    - One of the issues of national food security is the availability of staple food in the form of rice in a sustainability. The availability of paddy fields in West Limboto subdistrict, which is one of the rice producing areas in Gorontalo Regency needs to be interpreted to be known if there is land conversion in the future. Calculation of rice fields can be interpreted using remote sensing data. The purpose of this research is to interpreationt the extent of paddy field located in West Limboto subdistrict. Landsat 8 OLI (Operational Land Imager) acquired November 20, 2015 is the data used in this study. GPS measuring instrument is used as a tool for checking the coordinates of sample points that will be in the fiel d check. The method by digital image processing landsat 8 OLI using supervised classification algorithm maximum likelihood. Landsat 8 layer stacking process then do corrected geometric. Unsupervised classification is performed as an initial interpretation stage to classify land cover and also as sample point extraction. Total 18 sample points were taken that were used for ground data. Reclassified using supervised method processing after finished ground data.     The occupation of a box as a toy model for the seismic cycle of a fault

    We illustrate how a simple statistical model can describe the quasiperiodic occurrence of large earthquakes. The model idealizes the loading of elastic energy in a seismic fault by the stochastic filling of a box. The emptying of the box after it is full is analogous to the generation of a large earthquake in which the fault relaxes after having been loaded to its failure threshold. The duration of the filling process is analogous to the seismic cycle, the time interval between two successive large earthquakes in a particular fault. The simplicity of the model enables us to derive the statistical distribution of its seismic cycle. We use this distribution to fit the series of earthquakes with magnitude around 6 that occurred at the Parkfield segment of the San Andreas fault in California. Using this fit, we estimate the probability of the next large earthquake at Parkfield and devise a simple forecasting strategy.Comment: Final version of the published paper, with an erratum and an unpublished appendix with some proof

    Measurement of the electron transmission rate of the gating foil for the TPC of the ILC experiment

    We have developed a gating foil for the time projection chamber envisaged as a central tracker for the international linear collider experiment. It has a structure similar to the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) with a higher optical aperture ratio and functions as an ion gate without gas amplification. The transmission rate for electrons was measured in a counting mode for a wide range of the voltages applied across the foil using an 55^{55}Fe source and a laser in the absence of a magnetic field.     Investigation of wedge water-entry under symmetric impact loads by experimental tests

    One of the main challenges for engineers in designing high-speed crafts is the evaluation of hydrodynamic loads during the impact of hull to wave’s surface. This paper presents an experimental investigation on the pressure distribution on three wedge-sections with 15°, 20° and 30° deadrise during water-entry. Assessment of pressure distribution on the effects of parameters such as drop heights, deadrise angles and the weights of the models had done. Time histories of impact pressure were recorded. It was showed that, the maximum pressure for 20° wedge had increased 2.4 times in comparison with 30° wedge while this number is 1.23 time for the 15° wedge. But the effects of weight and drop height were not as much as deadrise angle. The results give an appropriate approximation of the maximum pressures by the model resembling high-speed craft’s hull sections, which can be used to estimate impact loads in different operational condition. The condition of water level during the impact process has also been observed in each test. The nature of impact test with non-constant speed can clarify the real behavior of falling objects, which can be assumed as the significance of current study

    Towards an Efficient Finite Element Method for the Integral Fractional Laplacian on Polygonal Domains

    We explore the connection between fractional order partial differential equations in two or more spatial dimensions with boundary integral operators to develop techniques that enable one to efficiently tackle the integral fractional Laplacian. In particular, we develop techniques for the treatment of the dense stiffness matrix including the computation of the entries, the efficient assembly and storage of a sparse approximation and the efficient solution of the resulting equations. The main idea consists of generalising proven techniques for the treatment of boundary integral equations to general fractional orders. Importantly, the approximation does not make any strong assumptions on the shape of the underlying domain and does not rely on any special structure of the matrix that could be exploited by fast transforms. We demonstrate the flexibility and performance of this approach in a couple of two-dimensional numerical examples

    Oxytocin/vasopressin-like peptides are important regulators of physiology and social behavior in vertebrates. However, the function of inotocin, the homologous peptide in arthropods, remains largely unknown. Here, we show that the level of expression of inotocin and inotocin receptor are correlated with task allocation in the ant Camponotus fellah Both genes are up-regulated when workers age and switch tasks from nursing to foraging. in situ hybridization revealed that inotocin receptor is specifically expressed in oenocytes, which are specialized cells synthesizing cuticular hydrocarbons which function as desiccation barriers in insects and for social recognition in ants. dsRNA injection targeting inotocin receptor, together with pharmacological treatments using three identified antagonists blocking inotocin signaling, revealed that inotocin signaling regulates the expression of cytochrome P450 4G1 (CYP4G1) and the synthesis of cuticular hydrocarbons, which play an important role in desiccation resistance once workers initiate foraging

    Wave exciting forces of a free floating semi submersible in regular waves

    Drilling and production of oil by semi submersible take place in many locations throughout the world. Generally, floating structures play an important role in exploring the oil and gas from the sea. The force and motion prediction of offshore structures may be carried out using time domain or frequency domain models or model tests. In this paper the frequency domain analysis used because it is the simplified and linearized form of the equations of motion. The time domain analysis, unlike frequency domain models, is adequate to deal with non-linearities such as viscous damping and mooring forces, but it requires sophisticated solution techniques and it is expensive to employ. In this paper, the wave exciting forces of a free floating semi-submersible were carried out using 3D source distribution method within the scope of the linear wave theory. The results obtained from computations were also compared with the results obtained using commercial software MOSES and WAMIT

    Oral transfer of chemical cues, growth proteins and hormones in social insects.

    Social insects frequently engage in oral fluid exchange - trophallaxis - between adults, and between adults and larvae. Although trophallaxis is widely considered a food-sharing mechanism, we hypothesized that endogenous components of this fluid might underlie a novel means of chemical communication between colony members. Through protein and small-molecule mass spectrometry and RNA sequencing, we found that trophallactic fluid in the ant Camponotus floridanus contains a set of specific digestion- and non-digestion related proteins, as well as hydrocarbons, microRNAs, and a key developmental regulator, juvenile hormone. When C. floridanus workers' food was supplemented with this hormone, the larvae they reared via trophallaxis were twice as likely to complete metamorphosis and became larger workers. Comparison of trophallactic fluid proteins across social insect species revealed that many are regulators of growth, development and behavioral maturation. These results suggest that trophallaxis plays previously unsuspected roles in communication and enables communal control of colony phenotypes

    Imexon augments sensitivity of human lymphoma cells to ionizing radiation: in vitro experimental study

    BACKGROUND: Imexon is an aziridine-containing small pro-oxidant molecule with promising antitumor activity in myeloma, lymphoma and lung and pancreatic cancer. Imexon is already in clinical trials in patients with advanced solid tumors. The present study examined the effects of imexon on H9 and Raji lymphoma cell lines in vitro when given in combination with ionizing radiation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: H9 and Raji lymphoma cells were grown in culture and exposed to imexon, radiation, or both. Cells were assessed for cell viability, glutathione content, induction of apoptosis, cell cycle distribution and also subject to Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Imexon inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Imexon, given for 48 h prior to irradiation at a clinically achievable dose of 40 muM, potently enhanced the cell radiosensitivity. Imexon enhanced radiation-induced apoptosis and accumulated cells in G2/M phase of the cell cycle. Imexon induced caspase-3 activation and PARP cleavage. Alterations in glutathione levels were not observed at 40 microM of imexon. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, imexon efficiently augmented lymphoma cell radiosensitivity independently of glutathione and the underlying mechanisms include induction of apoptosis and cell cycle redistribution
