A novel code for numerical 3-D MHD studies of CME expansion
A recent third-order, essentially non-oscillatory central scheme to advance the equations of single-fluid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in time has been implemented into a new numerical code. This code operates on a 3-D Cartesian, non-staggered grid, and is able to handle shock-like gradients without producing spurious oscillations. <br><br> To demonstrate the suitability of our code for the simulation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and similar heliospheric transients, we present selected results from test cases and perform studies of the solar wind expansion during phases of minimum solar activity. We can demonstrate convergence of the system into a stable Parker-like steady state for both hydrodynamic and MHD winds. The model is subsequently applied to expansion studies of CME-like plasma bubbles, and their evolution is monitored until a stationary state similar to the initial one is achieved. In spite of the model's (current) simplicity, we can confirm the CME's nearly self-similar evolution close to the Sun, thus highlighting the importance of detailed modelling especially at small heliospheric radii. <br><br> Additionally, alternative methods to implement boundary conditions at the coronal base, as well as strategies to ensure a solenoidal magnetic field, are discussed and evaluated
Impact of DM direct searches and the LHC analyses on branon phenomenology
Dark Matter direct detection experiments are able to exclude interesting
parameter space regions of particle models which predict an important amount of
thermal relics. We use recent data to constrain the branon model and to compute
the region that is favored by CDMS measurements. Within this work, we also
update present colliders constraints with new studies coming from the LHC.
Despite the present low luminosity, it is remarkable that for heavy branons,
CMS and ATLAS measurements are already more constraining than previous analyses
performed with TEVATRON and LEP data.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Considerations for an Ac Dipole for the LHC
Following successful experience at the BNL AGS, FNAL Tevatron, and CERN SPS,
an AC Dipole will be adopted at the LHC for rapid measurements of ring optics.
This paper describes some of the parameters of the AC dipole for the LHC,
scaling from performance of the FNAL and BNL devices.Comment: proceedings of the 2007 Particle Accelerator Conferenc
Spin-Waves in the Mid-Infrared Spectrum of Antiferromagnetic YBaCuO
The mid-infrared spin-wave spectrum of antiferromagnetic
YBaCuO\ was determined by infrared transmission and reflection
measurements (\bbox{k} \!\! \parallel c) at ~K.\@ Excitation of
single magnons of the optical branch was observed at
~meV.\@ Two further peaks at ~meV
() and ~meV
() both belong to the two-magnon spectrum. Linear
spin wave theory is in good agreement with the measured two-magnon spectrum,
and allows to determine the exchange constant to be about ~meV,
whereas the intrabilayer coupling is approximately .Comment: 3 figures in uuencoded for
Exploring high-end climate change scenarios for flood protection of the Netherlands
This international scientific assessment has been carried out at the request of the Dutch Delta Committee. The "Deltacommissie" requested that the assessment explore the high-end climate change scenarios for flood protection of the Netherlands. It is a state-of–the art scientific assessment of the upper bound values and longer term projections (for sea level rise up to 2200) of climate induced sea level rise, changing storm surge conditions and peak discharge of river Rhine. It comprises a review of recent studies, model projections and expert opinions of more than 20 leading climate scientists from different countries around the North Sea, Australia and the US
Two-dimensional electron liquid state at LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces
Using tunneling spectroscopy we have measured the spectral density of states
of the mobile, two-dimensional electron system generated at the LaAlO3-SrTiO3
interface. As shown by the density of states the interface electron system
differs qualitatively, first, from the electron systems of the materials
defining the interface and, second, from the two-dimensional electron gases
formed at interfaces between conventional semiconductors
Beam-Based Alignment of the NuMI Target Station Components at FNAL
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility is a conventional
horn-focused neutrino beam which produces muon neutrinos from a beam of mesons
directed into a long evacuated decay volume. The relative alignment of the
primary proton beam, target, and focusing horns affects the neutrino energy
spectrum delivered to experiments. This paper describes a check of the
alignment of these components using the proton beam.Comment: higher resolution figures available on Fermilab Preprint Server (see
