    How Is Exposure to Tobacco Outlets Within Activity Spaces Associated With Daily Tobacco Use Among Youth? A Mediation Analysis

    INTRODUCTION: We investigated associations between exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces and daily tobacco use, and whether exposure to adults or peers using tobacco mediate these relationships. METHODS: We used Geographic Ecological Momentary Assessment data over 14 days from 85 youth aged 16-20 years in eight mid-sized California city areas. Tobacco outlet addresses and global positioning systems locations were geocoded and activity spaces were constructed by joining sequential points. We assessed daily number of tobacco outlets within 50 or 100 m of activity space polylines and number of minutes participants were within 50 or 100 m of tobacco outlets each day; daily use of tobacco; and whether participants saw (1) adults and (2) people their age (peers) using tobacco each day. RESULTS: Controlling for demographics, results of multilevel structural equation models showed no association between number of tobacco outlets within 50 m of polylines and tobacco use (probit regression coefficient: 0.01, p = .82). However, we found evidence of an indirect effect (p = .001) through daily exposure to peers using tobacco. Specifically, greater number of tobacco outlets within 50 m of polylines was positively associated with seeing peers use tobacco (probit regression coefficient: 0.10, p < .001). In turn, seeing peers use tobacco was positively associated with tobacco use on that day (probit regression coefficient: 2.23, p < .001). Similar results were found for number of tobacco outlets within 100 m of polylines. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces affects youth tobacco use through daily exposure to peers who use tobacco. IMPLICATIONS: Using real-time-ordered data, this article examines whether exposure to adults and peers using tobacco mediate associations between exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces and daily tobacco use among youth. Results suggest that exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces affects daily tobacco use through exposure to peers who use tobacco. These findings provide additional significant support for policy makers who are considering regulating the number and density of tobacco retailers and point to the importance of interventions focused on peer tobacco use and youths' daily environments to reduce tobacco use

    Mental Health in China: Stigma, Family Obligations, and the Potential of Peer Support

    Some people with mental illness in China do not receive treatment. We explored how stigma and familial obligation influenced accessibility of social support for patients with depression in China and the potential acceptability of peer support programs. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with five psychiatrists and 16 patients receiving care for depression from a large psychiatric hospital in Jining, Shandong Province of China. Patients with mental illness reported barriers that prevented them from (a) receiving treatment and (b) relying on informal social support from family members, including stigma, somatization, and community norms. Circumventing these barriers, peer support (i.e., support from others with depression) was viewed by patients as an acceptable means of exchanging information and relying on others for support. Formative research on peer support programs to examine programming and activities may help reduce the burden of unmet mental health care needs in China

    New CMB Power Spectrum Constraints from MSAMI

    We present new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy results from the combined analysis of the three flights of the first Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1). This balloon-borne bolometric instrument measured about 10 square degrees of sky at half-degree resolution in 4 frequency bands from 5.2 icm to 20 icm with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present an overview of our analysis methods, compare the results from the three flights, derive new constraints on the CMB power spectrum from the combined data and reduce the data to total-power Wiener-filtered maps of the CMB. A key feature of this new analysis is a determination of the amplitude of CMB fluctuations at ℓ∼400\ell \sim 400.     Social support needs among patients with advanced breast cancer: Sensitivity trumps substance

    Background The importance of social support for cancer patients has been established in previous studies. However, much of the existing research has identified associations between general measures of social support and various health indicators. Nevertheless, some research has begun to suggest the utility of more nuanced understandings of how patients receive and use social support. Objective To examine the roles of nondirective (ie, support that accepts recipients' feelings and is cooperative with their plans) and directive support (ie, support that prescribes "correct" choices and feelings) as well as social support needs and desires among patients with advanced breast cancer. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews (qualitative method) with 8 patients with stage IV breast cancer to collect qualitative information about the disease-related challenges they faced, the support they received from their families and medical teams, and the appropriateness of directive and nondirective support. In addition, we used the 14-item Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to assess clinically relevant cut-offs for anxiety and depression and the 16-item Social Support Inventory to assess the provision of nondirective and directive social support to the patients (quantitative method). Results Qualitative findings suggested that there was considerable variability among patients' reports of social support provided by family, friends, and the medical team. From the qualitative data, patients reported directive support as more useful in times of acute need and emphasized the importance of supportive systems rather than supportive persons in providing emotional support. From the quantitative data, patients reported nondirective support as more typical of support received from both family and medical teams than directive support. On the HADS, 1 patient had a score of 9 on the anxiety subscale, above the score of 7 that is for mild anxiety. No patients scored above the criterion for mild depression, also a score of 7. Limitations Very small sample limits the ability to generalize findings. Conclusions The right type of support for patients with advanced breast cancer is contingent on a range of variables, which suggests that the key characteristic of support may not be any particular feature, but the nuanced adjustment of its content and style of delivery to the patient's circumstances.     MSAM1-94: repeated measurement of medium-scale anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation

    The second flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1-94) observed the same field as the first flight (MSAM1-92) to confirm our earlier measurement of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) anisotropy. This instrument chops a 30\arcmin\ beam in a 3 position pattern with a throw of \pm40\arcmin, and simultaneously measures single and double differenced sky signals. We observe in four spectral channels centered at 5.6, 9.0, 16.5, and 22.5~\icm, providing sensitivity to the peak of the CMBR and to thermal emission from interstellar dust. The dust component correlates well with the \IRAS\ 100~\micron\ map. The CMBR observations in our double difference channel correlate well with the earlier observations, but the single difference channel shows some discrepancies. We obtain a detection of fluctuations in the MSAM1-94 dataset that match CMBR in our spectral bands of \Delta T/T = 1.9^{+1.3}_{-0.7}\times 10^{-5} (90\% confidence interval, including calibration uncertainty) for total rms Gaussian fluctuations with correlation angle 0\fdg3, using the double difference demodulation

    A Measurement of the Medium-Scale Anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

    Observations from the first flight of the Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM) are analyzed to place limits on Gaussian fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR). This instrument chops a 30\arcmin\ beam in a 3 position pattern with a throw of \pm40\arcmin; the resulting data is analyzed in statistically independent single and double difference datasets. We observe in four spectral channels at 5.6, 9.0, 16.5, and 22.5~\icm, allowing the separation of interstellar dust emission from CMBR fluctuations. The dust component is correlated with the \IRAS\ 100~\micron\ map. The CMBR component has two regions where the signature of an unresolved source is seen. Rejecting these two source regions, we obtain a detection of fluctuations which match CMBR in our spectral bands of 0.6×10−5<ΔT/T<2.2×10−50.6 \times 10^{-5} < \Delta T/T < 2.2 \times 10^{-5} (90\% CL interval) for total rms Gaussian fluctuations with correlation angle 0\fdg5, using the single difference demodulation. For the double difference demodulation, the result is 1.1×10−5<ΔT/T<3.1×10−51.1 \times 10^{-5} < \Delta T/T < 3.1 \times 10^{-5} (90\% CL interval) at a correlation angle of 0\fdg3.Comment: 13 pages + 3 figures (included), LaTeX + AASTeX v3.

    The paper contains a discussion of the properties of the gravito-magnetic interaction in non stationary conditions. A direct deduction of the equivalent of Faraday-Henry law is given. A comparison is made between the gravito-magnetic and the electro-magnetic induction, and it is shown that there is no Meissner-like effect for superfluids in the field of massive spinning bodies. The impossibility of stationary motions in directions not along the lines of the gravito-magnetic field is found.
