    Over 65% sunlight absorption in a 1 mu m Si slab with hyperuniform texture

    Thin, flexible, and invisible solar cells will be a ubiquitous technology in the near future. Ultrathin crystalline silicon (c-Si) cells capitalize on the success of bulk silicon cells while being lightweight and mechanically flexible, but suffer from poor absorption and efficiency. Here we present a new family of surface texturing, based on correlated disordered hyperuniform patterns, capable of efficiently coupling the incident spectrum into the silicon slab optical modes. We experimentally demonstrate 66.5% solar light absorption in free-standing 1 Ī¼m c-Si layers by hyperuniform nanostructuring for the spectral range of 400 to 1050 nm. The absorption equivalent photocurrent derived from our measurements is 26.3 mA/cm2, which is far above the highest found in literature for Si of similar thickness. Considering state-of-the-art Si PV technologies, we estimate that the enhanced light trapping can result in a cell efficiency above 15%. The light absorption can potentially be increased up to 33.8 mA/cm2 by incorporating a back-reflector and improved antireflection, for which we estimate a photovoltaic efficiency above 21% for 1 Ī¼m thick Si cells

    Neuroevolutionary reinforcement learning for generalized control of simulated helicopters

    This article presents an extended case study in the application of neuroevolution to generalized simulated helicopter hovering, an important challenge problem for reinforcement learning. While neuroevolution is well suited to coping with the domainā€™s complex transition dynamics and high-dimensional state and action spaces, the need to explore efficiently and learn on-line poses unusual challenges. We propose and evaluate several methods for three increasingly challenging variations of the task, including the method that won first place in the 2008 Reinforcement Learning Competition. The results demonstrate that (1) neuroevolution can be effective for complex on-line reinforcement learning tasks such as generalized helicopter hovering, (2) neuroevolution excels at finding effective helicopter hovering policies but not at learning helicopter models, (3) due to the difficulty of learning reliable models, model-based approaches to helicopter hovering are feasible only when domain expertise is available to aid the design of a suitable model representation and (4) recent advances in efficient resampling can enable neuroevolution to tackle more aggressively generalized reinforcement learning tasks

    Helicopter hovering is an important challenge problem in the field of reinforcement learning. This paper considers several neuroevolutionary approaches to discovering robust controllers for a generalized version of the problem used in the 2008 Reinforcement Learning Competition, in which wind in the helicopter's environment varies from run to run. We present the simple model-free strategy that won first place in the competition and also describe several more complex model-based approaches. Our empirical results demonstrate that neuroevolution is effective at optimizing the weights of multi-layer perceptrons, that linear regression is faster and more effective than evolution for learning models, and that model-based approaches can outperform the simple model-free strategy, especially if prior knowledge is used to aid model learning
