative higher derivative corrections on the ratio of shear viscosity
to entropy density eta/s of the dual plasma. The structure of eta/s is
controlled by the relative hierarchy between the two scales in the plasma, the
temperature and the chemical potential. In this model the background
near-horizon geometry interpolates between a Lifshitz-like brane at low
temperature, and an AdS brane at high temperatures -- with AdS asymptotics in
both cases. As a result, in this construction the viscosity to entropy ratio
flows as a function of temperature, from a value in the IR which is sensitive
to the dynamical exponent z, to the simple result expected for an AdS brane in
the UV. Coupling the scalar directly to the higher derivative terms generates
additional temperature dependence, and leads to a particularly interesting
structure for eta/s in the IR.Comment: Plots and references added. Journal version of the pape
