Computer aided processing using laser measurements
The challenge exists of processing the STS and its cargo through KSC facilities in the most timely and cost effective manner possible. To do this a 3-D computer graphics data base was established into which was entered the STS, payloads, and KSC facilities. The facility drawing data are enhanced by laser theodolite measurements into an as-built configuration. Elements of the data base were combined to study orbiter/facility interfaces payload/facility access problems and design/arrangement of various GSE to support processing requirements. With timely analysis/design utilizing the 3-D computer graphics system, costly delays can be avoided. Better methodology can be analyzed to determine procedures for cost avoidance
A Renormalization Group for Hamiltonians: Numerical Results
We describe a renormalization group transformation that is related to the
breakup of golden invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of
freedom. This transformation applies to a large class of Hamiltonians, is
conceptually simple, and allows for accurate numerical computations. In a
numerical implementation, we find a nontrivial fixed point and determine the
corresponding critical index and scaling. Our computed values for various
universal constants are in good agreement with existing data for
area-preserving maps. We also discuss the flow associated with the nontrivial

Carleman estimates and absence of embedded eigenvalues
Let L be a Schroedinger operator with potential W in L^{(n+1)/2}. We prove
that there is no embedded eigenvalue. The main tool is an Lp Carleman type
estimate, which builds on delicate dispersive estimates established in a
previous paper. The arguments extend to variable coefficient operators with
long range potentials and with gradient potentials.Comment: 26 page
Direct Investigation of Superparamagnetism in Co Nanoparticle Films
A direct probe of superparamagnetism was used to determine the complete
anisotropy energy distribution of Co nanoparticle films. The films were
composed of self-assembled lattices of uniform Co nanoparticles 3 nm or 5 nm in
diameter, and a variable temperature scanning-SQUID microscope was used to
measure temperature-induced spontaneous magnetic noise in the samples. Accurate
measurements of anisotropy energy distributions of small volume samples will be
critical to magnetic optimization of nanoparticle devices and media.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Nonplanar integrability at two loops
In this article we compute the action of the two loop dilatation operator on
restricted Schur polynomials that belong to the su(2) sector, in the displaced
corners approximation. In this non-planar large N limit, operators that
diagonalize the one loop dilatation operator are not corrected at two loops.
The resulting spectrum of anomalous dimensions is related to a set of decoupled
harmonic oscillators, indicating integrability in this sector of the theory at
two loops. The anomalous dimensions are a non-trivial function of the 't Hooft
coupling, with a spectrum that is continuous and starting at zero at large N,
but discrete at finite N.Comment: version to appear in JHE
A double coset ansatz for integrability in AdS/CFT
We give a proof that the expected counting of strings attached to giant
graviton branes in AdS_5 x S^5, as constrained by the Gauss Law, matches the
dimension spanned by the expected dual operators in the gauge theory. The
counting of string-brane configurations is formulated as a graph counting
problem, which can be expressed as the number of points on a double coset
involving permutation groups. Fourier transformation on the double coset
suggests an ansatz for the diagonalization of the one-loop dilatation operator
in this sector of strings attached to giant graviton branes. The ansatz agrees
with and extends recent results which have found the dynamics of open string
excitations of giants to be given by harmonic oscillators. We prove that it
