Jacob Duym en de Leidse rederijkers

Compared to other authors that played an important role during the early stages of Dutch renaissance drama, Jacob Duym received relatively little attention. In this article his life and work during his Leiden years (1586-1608) are discussed. It is argued that Duym initially was a member of the old chamber of rhetoric the Witte Acoleyen. In 1591, on request of the city government, he became the leader of the Flemish chamber d'Orainge Lelie; an unknown pamflet he wrote for this chamber is presented here. After some difficulties he left the Flemish chamber, this must have taken place between 1600 and 1606, and returned to the Witte Acoleyen. Probably he is the author of the winning play, performed by the Witte Acoleyen during the Haarlem rhethorician festivities in 1606

Het zakboekje van Piero: profiel van een rederijker

Samenvatting Pieter Cornelisz van der Mersch (ca. 1545-1629), alias Piero, was gedurende een halve eeuw actief als rederijker, niet alleen als zot van de Leidse kamer De Witte Acoleyen maar ook als serieus dichter. Dit artikel bevat enkele aanvullingen en correcties op de biografische schets die Pieter van Thiel van Piero gaf. Vervolgens concentreert het zich op enkele tekstverzamelingen die zijn aangelegd door Piero: een bundel met liederen en een klein, tot op heden nauwelijks bestudeerd zakboekje met ruim veertig refereinen en andere teksten. Dit materiaal levert nieuwe informatie op over het Hollandse rederijkersleven in de jaren 1600-1620. Het maakt het bovendien mogelijk Piero's politieke en religieuze opvattingen te reconstrueren. Piero ontwikkelt zich van een fanatiek voorstander van de oorlog tegen Spanje tot een advocaat voor de vrede tijdens het Twaalfjarig Bestand (1609-1621). Op religieus gebied belijdt hij een gematigd, Erasmiaans gekleurd protestantisme. Summary Pieter Cornelisz van der Mersch (ca. 1545-1629), also known as Piero, was active as a rhetorician (rederijker) for more than half a century, not only as the so called 'fool' of the Leiden chamber De Witte Acoleyen, but also as a serious poet. This article presents several corrections and additions on his biographical sketch as given by Pieter van Thiel. Then it focuses on two manuscripts by Piero, a collection of songs and a ¿ until now hardly noticed ¿ personal notebook, containing over forty refrains and other texts. Piero was not a very talented poet. His work nevertheless provides new information on the activities of the Dutch rhetoricians during the years 1600-1620. It also enables us to reconstruct Piero's political and religious thoughts. He converted from a supporter of the war against Spain into an advocate of peace during the Twelve Year Truce (1609-1621). As far as his religion is concerned, Piero was a protestant who supported the Erasmian ideal of tolerance
