    Chain configurations in light nuclei

    Get PDF
The model of nuclear matter built from alpha-particles is proposed. The strong deformed shape for doubly even N=Z nuclides from carbon to magnesium has been determined according to this model. In this paper we undertake very simple approach, which assumes the existence of low lying chain configurations.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Artificial Immune System based on Hybrid and External Memory for Mathematical Function Optimization

    Get PDF
Artificial immune system (AIS) is one of the natureinspired algorithm for optimization problem. In AIS, clonal selection algorithm (CSA) is able to improve global searching ability. However, the CSA convergence and accuracy can be further improved because the hypermutation in CSA itself cannot always guarantee a better solution. Alternatively, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been used efficiently in solving complex optimization problems, but they have a tendency to converge prematurely. Thus, a hybrid PSO-AIS and a new external memory CSA based scheme called EMCSA are proposed. In hybrid PSO-AIS, the good features of PSO and AIS are combined in order to reduce any limitation. Alternatively, EMCSA captures all the best antibodies into the memory in order to enhance global searching capability. In this preliminary study, the results show that the performance of hybrid PSO-AIS compares favourably with other algorithms while EMCSA produced moderate results in most of the simulations

Artificial immune system (AIS) is one of the nature-inspired algorithm for solving optimization problems. In AIS, clonal selection algorithm (CSA) is able to improve global searching ability compare to other meta-heuristic methods. However, the CSA rate of convergence and accuracy can be further improved as the hypermutation in CSA itself cannot always guarantee a better solution. Conversely, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been used efficiently in solving complex optimization problems, but they have an inclination to converge prematurely. In this work, the CSA is modified using the best solutions for each exposure (iteration) namely Single Best Remainder (SBR) - CSA. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to enhance the performance of the conventional CSA in terms of accuracy and stability for single objective functions

    Noncommutative field gas driven inflation

We investigate early time inflationary scenarios in an Universe filled with a dilute noncommutative bosonic gas at high temperature. A noncommutative bosonic gas is a gas composed of bosonic scalar field with noncommutative field space on a commutative spacetime. Such noncommutative field theories was recently introduced as a generalization of quantum mechanics on a noncommutative spacetime. As key features of these theories are Lorentz invariance violation and CPT violation. In the present study we use a noncommutative bosonic field theory that besides the noncommutative parameter θ\theta shows up a further parameter σ\sigma. This parameter σ\sigma controls the range of the noncommutativity and acts as a regulator for the theory. Both parameters play a key role in the modified dispersion relations of the noncommutative bosonic field, leading to possible striking consequences for phenomenology. In this work we obtain an equation of state p=ω(σ,θ;β)ρp=\omega(\sigma,\theta;\beta)\rho for the noncommutative bosonic gas relating pressure pp and energy density ρ\rho, in the limit of high temperature. We analyse possible behaviours for this gas parameters σ\sigma, θ\theta and β\beta, so that 1ω<1/3-1\leq\omega<-1/3, which is the region where the Universe enters an accelerated phase.Comment: Reference added. Diabetes and other vascular risk factors in association with the risk of lower extremity amputation in chronic limb-threatening ischemia: a prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND: Patients with diabetes are at increased risk of developing chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) due to peripheral arterial disease, and this often results in lower extremity amputation (LEA). Little is known of the interaction between diabetes and other vascular risk factors in affecting the risk of CLTI. METHODS: We investigated the association of diabetes, and its interaction with hypertension, body mass index (BMI) and smoking, with the risk of LEA due to CLTI in the population-based Singapore Chinese Health Study. Participants were interviewed at recruitment (1993-1998) and 656 incident LEA cases were identified via linkage with nationwide hospital database through 2017. Multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for the associations. RESULTS: The HR (95% CI) for LEA risk was 13.41 (11.38-15.79) in participants with diabetes compared to their counterparts without diabetes, and the risk increased in a stepwise manner with duration of diabetes (P for trend < 0.0001). Hypertension and increased BMI independently increased LEA risk in those without diabetes but did not increase the risk in those with diabetes (P for interaction with diabetes ≤ 0.0006). Conversely, current smoking conferred a risk increment of about 40% regardless of diabetes status. CONCLUSIONS: Although diabetes conferred more than tenfold increase in risk of LEA, hypertension and increased BMI did not further increase LEA risk among those with diabetes, suggesting a common mechanistic pathway for these risk factors. In contrast, smoking may act via an alternative pathway and thus confer additional risk regardless of diabetes status

Glucose metabolism and oscillatory behavior of pancreatic islets

A variety of oscillations are observed in pancreatic islets. We establish a model, incorporating two oscillatory systems of different time scales: One is the well-known bursting model in pancreatic beta-cells and the other is the glucose-insulin feedback model which considers direct and indirect feedback of secreted insulin. These two are coupled to interact with each other in the combined model, and two basic assumptions are made on the basis of biological observations: The conductance g_{K(ATP)} for the ATP-dependent potassium current is a decreasing function of the glucose concentration whereas the insulin secretion rate is given by a function of the intracellular calcium concentration. Obtained via extensive numerical simulations are complex oscillations including clusters of bursts, slow and fast calcium oscillations, and so on. We also consider how the intracellular glucose concentration depends upon the extracellular glucose concentration, and examine the inhibitory effects of insulin.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figure

Mapping localized surface plasmons within silver nanocubes using cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging

    Get PDF
Localized surface plasmons within silver nanocubes less than 50 nm in size are investigated using high resolution cathodoluminescence hyperspectral imaging. Multivariate statistical analysis of the multidimensional luminescence dataset allows both the identification of distinct spectral features in the emission and the mapping of their spatial distribution. These results show a 490 nm peak emitted from the cube faces, with shorter wavelength luminescence coming from the vertices and edges; this provides direct experimental confirmation of theoretical predictions

    Hamiltonian submanifolds of regular polytopes

We investigate polyhedral 2k2k-manifolds as subcomplexes of the boundary complex of a regular polytope. We call such a subcomplex {\it kk-Hamiltonian} if it contains the full kk-skeleton of the polytope. Since the case of the cube is well known and since the case of a simplex was also previously studied (these are so-called {\it super-neighborly triangulations}) we focus on the case of the cross polytope and the sporadic regular 4-polytopes. By our results the existence of 1-Hamiltonian surfaces is now decided for all regular polytopes. Furthermore we investigate 2-Hamiltonian 4-manifolds in the dd-dimensional cross polytope. These are the "regular cases" satisfying equality in Sparla's inequality. In particular, we present a new example with 16 vertices which is highly symmetric with an automorphism group of order 128. Topologically it is homeomorphic to a connected sum of 7 copies of S2×S2S^2 \times S^2. By this example all regular cases of nn vertices with n<20n < 20 or, equivalently, all cases of regular dd-polytopes with d9d\leq 9 are now decided.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
