    Characteristics of high efficiency current charging system for HTS magnet with solar energy

    AbstractIn terms of electrical energy, the technical fusion with solar energy system is promisingly applied in order to improve the efficiency in the power applications, since the solar energy system can convert an eternal electric energy in all-year-around. As one of such power applications, we proposed a current charging system for HTS magnet combined with solar energy (CHS). As this system can operate without external utility power to charge the HTS load magnet due to the solar energy, the operating efficiency is practically improved. The power converter, which is interfaced with solar energy and HTS magnet systems, plays an important role to transfer the stable electric energy and thus, the stabilized performance of the converter with solar energy system is one of essential factors. In this study, we investigated various charging performances under different operating conditions of the converter.     Innovative Modeling Approach for Li-Ion Battery Packs Considering Intrinsic Cell Unbalances and Packaging Elements

    In this paper, an innovative modeling approach for Li-ion battery packs is proposed by considering intrinsic cell unbalances and packaging elements. The proposed modeling method shows that the accurate battery pack model can be achieved if the overall influences of intrinsic cell unbalances and packaging elements are taken account. Concurrently, the proposed method takes a practical model structure, resulting in the reduction of computational burden in a battery management system. Furthermore, because the proposed method utilizes cell information without a manufactured battery pack, it can be helpful to design optimal battery packs. The proposed method is verified through simulation and experimental results of the Li-ion battery pack along with the battery cycler. In three test profiles, the mean absolute percentage errors and root mean square errors of the proposed pack model do not exceed 0.5% and 0.07 V, respectively

    Measurement of Magnetic Field Properties of a 3.0 T/m Air-core HTS Quadrupole Magnet and Optimal Shape Design to Increase the Critical Current Reduced by the Incident Magnetic Field

    Air-core high-temperature superconducting quadrupole magnets (AHQMs) differ from conventional iron-core quadrupole magnets, in that their iron cores are removed, and instead high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) are applied. The high operating temperature and high thermal stability of HTS magnets can improve their thermodynamic cooling efficiency. Thus, HTS magnets are more suitable than low temperature superconducting magnets for withstanding radiation and high heat loads in the hot cells of accelerators. AHQMs are advantageous because they are compact, light, and free from the hysteresis of ferromagnetic materials, due to the removal of the iron-core. To verify the feasibility of the use of AHQMs, we designed and fabricated a 3.0 T/m AHQM. The magnetic field properties of the fabricated AHQM were evaluated. Additionally, the characteristics of the air-core model and iron-core model of 9.0 T/m were compared in the scale for practical operation. In comparison with the iron-core model, AHQM significantly reduces the critical current (I[subscript C]) due to the strong magnetic field inside the coil. In this study, a method for the accurate calculation of I[subscript C] is introduced, and the calculated results are compared with measured results. Furthermore, the optimal shape design of the AHQM to increase the critical current is introduced.
