A Paradigm Shift: Blended Learning Integration in Russian Higher Education

The main objective of the article is to contribute to an understanding of the value of blended learning within the scope of new paradigm in Russian higher education. We consider blended learning as a unique approach that aims to solve a series of tasks connected with the necessity of raising education quality. Such competences as self-organization, knowledge management, the ways of getting and processing it are brought to the forefront. The article analyzes the didactic capacity of blended learning as the means to implement the effective transition from a traditional learning model to an integrated one where electronic environments and resources are widely used. The existing blended learning models are considered and the ways of their adaptation towards the requirements of the Russian higher education system are discussed with the focus on the course “foreign language”

Tutor-mediated Support in Blended Learnin

Higher education in Russia is actively encouraged to use blended learning as a response to main trends of modern education oriented to a competency-based approach, paradigm shift to students’ self-study training, transfer from the principle of “one education for a lifetime” to “lifelong learning throughout a lifetime”, freedom of university choice, academic mobility, education computerization and usage of new information. The efficacy of blended learning however doesn’t consist in simple integration of online component with traditional face-to-face classes. Tutor-mediated support is a key element of any blended course and it is able to provide the more effective use of technology. The article presents the idea of online tutoring that supports and enhances blended learning. We focus mainly on stresses and special duties placed on the tutor to cater effectively for all the needs of course participants

Students' perception of online courses

Technology is constantly evolving in more sophisticated forms giving new opportunities for educators to transfer learning into virtual space. New educational technology trends are associated today with blended learning where traditional methods of teaching merge with online sessions. Blended learning with its learner-centered approach has a potential to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Russian higher institutions embrace this technology as a strategy to engage and motivate students and thereby augment the learning process. The paper studies students' engagement and satisfaction with the online courses and their overall perception from learners' perspective. The findings could serve as a reference point to promote online courses and to achieve considerable educational benefits. Технологии постоянно эволюционируют в более совершенные формы, предоставляя преподавателям новые возможности по переносу обучения в виртуальное пространство. Новые образовательные тенденции, основанные на применении современных технологий, ассоциируются сегодня в первую очередь со смешанным обучением, когда традиционные формы обучения сочетаются с работой онлайн. Смешанное обучение, имеющее в основе личностный подход в обучении, обладает большим потенциалом для повышения качества преподавания и обучения. Высшие учебные заведения России выбирают данную технологию в качестве стратегии для привлечения интереса и повышения мотивации студентов, тем самым интенсифицируя образовательный процесс. Данная работа изучает вовлеченность и удовлетворенность студентов онлайн курсами, а также восприятие данных курсов в целом с точки зрения обучаемых. Данные исследования могут служить в качестве рекомендаций по продвижению онлайн курсов и достижению значительных образовательных результатов

Using wikis for enhancing students' online collaboration

Web 2.0 technologies offer new opportunities for their integration into the instructional settings. Such element of Web 2.0 as a wikiis seen as communication and collaboration tool that is often used in online courses to engage students in learning foreign languages. The paper suggests strategies for implementing wikis in order to enhance students' collaboration in online courses. The analyzed wiki activities show that the participants of the online course are ready for effective online collaboration and quite aware of their roles. Технологии Веб 2.0 открывают новые возможности для их интеграции в сфере образования. Такой элемент Веб 2.0, как вики, считается инструментом сотрудничества и коммуникации и часто используется в онлайн курсах для того, чтобы увлечь студентов изучением иностранных языков. Данная работа предлагает стратегии применения вики с целью улучшения совместной работы студентов в рамках онлайн курсов. Проанализированные задания вики показывают, что участники онлайн курса готовы к эффективному сотрудничеству в сети и четко осознают свои роли

Students' attitudes and expectations in asynchronous online discussions

In attempt to move to leading positions in the word university ranking National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) implemented online courses as part of academic curriculum. Foreign language courses are accompanied now by the online component on Moodle, which has become an official Learning Management System (LMS) of TPU. This paper reports about the investigation of asynchronous online discussion efficacy in the learning process. Students' attitudes and expectations in such type of discussion were analyzed in order to present student's perception of learning in the discussion environment. The findings of this study indicate certain benefits and positive overall perception though some problems were identified and corresponding measures were suggested. Национальный исследовательский Томский политехнический университет (ТПУ) пытается занять лидирующую позицию в мировом рейтинге лучших университетов, в связи с чем было инициировано введение онлайн курсов в программу университета. Языковые курсы теперь имеют онлайн компонент, размещенный на платформе Moodle, которая является официальной системой управления обучением в ТПУ. Данная работа рассматривает эффективность асинхронной онлайн дискуссии в образовательном процессе. Были проанализированы ожидания студентов от онлайн дискуссии и их отношение к данному виду работы. Результаты исследования указывают, что существуют определенные преимущества, и говорят об общем позитивном восприятии онлайн дискуссий студентами. Но в то же время были обнаружены определенные проблемы и предложены способы их решения

Tutor's role in online courses

The increased use of information and communication technologies in education demands a critical review of the approaches used for supporting teaching and learning activities in online environment. The paper discusses the special role of the tutor who guides and supports the learning process in the online course supplementing traditional face-to-face activities in the blended learning model. Students' evaluations of tutor's role were analyzed and underlay this study. The findings show that professional and successful tutoring helps students in improving their learning efficacy and having greater personal responsibility for their outcomes. Рост использования информационно-коммуникационных технологий в образовании требует критического анализа и пересмотра подходов, используемых для поддержки образовательной деятельности в онлайн среде. Данная работа рассматривает особую роль тьютора, который поддерживает и сопровождает учебный процесс в онлайн курсе, дополняющем традиционное контактное обучение в смешанной модели обучения. В основе данного исследования лежит анализ студенческого восприятия роли тьютора. Результаты исследования показывают, что профессиональная и успешная деятельность тьютора помогает повысить эффективность обучения и способствует пониманию личной ответственности студентов за результаты обучения

Wiki-based Collaborative Learning Experience in a Foreign Language Blended Course

The article emphasizes the educational potential of wikis for learning foreign languages. It focuses on students’ collaboration based on integration of different types of activities within a highly motivating blended learning environment where learners can interact and share their ideas. The study aims to understand if wikis could enhance online collaboration and positively affect students’ attitudes to group work. It tries to explore the level of participation and contribution of students in wiki-based activities, as well as their attitude to this type of online collaboration
