Phenex: Ontological Annotation of Phenotypic Diversity
Phenex is a platform-independent desktop application designed to facilitate efficient and consistent annotation of phenotypic variation using Entity-Quality syntax, drawing on terms from community ontologies for anatomical entities, phenotypic qualities, and taxonomic names. Despite the centrality of the phenotype to so much of biology, traditions for communicating information about phenotypes are idiosyncratic to different disciplines. Phenotypes seem to elude standardized descriptions due to the variety of traits that compose them and the difficulty of capturing the complex forms and subtle differences among organisms that we can readily observe. Consequently, phenotypes are refractory to attempts at data integration that would allow computational analyses across studies and study systems. Phenex addresses this problem by allowing scientists to employ standard ontologies and syntax to link computable phenotype annotations to evolutionary character matrices, as well as to link taxa and specimens to ontological identifiers. Ontologies have become a foundational technology for establishing shared semantics, and, more generally, for capturing and computing with biological knowledge
A Machine Checked Model of Idempotent MGU Axioms For Lists of Equational Constraints
We present formalized proofs verifying that the first-order unification
algorithm defined over lists of satisfiable constraints generates a most
general unifier (MGU), which also happens to be idempotent. All of our proofs
have been formalized in the Coq theorem prover. Our proofs show that finite
maps produced by the unification algorithm provide a model of the axioms
characterizing idempotent MGUs of lists of constraints. The axioms that serve
as the basis for our verification are derived from a standard set by extending
them to lists of constraints. For us, constraints are equalities between terms
in the language of simple types. Substitutions are formally modeled as finite
maps using the Coq library Coq.FSets.FMapInterface. Coq's method of functional

Histological healing favors lower risk of colon carcinoma in extensive ulcerative colitis
AIM: To search for the answer in extensive ulcerative colitis as to whether histological inflammation persisting despite endoscopic mucosal healing serves to increase the risk of colon cancer (CC) or high grade dysplasia (HGD). METHODS: This is a single center (Lenox Hill Hospital) retrospective cohort and descriptive study of extensive ulcerative colitis (UC) for 20 years or more with a minimum of 3 surveillance colonoscopies and biopsies performed after the first 10 years of UC diagnosis. Data analyzed included: duration of UC, date of diagnosis of (CC) or (HGD), number of surveillance colonoscopies, and biopsies showing histological inflammation and its severity in each of 6 segments when endoscopic appearance is normal. Two subgroups of patients were compared: group 1 patients who developed CC/HGD and group 2 patients who did not develop CC/HGD. RESULTS: Of 115 patients with longstanding UC reviewed, 68 patients met the inclusion criteria. Twenty patients were in group 1 and 48 in group 2. We identified the number of times for each patient when the endoscopic appearance was normal but biopsies nevertheless showed inflammation. Overall, histological disease activity in the absence of gross/endoscopic disease was found in 31.2% (95% CI: 28%-35%) of colonoscopies performed on the entire cohort of 68 patients. Histological disease activity when the colonoscopy showed an absence of gross disease activity was more common in group 1 than group 2 patients, 88% (95% CI: 72%-97%) vs 59% (95% CI: 53%-64%). Only 3/20 (15%) of patients in group 1 ever had a colonoscopy completely without demonstrated disease activity (i.e., no endoscopic or histological activity) as compared to 37/48 (77%) of patients in group 2, and only 3.3% (95% CI: 0.09%-8.3%) of colonoscopies in group 1 had no histological inflammation compared to 23% (95% CI: 20%-27%) in group 2. CONCLUSION: Progression to HGD or CC in extensive ulcerative colitis of long standing was more frequently encountered among those patients who demonstrate persistent histological inflammation in the absence of gross mucosal disease. Our findings support including the elimination of histological inflammation in the definition of mucosal healing, and support this endpoint as an appropriate goal of therapy because of its risk of increasing dysplasia and colon cancer. Return Predictability: The Dual Signaling Hypothesis of Stock Splits
This paper aims to differentiate between optimistic splits and overoptimistic/opportunistic splits. Although markets do not distinguish between these two groups at the split announcement time, optimistic (over-optimistic/opportunistic) splits precede positive (negative) long-term buy-and-hold abnormal returns. Using the calendar month portfolio approach, we show that the zero-investment, ex-ante identifiable, and fully implementable trading strategy proposed in this paper can generate economically and statistically significant positive abnormal returns. Our findings indicate that pre-split earnings management and how it relates to managers’ incentives, is an omitted variable in the studies of post-split long-term abnormal returns
Economical (k,m)-threshold controlled quantum teleportation
We study a (k,m)-threshold controlling scheme for controlled quantum
teleportation. A standard polynomial coding over GF(p) with prime p > m-1 needs
to distribute a d-dimensional qudit with d >= p to each controller for this
purpose. We propose a scheme using m qubits (two-dimensional qudits) for the
controllers' portion, following a discussion on the benefit of a quantum

White dwarfs as test objects of Lorentz violations
In the present work the thermodynamical properties of bosonic and fermionic
gases are analyzed under the condition that a modified dispersion relation is
present. This last condition implies a breakdown of Lorentz symmetry. The
implications upon the condensation temperature will be studied, as well, as
upon other thermodynamical variables such as specific heat, entropy, etc.
Moreover, it will be argued that those cases entailing a violation of time
reversal symmetry of the motion equations could lead to problems with the
concept of entropy. Concerning the fermionic case it will be shown that Fermi
temperature suffers a modification due to the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry.
The results will be applied to white dwarfs and the consequences upon the
Chandrasekhar mass--radius relation will be shown. The possibility of resorting
to white dwarfs for the testing of modified dispersion relations is also
addressed. It will be shown that the comparison of the current observations
against the predictions of our model allows us to discard some values of one of

Electrochemical Deposition and Characterization of Fe₃O₄ Films Produced by the Reduction of Fe(III)-triethanolamine
In this paper, we demonstrate that films of magnetite, Fe3O4, can be deposited by the electrochemical reduction of a Fe(III)-triethanolamine complex in aqueous alkaline solution. the films were deposited with a columnar microstructure and a [100] preferred orientation on stainless steel substrates. In-plane electrical transport and magnetoresistance measurements were performed on the films after they were stripped off onto glass substrates. the resistance of the films was dependent on the oxygen partial pressure. We attribute the increase in resistance in O2 and the decrease in resistance in Ar to the oxidation and reduction of grain boundaries. the decrease in resistance in an Ar atmosphere exhibited first-order kinetics, with an activation energy of 0.2 eV. the temperature dependence of the resistance showed a linear dependence of log(R) versus T-1/2, consistent with tunneling across resistive grain boundaries. a room-temperature magnetoresistance of -6.5% was observed at a magnetic field of 9 T
