    Bacterial Secondary Metabolites as Biopigments for Textile Dyeing

    In the past two decades, a growing body of research regarding the utilization of natural bacterial pigments or dyes for textile dyeing has emerged. Bacterial pigments are bacterial secondary metabolites that usually have bright colors and some special properties (e.g., antimicrobial, antioxidative, UV protective etc.). In addition to their high production yield, these special properties led scientists to research and develop methods for utilizing bacterial pigments in textile dyeing. This study presents the current state this field of research, with a focus on the dyeing potential of bacterial pigments for different types of textile material. The potential future directions of research in this area are also highlighted. In addition to the durable dyeing of textiles, bacterial pigments with special properties, such as antimicrobial activity, can add multifunctionality to dyed materials, thus increasing the value of the final product. This emerging field of research will also have a great impact on sustainability and the environment, contributing to the decreased usage of synthetic dyes in the textile industry.This work was supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia (contract no. 451-03-68/2022-14/200135)

    Quality of clothing fabrics in terms of their comfort properties

    Quality of various clothing woven fabrics with respect to their comfort properties, such as electro-physical properties, air permeability, and compression properties has been studied. Fabrics are produced from cotton and cotton/polyester fibre blends in plain, twill, satin and basket weave. Results show that cotton fabrics have lower values of the volume resistivity, air permeability and compressive resilience but higher values of effective relative dielectric permeability and compressibility as compared to fabrics that have been produced from cotton/PES fibre blends. Regression analysis shows a strong linear correlative relationship between the air permeability and the porosity of the woven fabrics with very high coefficient of linear correlation (0.9807). It is also observed that comfort properties are determined by the structure of woven fabrics (raw material composition, type of weave) as well as by the fabrics surface condition. Findings of the studies have been used for estimating the quality of woven fabrics in terms of their comfort properties by the application of ranking method. It is concluded that the group of cotton fabrics exhibits better quality of comfort as compared to the group of cotton/PES blend fabrics.

    Compression and strength behaviour of viscose/polypropylene nonwoven fabrics

    Compression and strength properties of viscose/polypropylene nonwoven fabrics has been studied. Compressionbehavior of the nonwoven samples (sample compressibility, sample thickness loss & sample compressive resilience) havebeen analyzed considering the magnitude of applied pressure, fabric weight, fabric thickness, and the porosity of thesamples. Based on the calculated porosity of the samples, pore compression behavior (pore compressibility, porosity loss &pore compressive resilience) are determined. Equations for the determination of pore compressibility, porosity loss, and porecompressive resilience, are established. Tensile strength and elongation as well as bursting strength and ball traverseelongation are also determined. The results show that the sample compression behavior as well as pore compressionbehavior depend on the magnitude of applied pressure. At the high level of applied pressure, a sample with highercompressibility has the lower sample compressive resilience. Differences in pore compressibility and porosity loss betweeninvestigated samples have also been registered, except in pore compressive resilience. Sample with the higher fabric weight,higher thickness, and lower porosity shows the lower sample compressibility, pore compressibility, sample thickness loss,porosity loss, and tensile elongation, but the higher tensile strength, bursting strength, and ball traverse elongation

    Savremeni pristupi u monitoringu kvaliteta voda u akvakulturi

    Merenje fizičkih, hemijskih, bioloÅ”kih parametara je važno za praćenje stanja kvaliteta voda, a samim tim i veoma važno i u akvakulturi. Visokofrekventna merenja kvaliteta voda se poslednjih godina uspeÅ”no obavljaju i u Srbiji upotrebom multiparametarske sonde, jednostavne za rukovanje a složene po pitanju parametara koje može meriti u istom trenutku. Potreba za kontrolom kvaliteta vode raste sa povećanjem produkcije ribnjaka. Od ekstenzivnog gajenja, poluintezivnog, preko intenzivnog i superintenzivnog gajenja ribe, proces kontrole kvaliteta vode se usložnjava, dakle od povremenog kontrolisanja kvaliteta (mesečno, kod ekstenzivne proizvodnje), preko dnevne, kontrole na sat, i konačno do kontinuiranog praćenja kontrole kvaliteta (super-intenzivno). Praćenje kvaliteta senzorima i sondom je moguce u svim navedenim tipovima ribnjaka, ali je svakako primena takve metode najpotrebnija u superintenzivnoj ribnjačkoj proizvodnji

    Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Activity of Sour Cherries From Serbia

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of phenolics: the total phenols (TP), flavonoids (TF), anthocyanins (TA), as well as the total antioxidant\ud capacity (TAC) in three sour cherry cultivars (Prunus cerasus L.) introduced to the southeast Serbia climate conditions. Among the investigated sour cherries,\ud ā€žOblačinskaā€œ cultivar contained the highest amounts of all groups of phenolics, followed by ā€žCigančicaā€œ > ā€žMarelaā€œ. A significant difference were observed in the phenolic content among different cultivars and growing seasons (p ļ€¼ 0.05), and the phenolic compounds were significantly higher in the growing season 2009. The examined cultivars possess a high antioxidant capacity, and all phenolics of highy correlation with TAC. The following compounds were identified and quantified using HPLC-DAD: 4 anthocyanins, the most abundant of which was cyanidin-3-glucoside in ā€œMarelaā€ and ā€œOblačinskaā€, and cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside in ā€žCigančicaā€œ, and 4 hydroxycinnamic acids, the most abundant of which was neochlorogenic acid in all sour cherry cultivars. The growing and ripening process on the tree of sour cherry cv. ā€žOblačinskaā€œ was evaluated also. The results showed significant increases in total phenols during the ripening, the total anthocyanins and total antioxidant capacity and 4 quantified anthocyanins, however the neochlorogenic acid decreased during the ripening. The study indicated that the growing and climate conditions in southeast Serbia are convenient for introducing sour cherry cultivars.\u

    The main objective of this study was to assess dry matter productivity of different alfalfa cultivars depending on stage of maturity and cut, as well as the optimal time of harvest to achieve the maximum yield. Dry matter yield of alfalfa and red clover depended on all three factors and their interactions. The local variety of alfalfa, K 28, was more productive (from 6,8 to 2,3 t ha-1 from first to fourth cut, and from 3,4 to 5,5 t ha-1 from first to third stage of development) compared to US variety, G+13R+CZ (from 5,9 to 2,2 t ha-1 from first to fourth cut, and from 2,7 to 5,2 t ha-1 from first to third stage of development). The maximum yield of K 28 variety could be achieved by cutting alfalfa five times a year.Cilj ovih istraživanja je bio da se utvrdi produktivnost različitih sorti lucerke u zavisnosti od faze razvića i otkosa, kao i optimalno vreme koÅ”enja radi postizanja maksimalnog prinosa. Prinos suve materije lucerke zavisio je od sva tri ispitivana faktora i njihovih interakcija. Domaća sorta lucerke je produktivnija (6,8 do 2,3 t ha-1 od prvog do četvrtog otkosa, odnosno od 3,4 do 5,5 t ha-1 od prve do treće faze razvića) u odnosu na američku (5,9 do 2,2 t ha-1 od prvog do četvrtog otkosa, odnosno od 2,7 do 5,2 t ha-1 od prve do treće faze razvića). Maksimalan prinos sorte K-28 mogao bi se postići kosidbom pet puta godiÅ”nje

    The impact of the Sava river pollution on biomarkers response in the liver and gills of three cyprinid species

    Due to the presence of a large number of different pollutants, monitoring of the surface water quality based solely on the analysis of a limited number of xenobiotics, cannot be considered as reliable. Beside toxic, these agents can exert genotoxic effects, inducing damage in the DNA molecule, which, if not repaired, could lead to mutations and alterations in cells, tissues, organism, whole population and the ecosystem. The surface waters are under the pressure of both anthropogenic and natural sources of pollution. Additionally, extreme hydrological events, such as water scarcity and flooding, may further impair the state of freshwater bodies. Fish may be exposed to harmful substances through water, sediment and food. In ecogenotoxicity studies, gills are used as they represent the first organ in direct contact with water and waterborne pollutants, while the liver, as a key organ that controls many life functions is used as a major organ for metabolic breakdown of xenobiotics. Common bream (Abramis brama), white bream (Blicca bjoerkna) and white-eye bream (Ballerus sapa) are three closely related, benthivorous cyprinids, native for the Sava River. The sampling site Duboko (23 rkm), on the Sava River, is chosen as it is exposed to the untreated wastewater from the town of Obrenovac (more than 70,000 inhabitants), intensive agricultural activity and close proximity to the largest thermal power plant in Serbia (TENTA) and belonging ash field. This study was conducted to assess the impact of multiple stressors during different seasons on different levels of biological organization, subcellular (genotoxic effect) and cellular/tissue level (histopathological effects), in the liver and gills of three bream species. As a biomarker of exposure DNA damage was measured by applying the alkaline comet assay, while histopathological alterations were monitored as a biomarker of effect. In parallel, concentration of metals and metalloids were assessed in gills, liver and muscle. Basic physical (pH, temperature, oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity) and chemical (NO2, NO3-, NH4+, PO43-) parameters were measured on site. Microbiological indicators of faecal pollution, total coliforms (TC), Escherichia coli (EC) and Enterococci (EF) were assessed by using a most probable number approach (MPN). Presumptive Clostridium perfringens (CP) numbers were determined by using membrane filtration and incubation on TSC (Tryptose Sulphite Cycloserine) media. Sampling of fish tissue for comet assay and histopathological analyses was performed in 2014, during winter (January and February), spring (March and early June), and summer (late June, July, and August), once per month, for a total of 52 specimens. Analysis of metals and metalloids was performed only on fish sampled in February, early June and in August, in total 15 specimens. In the mid May extreme hydrological events led to extensive flooding in the studied area. Comet assay was conducted on the liver and gill cells according to Kostić et al. Tail intensity, % of DNA in the comet tail (TI) was used to express the DNA damage level. Histopathological analyses included the use of conventional histological methods, staining of tissues sections using hematoxylin eosine differential staining, and examined under the microscope. The type and the extent of histological alterations were described by using a method developed by Bernet et al. Analysis of metals and metalloids was performed by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and included assessment of concentrations of 16 elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn). To compare the total metal content in different tissues and through different seasons metal pollution index (MPI) was calculated according to equation MPI = (cf1 x cf2 x cf3 xā€¦cfn) 1/n, where cfn = concentration of the metal n in the sample. Statistical analysis of data from the individual months showed the highest DNA damage in gill cells during early June (spring). Gill histopathological index (IG) did not show significant seasonal variations, however it was the lowest during winter, the highest in spring, and slightly decreased in summer. A possible cause of this incidence could be a withdrawal of water which took place in June, after the flooding event that occurred in the middle of May. In liver the highest DNA damage was observed during August. Histopathological index of liver showed significantly higher values in summer in comparison to spring. This could be prescribed to a higher metabolic rate of fish liver during warm seasons and also could be a consequence of processing a large quantities of xenobiotics introduced into the water column due to withdrawal of water after floods and sediment disturbance. According to the MPI, gills were under the highest pressure of metal pollution during spring and summer. Liver was under the highest pressure of metal pollution during winter, while the muscle was the least affected tissue during all three seasons. Overall, gills as the first organ in direct contact with water showed a higher response in terms of DNA damage (molecular level), while the liver as the major organ for processing of xenobiotics both from water and food showed a higher degree of histopathological alterations in comparison to gills (tissue/organ level). Increased response of both biomarkers during spring and summer indicates a joint effect of the flooding event and seasonal changes of climate and hydrological parameters
