Chain configurations in light nuclei
The model of nuclear matter built from alpha-particles is proposed. The
strong deformed shape for doubly even N=Z nuclides from carbon to magnesium has
been determined according to this model. In this paper we undertake very simple
approach, which assumes the existence of low lying chain configurations.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Auditing scholarly journals published in Malaysia and assessing their visibility
The problem with the identification of Malaysian scholarly journals lies in
the lack of a current and complete listing of journals published in Malaysia.
As a result, librarians are deprived of a tool that can be used for journal
selection and identification of gaps in their serials collection. This study
describes the audit carried out on scholarly journals, with the objectives (a)
to trace and characterized scholarly journal titles published in Malaysia, and
(b) to determine their visibility in international and national indexing
databases. A total of 464 titles were traced and their yearly trends, publisher
and publishing characteristics, bibliometrics and indexation in national,
international and subject-based indexes were described
Noncommutative field gas driven inflation
We investigate early time inflationary scenarios in an Universe filled with a
dilute noncommutative bosonic gas at high temperature. A noncommutative bosonic
gas is a gas composed of bosonic scalar field with noncommutative field space
on a commutative spacetime. Such noncommutative field theories was recently
introduced as a generalization of quantum mechanics on a noncommutative
spacetime. As key features of these theories are Lorentz invariance violation
and CPT violation. In the present study we use a noncommutative bosonic field
theory that besides the noncommutative parameter shows up a further
parameter . This parameter controls the range of the
noncommutativity and acts as a regulator for the theory. Both parameters play a
key role in the modified dispersion relations of the noncommutative bosonic
field, leading to possible striking consequences for phenomenology. In this
work we obtain an equation of state for the
noncommutative bosonic gas relating pressure and energy density , in
the limit of high temperature. We analyse possible behaviours for this gas
parameters , and , so that , which
is the region where the Universe enters an accelerated phase.Comment: Reference added. Version to appear in Journal of Cosmology and

Toughening in electrospun fibrous scaffolds
Electrospun scaffolds mimic the microstructure of structural collagenous tissues and have been widely used in tissue engineering applications. Both brittle cracking and ductile failure have been observed in scaffolds with similarly random fibrous morphology. Finite element analysis can be used to qualitatively examine the mechanics of these differing failure mechanisms. The finite element modeling demonstrates that the noncontinuum deformation of the network structure results in fiber bundle formation and material toughening. Such toughening is accommodated by varying fiber properties, including allowing large failure strains and progressive damage of the fibers. The authors acknowledge the support from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Khaow

Surface Operators in N=2 Abelian Gauge Theory
We generalise the analysis in [arXiv:0904.1744] to superspace, and explicitly
prove that for any embedding of surface operators in a general, twisted N=2
pure abelian theory on an arbitrary four-manifold, the parameters transform
naturally under the SL(2,Z) duality of the theory. However, for
nontrivially-embedded surface operators, exact S-duality holds if and only if
the "quantum" parameter effectively vanishes, while the overall SL(2,Z) duality
holds up to a c-number at most, regardless. Nevertheless, this observation sets
the stage for a physical proof of a remarkable mathematical result by
Kronheimer and Mrowka--that expresses a "ramified" analog of the Donaldson
invariants solely in terms of the ordinary Donaldson invariants--which, will
appear, among other things, in forthcoming work. As a prelude to that, the
effective interaction on the corresponding u-plane will be computed. In
addition, the dependence on second Stiefel-Whitney classes and the appearance
of a Spin^c structure in the associated low-energy Seiberg-Witten theory with
surface operators, will also be demonstrated. In the process, we will stumble
upon an interesting phase factor that is otherwise absent in the "unramified"
case.Comment: 46 pages. Minor refinemen
Artificial Immune System based on Hybrid and External Memory for Mathematical Function Optimization
Artificial immune system (AIS) is one of the natureinspired
algorithm for optimization problem. In AIS, clonal
selection algorithm (CSA) is able to improve global searching ability. However, the CSA convergence and accuracy can be further improved because the hypermutation in CSA itself cannot always guarantee a better solution. Alternatively, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been used efficiently in solving complex optimization problems, but they have a tendency to converge prematurely. Thus, a hybrid PSO-AIS and a new external memory CSA based scheme called EMCSA are proposed. In hybrid PSO-AIS, the good features of PSO and AIS are combined in order to reduce any limitation. Alternatively, EMCSA captures all the best antibodies into the memory in order to enhance global searching capability. In this preliminary study, the results show that the performance
of hybrid PSO-AIS compares favourably with other algorithms
while EMCSA produced moderate results in most of the simulations
Artificial Immune System Based Remainder Method for Multimodal Mathematical Function Optimization
Artificial immune system (AIS) is one of the nature-inspired algorithm for solving optimization problems. In AIS, clonal selection algorithm (CSA) is able to improve global searching ability compare to other meta-heuristic methods. However, the CSA rate of convergence and accuracy can be further improved as the hypermutation in CSA itself cannot always guarantee a better solution. Conversely, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) have been used efficiently in solving complex optimization problems, but they have an inclination to converge prematurely. In this work, the CSA is modified using the best solutions for each exposure (iteration) namely Single Best Remainder (SBR) - CSA. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to enhance the performance of the conventional CSA in terms of accuracy and stability for single objective functions

The yersiniabactin-associated ATP binding cassette proteins YbtP and YbtQ enhance Escherichia coli fitness during high-titer cystitis
The Yersinia high-pathogenicity island (HPI) is common to multiple virulence strategies used by Escherichia coli strains associated with urinary tract infection (UTI). Among the genes in this island are ybtP and ybtQ, encoding distinctive ATP binding cassette (ABC) proteins associated with iron(III)-yersiniabactin import in Yersinia pestis. In this study, we compared the impact of ybtPQ on a model E. coli cystitis strain during in vitro culture and experimental murine infections. A ybtPQ-null mutant exhibited no growth defect under standard culture conditions, consistent with nonessentiality in this background. A growth defect phenotype was observed and genetically complemented in vitro during iron(III)-yersiniabactin-dependent growth. Following inoculation into the bladders of C3H/HEN and C3H/HeOuJ mice, this strain exhibited a profound, 10(6)-fold competitive infection defect in the subgroup of mice that progressed to high-titer bladder infections. These results identify a virulence role for YbtPQ in the highly inflammatory microenvironment characteristic of high-titer cystitis. The profound competitive defect may relate to the apparent selection of Yersinia HPI-positive E. coli in uncomplicated clinical UTIs
