The European Union, Russia and the Eastern region: The analytics of government for sustainable cohabitation

    Get PDF
This article applies the Foucauldian premise of governmentality and the analytics of government framework to demonstrate how exclusive modalities of power – of the European Union (EU) and Russia – and their competing rationalities relate, intersect and become, counter-intuitively, inextricable in their exercise of governance over the eastern neighbourhood. This particular approach focuses on power as a process to gauge the prospects for compatibility and cohabitation between the EU and Russia. Using original primary evidence, this article contends that cohabitation between these two exclusive power modalities is possible and even inevitable, if they were to legitimise their influence over the contested eastern region. It also exposes a fundamental flaw in the existing power systems, as demonstrated so vividly in the case of Ukraine – that is, a neglect for the essential value of freedom in fostering subjection to one’s authority, and the role of ‘the other’ in shaping the EU–Russian power relations in the contested regio

The Molar Volume of Molten Mixtures of MCl-LnCl2 (M = Alkali Metals, Ln = Lanthanoides)

Empirical equations for the density and molar volume of molten binary mixtures of MCl-LnCl2 and MCl-MeCl2 (M = alkali metals, Ln = lanthanoides, Me = Ca, Sr, Ba) based on the density of individual components are suggested. The equations, taking into account the deviations of the molar volumes from their additive values, are applicable to all binary systems involving known rare earth dichlorides. © 2014, Verlag der Zeitschrift für Naturforschung. Radio measurements of the energy and the depth of the shower maximum of cosmic-ray air showers by Tunka-Rex

    Get PDF
We reconstructed the energy and the position of the shower maximum of air showers with energies E100E \gtrsim 100 PeV applying a method using radio measurements performed with Tunka-Rex. An event-to-event comparison to air-Cherenkov measurements of the same air showers with the Tunka-133 photomultiplier array confirms that the radio reconstruction works reliably. The Tunka-Rex reconstruction methods and absolute scales have been tuned on CoREAS simulations and yield energy and XmaxX_{\mathrm{max}} values consistent with the Tunka-133 measurements. The results of two independent measurement seasons agree within statistical uncertainties, which gives additional confidence in the radio reconstruction. The energy precision of Tunka-Rex is comparable to the Tunka-133 precision of 1515 %, and exhibits a 2020 % uncertainty on the absolute scale dominated by the amplitude calibration of the antennas. For XmaxX_{\mathrm{max}}, this is the first direct experimental correlation of radio measurements with a different, established method. At the moment, the XmaxX_{\mathrm{max}} resolution of Tunka-Rex is approximately 4040 g/cm2^2. This resolution can probably be improved by deploying additional antennas and by further development of the reconstruction methods, since the present analysis does not yet reveal any principle limitations.Comment: accepted for publication by JCA

Tunka-Rex: the Cost-Effective Radio Extension of the Tunka Air-Shower Observatory

Tunka-Rex is the radio extension of the Tunka cosmic-ray observatory in Siberia close to Lake Baikal. Since October 2012 Tunka-Rex measures the radio signal of air-showers in coincidence with the non-imaging air-Cherenkov array Tunka-133. Furthermore, this year additional antennas will go into operation triggered by the new scintillator array Tunka-Grande measuring the secondary electrons and muons of air showers. Tunka-Rex is a demonstrator for how economic an antenna array can be without losing significant performance: we have decided for simple and robust SALLA antennas, and we share the existing DAQ running in slave mode with the PMT detectors and the scintillators, respectively. This means that Tunka-Rex is triggered externally, and does not need its own infrastructure and DAQ for hybrid measurements. By this, the performance and the added value of the supplementary radio measurements can be studied, in particular, the precision for the reconstructed energy and the shower maximum in the energy range of approximately 1017101810^{17}-10^{18}\,eV. Here we show first results on the energy reconstruction indicating that radio measurements can compete with air-Cherenkov measurements in precision. Moreover, we discuss future plans for Tunka-Rex.Comment: Proceeding of UHECR 2014, Springdale, Utah, USA, accepted by JPS Conference Proceeding

Frequency of consumption of specialty food products by sports university students and violation of the principles of their introduction to the diets

Purpose: estimate actual diet of college basketball players, including frequency of consumption of specialty foods.Materials and methods: 25 male students sports university basketball were examined (average age 20.9 ± 1.8 years). Actual nutrition was studied by the frequency method using the computer program “Analysis of Human Nutritional Status”. Data on the frequency and quantity of consumed specialized food products for the nutrition of athletes (SFP) and biologically active food additives were studied using a questionnaire. Results: the daily energy value of the diet averaged 3205 ± 520 kcal/day, 135 ± 36 g of protein per day, 155 ± 25 g/day of fats and 317 ± 72 g/day of carbohydrates; unoptimal diet structure was revealed — fats predominate from the daily energy value, carbohydrate and protein intake was low. There is a discrepancy between daily food intake (low consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread, fish) and the Order of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation dated October 30, 2015 No. 999 “On requirements approval for ensuring the sports reserves training for sports teams of the Russian Federation” requirements. Basic diet revealed a high average daily content of iron (19 ± 6 mg/day), vitamins A (1057 ± 729 µg ret. equiv) and C (153 ± 101 mg/day). Data on the frequency of taking SPPs and dietary supplements are provided. At the same time, content of some nutrients in them exceeded the upper permissible consumption levels. Conclusion: it is advisable to regularly increase the awareness of coaches and athletes about the rational nutrition principles through the introduction of educational programs into sports practice

The Tunka Experiment: Towards a 1-km^2 Cherenkov EAS Array in the Tunka Valley

The project of an EAS Cherenkov array in the Tunka valley/Siberia with an area of about 1 km^2 is presented. The new array will have a ten times bigger area than the existing Tunka-25 array and will permit a detailed study of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and the mass composition in the energy range from 10^15 to 10^18 eV.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, to be published in IJMP
