The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the labor market and given rise to the Great Resignation. Drawing on a mixed methods panel study of 199 precarious and gig-based workers, we analyze how a changing conception of free time during the Covid-19 pandemic led low-wage service workers to seek more fulfilling careers. Whereas most workers initially perceived free time in terms of opportunity costs, they later reconceived this time as enabling an investment in personal growth, moving from ?spending time? making money to ?investing time? in themselves. This shift in temporal experience is expressed through the adoption of a ?work passion? logic and ?pandemic epiphanies? that motivated respondents to seek self-affirming and potentially more lucrative work opportunities

WstępPrzedmiotem zainteresowania badaczy jest opracowanie systemu w postaci wkładki domacicznej zawierającej octan medroksyprogesteronu, którego czas uwalniania do środowiska jamy macicy wynosiłby 30 dni. Należy podkreślić, że w przypadku terapii miejscowej całomiesięczne obciążenie ustroju lekiem wynosi 2 g, a w przypadku terapii parenteralnej skojarzonej z enteralną wynosi 30 g, tj. 15-krotnie większe.

While social distancing measures are essential in limiting the impact of a pandemic, such measures are often less feasible for low-income groups such as precarious workers who continue to travel on public transit and are less able to practice social distancing measures. In this paper, based on in-depth remote interviews conducted from April 2020 through June 2020, with more than 130 gig and precarious workers in New York City, we find that precarious workers experience three main hurdles in regard to accessing unemployment assistance that can be broadly categorized as knowledge, sociological, and temporal/financial barriers. Drawing on worker interview responses, we have named these responses: (1) Didn’t Know, (2) Didn’t Want, and (3) Can’t Wait. These challenges have led workers to turn to gig and precarious work, further highlighting the inequities of the pandemic. As a result, for some workers, so-called “side hustles” have become their primary social safety net

“The Looming, Crazy Stalker Coronavirus”: Fear Mongering, Fake News, and the Diffusion of Distrust

The authors explore media distrust among a sample of precarious and gig workers interviewed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although these left-leaning respondents initially increased their media consumption at the outset of the pandemic, they soon complained of media sensationalism and repurposed a readily available cultural tool: claims of “fake news.” As a result, these unsettled times have resulted in a “diffusion of distrust,” in which an elite conservative discourse of skepticism toward the media has also become a popular form of compensatory control among self-identified liberals. Perceiving “fake news” and media sensationalism as “not good” for their mental health, respondents also reported experiencing media burnout and withdrawing from media consumption. As the pandemic passes its one-year anniversary, this research has implications for long-term media coverage on COVID-19 and ongoing media trust and consumption

Good jobs, scam jobs: Detecting, normalizing, and internalizing online job scams during the COVID-19 pandemic

Good jobs that allow remote work have enabled white-collar professionals to stay home during COVID-19, but for precarious workers, online advertisements for work-from-home employment are often scams. In this article, based on in-depth interviews conducted between April and July 2020 with nearly 200 precarious workers, we find that precarious workers regularly encountered fraudulent job advertisements via digital media. Drawing on Swidler's concepts of the cultural tool kit and cultural logic, we find that in this time of uncertainty, workers defaulted to the focus on personal responsibility that is inherent in insecurity culture. Following the cultural logic of personal responsibility, job seekers did not place blame on job search websites for allowing the scams to be posted, but normalized the situation, deploying a scam detection repertoire in response. In addition, the discovery that advertised "good jobs" are often scams affecting workers' desire to continue job hunting and perceptions of potential future success

D'atri spaces of type k and related classes of geometries concerning jacobi operators

In this article we continue the study of the geometry of kk-D'Atri spaces, % 1\leq k n1\leq n-1 (nn denotes the dimension of the manifold),, began by the second author. It is known that kk-D'Atri spaces, k1,k\geq 1, are related to properties of Jacobi operators RvR_{v} along geodesics, since she has shown that trRv{\operatorname{tr}}R_{v}, trRv2{\operatorname{tr}}R_{v}^{2} are invariant under the geodesic flow for any unit tangent vector vv. Here, assuming that the Riemannian manifold is a D'Atri space, we prove in our main result that trRv3{\operatorname{tr}}R_{v}^{3} is also invariant under the geodesic flow if k3 k\geq 3. In addition, other properties of Jacobi operators related to the Ledger conditions are obtained and they are used to give applications to Iwasawa type spaces. In the class of D'Atri spaces of Iwasawa type, we show two different characterizations of the symmetric spaces of noncompact type: they are exactly the C\frak{C}-spaces and on the other hand they are kk -D'Atri spaces for some k3.k\geq 3. In the last case, they are kk-D'Atri for all k=1,...,n1k=1,...,n-1 as well. In particular, Damek-Ricci spaces that are kk-D'Atri for some k3k\geq 3 are symmetric. Finally, we characterize kk-D'Atri spaces for all k=1,...,n1k=1,...,n-1 as the SC% \frak{SC}-spaces (geodesic symmetries preserve the principal curvatures of small geodesic spheres). Moreover, applying this result in the case of 4% -dimensional homogeneous spaces we prove that the properties of being a D'Atri (1-D'Atri) space, or a 3-D'Atri space, are equivalent to the property of being a kk-D'Atri space for all k=1,2,3k=1,2,3.Comment: 19 pages. Early Dark Energy at High Redshifts: Status and Perspectives

Early dark energy models, for which the contribution to the dark energy density at high redshifts is not negligible, influence the growth of cosmic structures and could leave observable signatures that are different from the standard cosmological constant cold dark matter (Λ\LambdaCDM) model. In this paper, we present updated constraints on early dark energy using geometrical and dynamical probes. From WMAP five-year data, baryon acoustic oscillations and type Ia supernovae luminosity distances, we obtain an upper limit of the dark energy density at the last scattering surface (lss), ΩEDE(zlss)<2.3×102\Omega_{\rm EDE}(z_{\rm lss})<2.3\times10^{-2} (95% C.L.). When we include higher redshift observational probes, such as measurements of the linear growth factors, Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Lyman-α\alpha forest (\lya), this limit improves significantly and becomes ΩEDE(zlss)<1.4×103\Omega_{\rm EDE}(z_{\rm lss})<1.4\times10^{-3} (95% C.L.). Furthermore, we find that future measurements, based on the Alcock-Paczy\'nski test using the 21cm neutral hydrogen line, on GRBs and on the \lya forest, could constrain the behavior of the dark energy component and distinguish at a high confidence level between early dark energy models and pure Λ\LambdaCDM. In this case, the constraints on the amount of early dark energy at the last scattering surface improve by a factor ten, when compared to present constraints. We also discuss the impact on the parameter γ\gamma, the growth rate index, which describes the growth of structures in standard and in modified gravity models.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures and 4 table

Measurement of the Transverse-Longitudinal Cross Sections in the p (e,e'p)pi0 Reaction in the Delta Region

    Get PDF
Accurate measurements of the p(e,e?p)pi0 reaction were performed at Q^2=0.127(GeV/c)^2 in the Delta resonance energy region. The experiments at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator used an 820 MeV polarized electron beam with the out of plane magnetic spectrometer system (OOPS). In this paper we report the first simultaneous determination of both the TL and TL? (``fifth" or polarized) cross sections at low Q^{2} where the pion cloud contribution dominates the quadrupole amplitudes (E2 and C2). The real and imaginary parts of the transverse-longitudinal cross section provide both a sensitive determination of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude and a test of reaction calculations. Comparisons with model calculations are presented. The empirical MAID calculation gives the best overall agreement with this accurate data. The parameters of this model for the values of the resonant multipoles are |M_{1+}(I=3/2)|= (40.9 \pm 0.3)10^{-3}/m_pi, CMR= C2/M1= -6.5 \pm 0.3%, EMR=E2/M1=-2.2 \pm 0.9%, where the errors are due to the experimental uncertainties.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, minor corrections and addition
