Eros and Pilgrimage in Chaucer’s and Shakespeare’s Poetry
The paper discusses erotic desire and the motif of going on pilgrimage in the opening of Geoffrey Chaucer’s General Prologue to The Canterbury Tales and in William Shakespeare’s sonnets. What connects most of the texts chosen for consideration in the paper is their diptych-like composition, corresponding to the dual theme of eros and pilgrimage. At the outset, I read the first eighteen lines of Chaucer’s Prologue and demonstrate how the passage attempts to balance and reconcile the eroticism underlying the description of nature at springtime with Christian devotion and the spirit of compunction. I support the view that the passage is the first wing of a diptych-like construction opening the General Prologue. The second part of the paper focuses on the motif of pilgrimage, particularly erotic pilgrimage, in Shakespeare’s sonnets. I observe that most of the sonnets that exploit the conceit of travel to the beloved form lyrical diptychs. Shakespeare reverses the medieval hierarchy of pilgrimage and desire espoused by Chaucer. Both poets explore and use to their own ends the tensions inherent in the juxtaposition of sacred and profane love. Their compositions encode deeper emotional patterns of desire: Chaucer’s narrator channels sexual drives into the route of communal national penance, whereas the Shakespearean persona employs religious sentiments in the service of private erotic infatuations
A popular code for the annunciation in Medieval English lyrics
The paper deals with a popular type of the Annunciation lyric in medieval English poetry. A brief
survey of the role of the angelic announcement to Mary in medieval art and culture is given. The
argument then pursues several distinctive traits of this kind of lyric in a number of poems from
the thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries. The distinguishing features include a tripartite
structure, a common set of words, phrases, ideas and images, emphasis on singing, a spring setting,
tryst between lovers, and the use of popular genres, particularly ballads and carols. By analogy
with music, it is argued that a certain popular code for the Annunciation existed, against
which interesting artistic transformations of the theme were introduced. For example, the Annunciation
was evoked in a highly compressed and allusive manner by means of but a few elements
of the code. The principal elements of the alleged code derived from popular art and imagination.
Their application to theological issues frequently led to the blurring of boundaries between the
sacred and the profane, and between the Christian and the pagan. The paper proposes a distinction
between Lent and alleluia subtypes of the Annunciation lyric. It also demonstrates how the pastourelle,
aubade, and chanson d’aventure conventions of secular love poetry were adapted to
represent the Annunciation. Finally, it suggests a connection between the lyric “At a spryng wel”
and a specific statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, like the much-reverenced statue of Our Lady at
Walsingham
Diversity of fungi colonizing leaves of Rhododendron (Rhododendron L.) cuttings
Rhododendrons (Rhododendron L.) are shrubs whose attractiveness is determined by their multi-coloured flowers and evergreen leaves. Necroses visible on the leaves of rhododendron cuttings diminish the suitability of nursery material for marketing. These symptoms are most frequently caused by fungi. The investigations were conducted in 2010–2011 in an ornamental shrub nursery to identify fungi colonizing the phyllosphere of rhododendron cuttings and causing leaf necroses. The material for analysis consisted of leaves of 11 rhododendron cultivars. 550 leaves were collected from 110 half-year-old cuttings for mycological analysis. Over 350 fungal colonies belonging to 15 species were isolated from the leaves of rhododendron cuttings. The dominants included: Pestalotiopsis sydowiana, Trichoderma koningii and Alternaria alternata. The influents included: Aspergillus brasiliensis, Mucor hiemalis f. hiemalis, Epicoccum nigrum, Sordaria fimicola and Umbelopsis isabellina. A large majority of the fungi preferred the phyllosphere environment of Yakushima rhododendron (R. yakushimanum) cultivars ‘Sneezy’ and ‘Golden Torch’ as well as of the large-flowered cultivars ‘Flautando’, ‘Dominik’, and ‘Simona’. The phyllosphere of the large-flowered cultivars ‘Bernstein’, ‘Nova Zembla’, and ‘Goldbuckett’ was a reservoir for many fungal colonies and fungi species. The cultivars less susceptible to colonization by fungi and the most promising for planting in green areas and home gardens are the large-flowered cultivars ‘Bernstein’, ‘Nova Zembla’, ‘Goldbuckett’, ‘Rasputin’, and ‘Roseum Elegans’
The effect of protozoa on the bacterial composition and hydrolytic activity of the roe deer rumen.
© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of the presence of protozoa in the rumen of wild roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) on the bacteria composition and digestion rate of the main carbohydrates of forage. The research material involved rumen content and rumen fluid, which were collected in the autumn-winter season, from eight adult males of roe deer with an average body mass of 22.6 kg. The microscopic analysis demonstrated that there were only protozoa in 50% of the animals sampled. Qualitative analysis revealed the presence of protozoa belonging to the genus Entodinium. The density of protozoal population varied from 6.5 to 38.7 × 105/mL rumen fluid. The analysis of bacteria composition indicated that protozoa did not have an effect on bacterial diversity. Furthermore, the results of hydrolytic activity revealed that the fastest digestion of carbohydrates was for pectin, while the slowest was inulin. The pH and redox potential in the rumen varied from 5.9 to 6.1 and from −248.1 to −251.1 mV, respectively. In summary, the presence of protozoa in the rumen of wild roe deer does not have an effect on the bacterial population and has no effect on the digestion rate of carbohydrates in the rumen
Micromycetes colonizing and damaging leaves of evergreen rhododendron (Rhododendron L.) in nursery
In May and October 2010–2012, mycological studies were conducted on 10 cultivars of rhododendron bushes growing in containers in the nursery of ornamental plants. Out of 3000 specimens of infested leaf fragments, 2566 fungal colonies belonging to 41 species were isolated. The following species colonizing the leaves and causing their necrosis were extracted in the largest number of colonies: Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, Epicoccum nigrum, Humicola grisea, Pestalotiopsis sydowiana, Phoma pomorum, Sordaria fimicola, Trichoderma koningii, Trichoderma polysporum, Truncatella truncata, Umbelopsis isabellina and others. The research showed that the micromycetes colonies colonizing and damaging rhododendron leaves varied in species composition and number of colonies in different years and at different times. The study determined which rhododendron cultivars were characterized by good health and which had the greatest susceptibility to infection by micromycetes

Cosmic ray driven dynamo in barred and ringed galaxies
We study the global evolution of the magnetic field and interstellar medium (ISM) of the barred and ringed galaxies in the presence of non-axisymmetric components of the potential, i.e. the bar and/or the oval perturbations. The magnetohydrodynamical dynamo is driven by cosmic rays (CR), which are continuously supplied to the disk by supernova (SN) remnants. Additionally, weak, dipolar and randomly oriented magnetic field is injected to the galactic disk during SN explosions. To compare our results directly with the observed properties of galaxies we construct realistic maps of high-frequency polarized radio emission. The main result is that CR driven dynamo can amplify weak magnetic fields up to few G within few Gyr in barred and ringed galaxies. What is more, the modelled magnetic field configuration resembles maps of the polarized intensity observed in barred and ringed galaxies
Młody pacjent z otyłością olbrzymią i niewydolnością serca — wpływ treningu fizycznego na przebieg choroby
According to the Central Statistical Office of Poland report “The health status of the Polish population in 2009”, 16.5% of Polish men and 15% of Polish women are obese. We report the case of a 32-year-old man with morbid obesity (body mass index [BMI] 51 kg/m2) and a four-year history of untreated hypertension admitted to hospital for symptoms of heart failure (HF), New Year Heart Association class IV and markedly elevated blood pressure (BP). He was prescribed appropriate medical treatment, calorie restriction to 1000–1200 kcal/day and regular, gradually increased physical activity. After one year, the body weight was reduced by approximately 70 kg (BMI 29.5 kg/m2), BP was adequately controlled and the symptoms and signs of HF subsided. This improved condition was maintained for 2 years until 2010 when the patient broke his leg and had to discontinue temporarily physical training while he was not able to sustain calorie restrictions and resumed his previous eating habits. As a result, over 3 years his body weight dramatically increased to 172 kg (BMI 54 kg/m2) and elevated BP required greater intensity of antihypertensive treatment. However, the patient remained free from HF symptoms and continued to demonstrate satisfactory exercise tolerance.Zgodnie z raportem Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego „Stan zdrowia ludności w 2009 r.” problem otyłości dotyczy w Polsce 16,5% mężczyzn i 15% kobiet. W 2010 roku pacjent złamał nogę, co zmusiło go do czasowego zaprzestania treningu fizycznego. Jednocześnie przestał przestrzegać ograniczeń dietetycznych. Spowodowało to w ciągu 3 lat gwałtowne zwiększenie masy ciała do 172 kg (BMI 54 kg/m2) i wzrost wartości RR, co wymagało intensyfikacji leczenia hipotensyjnego. Nie obserwowano natomiast objawów HF; nadal utrzymywała się również dobra tolerancja wysiłku
Growth performance, carcass and meat quality of lambs supplemented different vegetable oils
Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rapeseed and linseed oil supplementations on performance and meat quality of lambs. Methods The experiment was conducted on 18 growing (100-day-old) lambs of 19.7±1.9 kg live weight, assigned to 3 groups of 6 animals each. Control lambs were fed meadow hay and concentrate alone. Experimental animals additionally received rapeseed or linseed oils at a dose of 50 g/d. The lambs were slaughtered at an average body weight of 35.7±0.5 kg. Results The dressing percentage was higher in lambs fed rapeseed oil. Total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and C15:0, C16:0, C17:0, C21:0, C24:0 were lower in longissimus dorsi muscle (MLD) in lambs fed linseed oil. Supplementation of diet with linseed oil decreased concentrations of total monounsaturated fatty acids and C16:1, C17:1, C18:1 cis-9 in MLD. The concentrations of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and C18:3 n-3, C20:5 n-3 in MLD were higher in lambs fed linseed oil than in other groups. Oils supplementation to diets resulted in increased concentration of C22:6 n-3 in MLD. The inclusion of linseed oil into the diet increased the contents of total PUFA, n-3 PUFA and C18:3 n-3, C20:5 n-3, C22:6 n-3 in semitendinosus muscle in comparison to control. A tendency towards a lower n:6/n:3 ratio in MLD was observed when lambs were supplemented linseed oil. Conclusion The supplementation of linseed oil to diets seems to reduce the concentration of SFA and increase the concentration of n-3 PUFA. The n-6/n-3 ratio is an important nutritional factor, and its value has been favorably decreased below 2, thereby achieving an important target related to human health. Due to these changes carcass fatty acid profile was improved, and so enhanced lamb meat healthy properties
