    Galactic Foreground Constraints from the Python V Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Data

    We constrain Galactic foreground contamination of the Python V cosmic microwave background anisotropy data by cross correlating it with foreground contaminant emission templates. To model foreground emission we use 100 and 12 Ό\mum dust emission templates and two point source templates based on the PMN survey. The analysis takes account of inter-modulation correlations in 8 modulations of the data that are sensitive to a large range of angular scales and also densely sample a large area of sky. As a consequence the analysis here is highly constraining. We find little evidence for foreground contamination in an analysis of the whole data set. However, there is indication that foregrounds are present in the data from the larger-angular-scale modulations of those Python V fields that overlap the region scanned earlier by the UCSB South Pole 1994 experiment.     Neck atonia with a focal stimulation-induced seizure arising from the SMA: pathophysiological considerations.

    A 28-year-old patient with pharmacoresistant non-lesional right frontal epilepsy underwent extra-operative intracranial EEG recordings and electrical cortical stimulation (ECS) to map eloquent cortex. Right supplementary motor area (SMA) ECS induced a brief seizure with habitual symptoms involving neck tingling followed by asymmetric tonic posturing. An additional feature was neck atonia. During atonia and sensory aura, discharges were seen in the mesial frontal electrodes and precentral gyrus. Besides motor signs, atonia, although rare and not described in the neck muscles, and sensations have been reported with SMA stimulation. The mechanisms underlying neck atonia in seizures arising from the SMA can be explained by supplementary negative motor area (SNMA) - though this was not mapped in electrodes overlying the ictal onset zone in our patient - or primary sensorimotor cortex activation through rapid propagation. Given the broad spectrum of signs elicited by SMA stimulation and rapid spread of seizures arising from the SMA, caution should be taken to not diagnose these as non-epileptic, as had previously occurred in this patient

    There has been growing evidence for a critical role of oxidative stress in neurodegenerative disease, providing novel targets for disease modifying treatments. Although antioxidants have been suggested and tried in the treatment of epilepsy, it is only recently that the pivotal role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of status epilepticus has been recognized. Although conventionally thought to be generated by mitochondria, reactive oxygen species during status epilepticus and prolonged seizure are generated mainly by NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) oxidase (stimulated by NMDA receptor activation). Excessive production of reactive oxygen species results in lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, enzyme inhibition, and mitochondrial damage, culminating in neuronal death. Antioxidant therapy has been hampered by poor CNS penetration and rapid consumption by oxidants. However, alternative approaches such as inhibiting NADPH oxidase or increasing endogenous antioxidant defenses through activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) could avoid these problems. Small molecules that increase Nrf2 activation have proven to be not only effective neuroprotectants following status epilepticus, but also potently antiepileptogenic.     DASI Three-Year Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Results

    We present the analysis of the complete 3-year data set obtained with the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI) polarization experiment, operating from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station. Additional data obtained at the end of the 2002 Austral winter and throughout the 2003 season were added to the data from which the first detection of polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation was reported. The analysis of the combined data supports, with increased statistical power, all of the conclusions drawn from the initial data set. In particular, the detection of E-mode polarization is increased to 6.3 sigma confidence level, TE cross-polarization is detected at 2.9 sigma, and B-mode polarization is consistent with zero, with an upper limit well below the level of the detected E-mode polarization. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the cosmological model that has emerged from CMB temperature measurements.     This PhD by Publication project is based on research examining reflectively my practice. It includes a summary of my practice, its themes of inquiry and modes of production. The invitation has generated an investigation into my way of practicing and into its concerns. The research explores key areas of interest: Virtual Architecture, Object Architecture and the spatialisation of information. This research investigation the operations and processes of my practice to date. The development of my practice has been mapped and this catalogue illustrates the disparate parts and associations that frame each project. The evolution of the practice through three key periods of change is documented revealing the transitions through various stages of practice. The work is presented through an interactive tool that captures the concerns that informed the core systems, that informed the projects. The PhD closely scrutinises the makings of projects and their concerns and reveals the makings of the practice. To structure these processes I have created a series of categorisations and strategic associations and have assembled projects into networks of cells. These categories can be read as connections linking five primary functions as the tools for a web based app or application. This app was instigated as data visualisation tool and as a system for analytically referencing networks of projects that make up the structure of the practice: past, present and future

    Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Measurement From Python V

    We analyze observations of the microwave sky made with the Python experiment in its fifth year of operation at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. After modeling the noise and constructing a map, we extract the cosmic signal from the data. We simultaneously estimate the angular power spectrum in eight bands ranging from large (l ~ 40) to small (l ~ 260) angular scales, with power detected in the first six bands. There is a significant rise in the power spectrum from large to smaller (l ~ 200) scales, consistent with that expected from acoustic oscillations in the early Universe. We compare this Python V map to a map made from data taken in the third year of Python. Python III observations were made at a frequency of 90 GHz and covered a subset of the region of the sky covered by Python V observations, which were made at 40 GHz.     A Millimeter-wave Galactic Plane Survey with the BICEP Polarimeter

    In order to study inflationary cosmology and the Milky Way Galaxy's composition and magnetic field structure, Stokes I, Q, and U maps of the Galactic plane covering the Galactic longitude range 260° < ℓ < 340° in three atmospheric transmission windows centered on 100, 150, and 220 GHz are presented. The maps sample an optical depth 1 ≟ AV ≟ 30, and are consistent with previous characterizations of the Galactic millimeter-wave frequency spectrum and the large-scale magnetic field structure permeating the interstellar medium. The polarization angles in all three bands are generally perpendicular to those measured by starlight polarimetry as expected and show changes in the structure of the Galactic magnetic field on the scale of 60°. The frequency spectrum of degree-scale Galactic emission is plotted between 23 and 220 GHz (including WMAP data) and is fit to a two-component (synchrotron and dust) model showing that the higher frequency BICEP data are necessary to tightly constrain the amplitude and spectral index of Galactic dust. Polarized emission is detected over the entire region within two degrees of the Galactic plane, indicating the large-scale magnetic field is oriented parallel to the plane of the Galaxy. A trend of decreasing polarization fraction with increasing total intensity is observed, ruling out the simplest model of a constant Galactic magnetic field orientation along the line of sight in the Galactic plane. A generally increasing trend of polarization fraction with electromagnetic frequency is found, varying from 0.5%-1.5% at frequencies below 50 GHz to 2.5%-3.5% above 90 GHz.     Memory Performance is Related to Language Dominance as Determined by the intracarotid amobarbital procedure

    Objective The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between language and memory lateralization in patients with epilepsy undergoing the intracarotid amobarbital procedure. Methods In 386 patients, language lateralization and memory lateralization as determined by laterality index (LI) were correlated with each other. Results Language lateralization and memory lateralization were positively correlated (r = 0.34, P \u3c 0.01). Correlations differed depending on the presence and type of lesion (χ2 = 7.98, P \u3c 0.05). LIs correlated significantly higher (z = 2.82, P \u3c 0.05) in patients with cortical dysplasia (n = 41, r = 0.61, P \u3c 0.01) compared with the group without lesions (n = 90, r = 0.16, P \u3e 0.05), with patients with hippocampal sclerosis falling between these two groups. Both memory (P \u3c 0.01) and language (P \u3c 0.01) LIs were higher in right- compared with left-sided lesions.
