    Computational studies of history-dependence in nematic liquid crystals in random environments

    Glassy liquid crystalline systems are expected to show significant history-dependent effects. Two model glassy systems are the RAN and SSS (sprinkled silica spin) lattice models. The RAN model is a Lebwohl-Lasher lattice model with locally coupled nematic spins, together with uncorrelated random anisotropy fields at each site, while the SSS model has a finite concentration of impurity spins frozen in random directions. Here Brownian simulation is used to study the effect of different sample histories in the low temperature regime in a three-dimensional (d=3) model intermediate between SSS and RAN, in which a finite concentration p<pc (pc the percolation threshold) of frozen spins interacts with neighboring nematic spins with coupling W. Simulations were performed at temperature T?TNI/2 (TNI the bulk nematic-isotropic transition temperature) for temperature-quenched and field-quenched histories (TQH and FQH, respectively), as well as for temperature-annealed histories (AH). The first two of these limits represent extreme histories encountered in typical experimental studies. Using long-time averages for equilibrated systems, we calculate orientational order parameters and two-point correlation functions. Finite-size scaling was used to determine the range of the orientational ordering, as a function of coupling strength W,p and sample history. Sample history plays a significant role; for given concentration p, as disorder strength W is increased, TQH systems sustain quasi-long-range order (QLRO) and short-range order (SRO). The data are also consistent with a long-range order (LRO) phase at very low disorder strength. By contrast, for FQH and p?0.1, only LRO and QLRO occur within the range of parameters investigated. The crossover between regimes depends on history, but in general, the FQH phase is more ordered than the AH phase, which is more ordered than the TQH phase. However, at temperatures close to the isotropic-nematic phase transition of pure samples we observe SRO for p=0.1 even for FQH. We detect also in the QLRO phase a domain-type structural pattern, consistent with ideas introduced by Giamarchi and Doussal [Phys. Rev. B 52, 1242 (1995)] on superconducting flux lattices. In the weak-disorder limit the orientational correlation length obeys the Larkin-Imry-Ma scaling ??D?2/(4?d)

    History-Dependent Patterns in Randomly Perturbed Nematic Liquid Crystals

    We study the characteristics of nematic structures in a randomly perturbed nematic liquid crystal (LC) phase. We focus on the impact of the samples history on the universal behavior. The obtained results are of interest for every randomly perturbed system exhibiting a continuous symmetry-breaking phase transition. A semimicroscopic lattice simulation is used where the LC molecules are treated as cylindrically symmetric, rod-like objects interacting via a Lebwohl-Lasher (LL) interaction. Pure LC systems exhibit a first order phase transition into the orientationally ordered nematic phase at T=Tc on lowering the temperature T. The orientational ordering of LC molecules is perturbed by the quenched, randomly distributed rod-like impurities of concentration p. Their orientation is randomly distributed, and they are coupled with the LC molecules via an LL-type interaction. Only concentrations below the percolation threshold are considered. The key macroscopic characteristics of perturbed LC structures in the symmetry-broken nematic phase are analyzed for two qualitatively different histories at T≪Tc. We demonstrate that, for a weak enough interaction among the LC molecules and impurities, qualitatively different history-dependent states could be obtained. These states could exhibit either short-range, quasi-long-range, or even long-range order

    Highly hydrolytic reuteransucrase from probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri strain ATCC 55730

    Lactobacillus reuteri strain ATCC 55730 (LB BIO) was isolated as a pure culture from a Reuteri tablet purchased from the BioGaia company. This probiotic strain produces a soluble glucan (reuteran), in which the majority of the linkages are of the α-(1→4) glucosidic type (∼70%). This reuteran also contains α-(1→6)- linked glucosyl units and 4,6-disubstituted α-glucosyl units at the branching points. The LB BIO glucansucrase gene (gtfO) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, and the GTFO enzyme was purified. The recombinant GTFO enzyme and the LB BIO culture supernatants synthesized identical glucan polymers with respect to linkage type and size distribution. GTFO thus is a reuteransucrase, responsible for synthesis of this reuteran polymer in LB BIO. The preference of GTFO for synthesizing α-(1→4) linkages is also evident from the oligosaccharides produced from sucrose with different acceptor substrates, e.g., isopanose from isomaltose. GTFO has a relatively high hydrolysis/transferase activity ratio. Complete conversion of 100 mM sucrose by GTFO nevertheless yielded large amounts of reuteran, although more than 50% of sucrose was converted into glucose. This is only the second example of the isolation and characterization of a reuteransucrase and its reuteran product, both found in different L. reuteri strains.     Efficient screening methods for glucosyltransferase genes in Lactobacillus strains

    Limited information is available about homopolysaccharide synthesis in the genus Lactobacillus. Using efficient screening techniques, extracellular glucosyltransferase (GTF) enzyme activity, resulting in α-glucan synthesis from sucrose, was detected in various lactobacilli. PCR with degenerate primers based on homologous boxes of known glucosyltransferase (gtf) genes of lactic acid bacteria strains allowed cloning of fragments of 10 putative gtf genes from eight different glucan producing Lactobacillus strains (five Lactobacillus reuteri strains, one Lactobacillus fermentum strain, one Lactobacillus sake strain and one Lactobacillus parabuchneri strain). Sequence analysis revealed that these lactobacilli possess a large variation of (putative) gtf genes, similar to what has been observed for Leuconostoc and Streptococcus strains. Homologs of GTFA of Lb. reuteri 121 (synthesizing reuteran, a unique glucan with α-(1→4) and α-(1→6) glycosidic bonds) were found in three of the four other Lb. reuteri strains tested. The other Lactobacillus GTF fragments showed the highest similarity with GTF enzymes of Leuconostoc spp.

    Discrete solvent effects on the effective interaction between charged colloids

    Using computer simulations of two charged colloidal spheres with their counterions in a hard sphere solvent, we show that the granular nature of the solvent significantly influences the effective colloidal interaction. For divalent counterions, the total effective force can become attractive generated by counterion hydration, while for monovalent counterions the forces are repulsive and well-described by a solvent-induced colloidal charge renormalization. Both effects are not contained in the traditional "primitive" approaches but can be accounted for in a solvent-averaged primitive model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Gases and seabed fluid fluxes at the Panarea shallow hydrothermal vents (Aeolian Islands)

    CO2 leaking into the shallow sediments and overlying seawater is partitioned in different forms, each migrating at its own rate and having potentially different impacts. To begin with the CO2 gas will migrate through the shallow subsurface either alone as a free gas or together with associated deep fluids (e.g. brines), with the free-phase CO2 equilibrating with the surrounding pore waters/associated brines. Migrating upward these fluids will enter the base of the water column, with the release of gas bubbles (and possibly associated waters) from the sediments into the overlying seawater. The bubbles will rise in the water column creating what is known as a bubble “flare” with the CO2 in the bubbles dissolving in the surrounding surface water as they rise. Depending on the depth and the chemical/physical characteristics of the water column, these bubbles may or may not reach the water surface. Any co-migrating water/brine will also be released into the water column, creating a plume having a chemical composition that is distinct from the surrounding seawater, consisting of dissolved gases (mainly CO2), elements in the original brine, and elements liberated via CO2-induced water-rock interaction. The height that this dissolved plume will reach in the water column will depend on the original flow rate across the sediment-water interface and the density contrast between the plume and surrounding seawater. Both the gas-induced and water plumes will then migrate laterally and vertically as a result of the local currents, water column stratification, and density effects, meaning that there is the potential for impact both in the near and far field for pelagic organisms, both in terms of a lower pH and the possibility of elevated concentrations of toxic elements. This study was carried out in the framework of two EC funded projects, RISCS and ECO2 related to research on sub-seabed CO2 storage as climate change mitigation strategy, and potential impact on marine ecosystems. Here, we investigated how CO2-leakage, a risk associated with subseafloor CO2-storage, can affect physical and chemical characteristics of the surrounding ecosystem. We studied the Panarea natural laboratory site (Aeolian Islands), where natural CO2 is leaking from the seafloor into the overlying water column, as an analogue for a leakage scenario

    U sklopu sistematskog pregleda radnika u jednoj građevinskoj radnoj organizaciji izvršili smo audiometrijska mjerenja u radnika izvrgnutih buci. Analizirali smo i intenzitet sveukupne buke na radnim mjestima i obavili spektralnu analizu buke. Nalaz audiograma bio je uredan u otprilike polovice svih radnika. S obzirom na to da nismo imali kontrolnih audiograma prije stupanja na rad u ovu industriju, ne možemo ustvrditi da su nađena oštećenja uzrokovana isključivo bukom na tim radnim mjestima. Ovi nalazi, međutim, upućuju na nužnost prethodnog audiometriranja svakog radnika prije njegova stupanja na posao gdje će biti izvrgnut buci.Within a periodical medical check-up of workers in a building enterprise we carried out an audiometric examination in the workers exposed to noise. We analyzed the total noise level at work places and carried out a spectral analysis of noise. The audiograms were normal in about one half of the workers. Since there were no control audiograms before the workers started to work in this industry, we cannot claim that the observed damages were due exclusively to noise. However, the results suggest a necessity of audiometric examinations of workers before they start work in exposure to noise
