Preservation of panorama mesdag, the Haque

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the preservation of the Panorama Mesdag, a cylindrical painting, more than 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference. The vista of the sea, the dunes and Scheveningen village was painted by one of the most famous painters of the Hague School, Hendrik Willem Mesdag. It is the oldest 19th century panorama in the world in its original site and a unique cultural heritage. About three years ago the building, which is a uniquely complex structure, was damaged by a nearby excavation. In the years to follow a series of measures have been taken of which the compensation grouting of the foundation is the most extensive from a geotechnical point of view.\ud This paper outlines the history of the damage, the construction of the building and most importantly the extents of the compensation grouting and the result of the grouting and the extensive monitoring. The effectiveness of the grouting is determined and conclusions have been drawn for the still to be performed excavations and construction activities

The Impact of Media Attention on the Use of Alternative Earnings Measures

The practice of reporting earnings measures that deviate from generally accepted accounting principles (non-GAAP measures) has received negative attention in the media. Regulators argue in favour of reporting GAAP earnings measures and utter their concerns that investors may be misled by the use of non-GAAP measures. In a period of increased regulatory concern for these reporting practices, we explore whether there has been a shift away from the use of non-GAAP metrics. We analyse a sample of earnings press releases in the period 1999-2004 from companies listed at Euronext Amsterdam. Our findings indicate that reporting non-GAAP measures is a common practice and that the frequency of reporting non-GAAP earnings measures has increased despite the concerns voiced by regulators. On the other hand, investors seem to have become more hesitant towards the use of alternative earnings measures for their decision-making. Our findings suggest that investors find non-GAAP measures informative before 2003, but they turn away from these measures in the following years and price GAAP earnings metrics instead. Together, these findings suggest that the negative media attention for non-GAAP measures has influenced the perception of investors, but not of managers.Regulation;Event study;Non-GAAP earnings;Information content;Value relevance

Relativistic Mean Field in A≈A\approx80 nuclei and low energy proton reactions

Relativistic Mean Field calculations have been performed for a number of nuclei in mass A≈A\approx80 region. Ground state binding energy, charge radius and charge density values have been compared with experiment. Optical potential have been generated folding the nuclear density with the microscopic nuclear interaction DDM3Y. S-factors for low energy (p,γp,\gamma) and (p,np,n) reactions have been calculated and compared with experiment.Comment: To appear in Physical Review

Alpha-particle optical potential proofs at astrophysically relevant energies

(α,γ)(\alpha,\gamma) and (α(\alpha,n) reaction cross sections recently measured close to the reaction thresholds are rather well described by a previously developed regional optical potential. Thus, particular features of the α\alpha-particle optical potential at energies below the Coulomb barrier, besides parameters describing α\alpha-particle elastic scattering at higher energies are confirmed. Additional limitations of similar statistical model calculations for minor reaction channels are shown to be most likely due to an overlooked process or critical values of statistical model parameters around closed nuclear shells.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    r-Java 2.0: the nuclear physics

[Aims:] We present r-Java 2.0, a nucleosynthesis code for open use that performs r-process calculations as well as a suite of other analysis tools. [Methods:] Equipped with a straightforward graphical user interface, r-Java 2.0 is capable of; simulating nuclear statistical equilibrium (NSE), calculating r-process abundances for a wide range of input parameters and astrophysical environments, computing the mass fragmentation from neutron-induced fission as well as the study of individual nucleosynthesis processes. [Results:] In this paper we discuss enhancements made to this version of r-Java, paramount of which is the ability to solve the full reaction network. The sophisticated fission methodology incorporated into r-Java 2.0 which includes three fission channels (beta-delayed, neutron-induced and spontaneous fission) as well as computation of the mass fragmentation is compared to the upper limit on mass fission approximation. The effects of including beta-delayed neutron emission on r-process yield is studied. The role of coulomb interactions in NSE abundances is shown to be significant, supporting previous findings. A comparative analysis was undertaken during the development of r-Java 2.0 whereby we reproduced the results found in literature from three other r-process codes. This code is capable of simulating the physical environment of; the high-entropy wind around a proto-neutron star, the ejecta from a neutron star merger or the relativistic ejecta from a quark nova. As well the users of r-Java 2.0 are given the freedom to define a custom environment. This software provides an even platform for comparison of different proposed r-process sites and is available for download from the website of the Quark-Nova Project: http://quarknova.ucalgary.ca/Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures, 1 tabl

Improved Synthesis of C2-Symmetrical Pyridinediols and Synthesis of Cs-Symmetrical Pyridinediols

Base-induced reaction of 2,6-dimethylpyridine (2,6-lutidine) (1) with two equivalents of various ketones has been reported to provide C2-symmetrical pyridine diols 3. Closer examination reveals that competitive di-addition to a single methyl group can occur providing Cs-symmetrical pyridine diols 7. By varying the lithiation times, the formation of this side product could be maximized or minimized on the basis of a mechanistic proposal for the competing pathways. The formation of the Cs-diol 7 could be excluded completely by using potassium diisopropylamide as base; high yields of C2-symmetrical pyridine diols 3 are obtained. Regioselective additions of 1 to (R)-fenchone and (-)-menthone were also achieved.
