Predictive parameters functioning arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis in the elderly
© 2019, University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Science. All rights reserved. Elderly patients with end stage kidney disease represent a challenge for surgeons to create a vascular access. Determine predictive parameters functionality of the arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis in the elderly. The study was organized as a retrospective study at the Center for Dialysis, Clinic for Urology and Nephrology, Clinical Center Kragujevac. The study included patients older than 65 years with arteriovenous fistula thrombosis, in the period of four years, in which there is information on the length of the functioning fistula. The study included 48 patients, mean age 71.3±5.2 years, 29 (60%) men and 19 (40%) women. The data were analyzed according to gender and demographic structure, type of anastomosis, positioning, length of functioning fistulas, and the lumen diameter of the arteries and veins that are used to create a fistula. The median length of functioning arteriovenous fistula, based on Kaplan-Meier model, is 16 months (95% CI 6.9- 25.1). Median functioning for proximaly located fistulas was 24 months (range, 1-259), while median functioning in patient with distally located fistulas was 8 months (range, 1-96). The difference in relation to the positioning of the fistula was statistically significant (p=0.006). In univariate Cox regression model, a statistically significant predictor of the functioning of arteriovenous fistulae is fistula positioning (B=0.700; p=0.022). The predictive parameter of survival of arteriovenous fistulas in elderly is proximally located fistula
Sex expression in Serbian dendroflora: A case study of Fraxinus ornus var. angustifolia
Out of a total number of tree species in Serbian flora, 28% are hermaphrodites, 43% are monoecious and 29% are dioecious. The dendroflora appears to have a larger proportion of unisexual than hermaphrodite species. The monoecious system is the dominant unisexual system within the tree species in Serbia. The possible sex differentiation by RAPD markers and Correspondence Analysis was examined in a population of Fraxinus ornus var. angustifolia. On the basis of 6 selected RAPD bands which contribute to the differentiation in frequency between male and hermaphrodite individuals, Correspondence Analysis visualized the following tendency: 20 trees of each variety were separated into two groups that mainly correspond to sexual types. Our results showed that RAPD markers assisted by Correspondence Analysis could be used in identifying male and hermaphrodite individuals in F. ornus varieties.Projekat ministarstva br. P17301

Comparison of the morphological parameters of the face in a population with a full dental arch
Introduction: The analysis of facial parameters in young people with a full dental arch is an assessment of the representation of certain anthropological features in the Serbian geographical area, but also a starting point for their reconstruction after tooth loss in order to achieve the maximum therapeutic and aesthetic effect. Aim: The aim of the work was to measure and compare facial parameters among respondents with a complete dental arch. Material and methods: 91 dental students participated in the research, 32 (35.2%) male and 59 (64.8%) female. The average age of the respondents was 22.16±1.53 years. The length and width of the face were measured, as well as the vertical and horizontal parameters, and the facial index was calculated. Results: Men had a significantly longer (Z=4.567; p<0.001) and wider face (Z=5.962; p<0.001) compared to women. There was no significant difference in the face index between women and men (ch 2 =2.492; p=0.666). There was also no significant difference in the vertical analysis of the face according to gender (ch 2 =0.065; p=0.798). In the majority of subjects, the shorter middle third of the face was measured. In the case of the expected division of the lower third of the face, it exists in a significantly greater extent in males (ch 2 =5.989; p=0.014). In the majority of subjects, the intercanthal width corresponded to the width of the eye, in both sexes, without statistical significance. Further, in a significantly larger number of male and female respondents, it was determined that the bipupillary corresponds to the intercommissural distance. The interalar distance corresponding to the width of the eye was more significantly present in women (ch 2 =5.002; p=0.025). Conclusion: Measurement of facial parameters can significantly improve dental therapy by enabling optimal aesthetic performance
Anthropometric parameters and aesthetics in the making of fixed prosthodontic restaurations: Part 2
Introduction: The role of aesthetic dentistry in the field of fixed dental prosthetics is to redesign the smile, which means not only the treatment on the teeth, but also the treatment of the surrounding soft tissues. Successful therapy can be achieved by establishing the harmony between the static (teeth, gingiva) and dynamic factors (lips, cheeks, mimic muscles) at rest and when performing various functions of the orofacial system. The aim: of the study was to analyze the parameters of the oral soft tissues (gingival health, gingival height, gingival zeniths, lip line and symmetry and balance of the dentition) that affect the aesthetics of fixed prosthodontic restorations. Literature data and clinical experience were used. Conclusion: Adherence to the described parameters is of great importance in the development of aesthetic and functional fixed prosthetic restoration
Mutations in SLC20A2 are a major cause of familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification
Familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (IBGC) or Fahr's disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by calcium deposits in the basal ganglia and other brain regions, which is associated with neuropsychiatric and motor symptoms. Familial IBGC is genetically heterogeneous and typically transmitted in an autosomal dominant fashion. We performed a mutational analysis of SLC20A2, the first gene found to cause IBGC, to assess its genetic contribution to familial IBGC. We recruited 218 subjects from 29 IBGC-affected families of varied ancestry and collected medical history, neurological exam, and head CT scans to characterize each patient's disease status. We screened our patient cohort for mutations in SLC20A2. Twelve novel (nonsense, deletions, missense, and splice site) potentially pathogenic variants, one synonymous variant, and one previously reported mutation were identified in 13 families. Variants predicted to be deleterious cosegregated with disease in five families. Three families showed nonsegregation with clinical disease of such variants, but retrospective review of clinical and neuroimaging data strongly suggested previous misclassification. Overall, mutations in SLC20A2 account for as many as 41 % of our familial IBGC cases. Our screen in a large series expands the catalog of SLC20A2 mutations identified to date and demonstrates that mutations in SLC20A2 are a major cause of familial IBGC. Non-perfect segregation patterns of predicted deleterious variants highlight the challenges of phenotypic assessment in this condition with highly variable clinical presentation
Shakespeare's history plays: Glorification or subversion of the dominant ideology?
Due to prioritizing Machiavellian power-craving aspirations over the inner voice of conscience, the majority of Shakespeare's rulers from the history plays suffers from the tragic 'dissociation of -sensibility' (Eliot 1921: 64, 66). Since the process of giving priority to public obligations instead to private inclinations is easily detected in the contemporary political scene, especially in the form of the imposed choice between legalism and morality, valuable ideas of the 20th century humanist critics (Kantorowicz, Rubenstein, Bauman, -Eliade, Hamvas) are problematized in the paper. Their contemporary insights have been combined with the humanist philosophical and ethic tradition in the works of Ovid, Ficino, Mirandola, Bruno, More. The Renaissance spokesperson of this humanist tradition was Shakespeare; through the chronological survey of his history plays, the paper aims at revealing the author's criticism of the dominant Tudor ideology and neccessity for its subversion. Thus, the attitude presented by the representatives of the new historicist critical school, particularly Stephen Greenblatt, that the renaissance social institutions shaped, restricted and controlled an individual's conduct, whereby every attempt at subverting the dominant system was doomed to failure, is strongly criticized. The importance of 'the -historical sense' (Eliot 1963: 34), the concept relying on the permanent bond between the past and present, for the sake of creating a more humane future, has been recognized in Shakespeare's history plays, apart from the already mentioned 20th century humanist thinkers, also by the presentist critics at the beginning of the 21st -century, particularly Hughes Grady and Terence Hawkes (2007), who tirelessly claim, like Jan Kott before them (1990), that Shakespeare is our contemporary
Strength testing of the relation between plate dentures and materials for making soft liners
Introduction. In clinical practice, the loss of adhesion between the denture base resin and reliner might cause the loss of material softness, water sorption, bacterial colonization and functional failure of the prosthesis. Aim. This study evaluated the effect of immersion on tensile bond strengths of four soft relining materials to a denture base acrylic resin. Material and methods. Four soft lining materials were bonded to heatpolymerized acrylic resin according to the manufacturers' directions. Forty specimens for bond strength test (10 for each liner type) were fabricated. Half of them (control group; n=5) were tested immediately after the fabrication. The other twenty specimens were stored in water at 37°C (test groups; n=5) for one week and then tested. Results. Bond strength of samples right after the fabrication is significantly higher in cases of the samples with silicone elastomer base reliner compared to the samples with soft acrylic base. Bond strength of soft reliners to a denture base resin increases after storing the samples in a water bath for one week at 37°C. Conslusion. Higher increment of tensile bond strength appeared for silicone elastomers in comparison with soft acrylic resins. There were no changes of failure mode except for GC Reline Soft application with the lowest tensile bond strength increment
The Effect of Nanofibrillated Tempo-oxidized Cotton Linters on the Strength and Optical Properties of Paper
This study elaborates the application of composite films based on nanofibrillated cellulose obtained from cotton linters oxidized in the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)/NaBr/NaClO system, with the use of CaCO3 and/or Al(OH)(3) as fillers, and glycols as plasticizers, to improve the mechanical, optical, and sorption properties of paper. The paper coating with nanofibrillated cellulose-based films, without additional adhesive, depending on the concentration of nanofibrillated cellulose in the dispersion and the type of filler, improves the mechanical properties of paper, and decreases sorption properties, while no significant changes were observed in optical properties compared to the initial papers
