Magnetic-Field-Induced Superconductivity in Eu_<0.8>Sn_<0.2>Mo_6S_<7-y>Se_y (Transport and Fermiology)
The electrical resistance of Eu_Sn_Mo_6S_Se_y (0≤y≤0.7) was measured under the magnetic fields up to 230 kOe. The hysteresis of the resistance was observed in the field range where the superconductive-normal-superconductive transitions appear. Analysis of the hysteresis provides a direct evidence that the magnetic-field-induced superconductivity of these compounds is caused by the Jaccarino-Peter compensation mechanism
Characterization of relationships between transcriptional units and operon structures in Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli
BACKGROUND: Operon structures play an important role in transcriptional regulation in prokaryotes. However, there have been fewer studies on complicated operon structures in which the transcriptional units vary with changing environmental conditions. Information about such complicated operons is helpful for predicting and analyzing operon structures, as well as understanding gene functions and transcriptional regulation. RESULTS: We systematically analyzed the experimentally verified transcriptional units (TUs) in Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli obtained from ODB and RegulonDB. To understand the relationships between TUs and operons, we defined a new classification system for adjacent gene pairs, divided into three groups according to the level of gene co-regulation: operon pairs (OP) belong to the same TU, sub-operon pairs (SOP) that are at the transcriptional boundaries within an operon, and non-operon pairs (NOP) belonging to different operons. Consequently, we found that the levels of gene co-regulation was correlated to intergenic distances and gene expression levels. Additional analysis revealed that they were also correlated to the levels of conservation across about 200 prokaryotic genomes. Most interestingly, we found that functional associations in SOPs were more observed in the environmental and genetic information processes. CONCLUSION: Complicated operon strucutures were correlated with genome organization and gene expression profiles. Such intricately regulated operons allow functional differences depending on environmental conditions. These regulatory mechanisms are helpful in accommodating the variety of changes that happen around the cell. In addition, such differences may play an important role in the evolution of gene order across genomes
Effect of Cisternal Administration of Nicardipine Hydrochloride on Cerebral Vasospasm: A Preliminary Report
In six subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) cases due to aneurysmal rupture, effects of cisternal administration of Nicardipine hydrochloride (nicardipine) on vasospasm wer studied. Nicardipine is one of calcium antagonists. All aneurysms were clipped within 48 hr after the onset of SAH with ventricular and cisternal drainages. Subarachnoid clot was removed as much as possible. Nicardipine or mixture of nicardipine and urokinase was administered through cisternal drainage once a day for 10 days postoperatively. The dose of nicardipine was 2 mg or 4 mg, and that of urokinase was 6,000 units or 24,000 units. On the 7th day after the onset of SAH, angiograms were performed before and 30 min after the cisternal administration of nicardipine. Then the diameters of each arteries were compared in order to estimate the vasodilative effects of nicardipine angiographically. In this study nicardipine was considered to have some prophylactic effect on vasospasm because vasospasm was not observed either angiographically or clinically in 2 out of 3 severe SAH cases on CT
Chronic Subdural Hematoma Associated with External Decompression for Acute Traumatic Intracranial Hematoma: report of two cases
A report is presented on two cases of chronic subdural hematoma which occurred after craniotomy, removal of the hematoma and external decompression for traumatic intracranial hematoma. As for the pathogenesis of chronic subdural hematoma of these two cases, these chronic subdural hematomas were considered to have originated from the subdural collection of mixed fluid of cerebrospinal fluid and blood caused by tearing of the arachnoid on head injury or craniotomy in the space between the brain and dural plasty. Opening and irrigating the hematoma cavity proved adequate as treatment at cranioplasty
Magnetic field effect on Fe-induced short-range magnetic correlation and electrical conductivity in BiPbSrCuFeO
We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies
under magnetic fields of
BiPbSrCuFeO, in which hole
carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic
correlation with incommensurability , whereas a Fe-free compound
shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature
in the form of and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction
of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive
effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation.
Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate
magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two
different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic
alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. The latter picture appears to be more
