With a rebel yell: Video gamers’ responses to mass shooting moral panics
When a moral panic happens, society believes that a group of people and/or their behaviour is responsible for a threat to society – without any evidentiary basis. How does the target group respond? In the video game context, gamers may fear that their pastime will be blamed for mass shootings leading to social stigma. Group members so threatened are hypothesized to react to protect their group identity. This leads to increased engagement in the activity under threat. In contrast, disasters that do not threaten the group would not affect the amount of video game play. We test these hypotheses by relating the amount of game play to incidents of mass shootings and non-shooting disasters for a large sample of individuals (N = 170,000). Incidents of mass shootings that threaten the gamer community lead to increases in game playing while incidents of other disasters unrelated to gaming divert time away from gaming
The studies results of the impact of the application time and intensive water washing on structure аnd properties of tripolyphosphate coatings chemically deposited on steel are given. The graphical dependencies of physical characteristics and chemical properties of coats with matrix structure, washed with water from the application time are built. It is found the specific gravity of the matrix (ferrum (III) tripolyphosphate) and the number of gel-like layer TPР Na increase also matrix defectiveness and filler amount that are contained in the matrix as TPP Na crystals, decreases when ap-
plication time increases in the 1-10 minutes interval. This is followed by overall increasing of the specific gravity, porosity decreasing and facilitates increasing of the protective ability and corrosion resistance of the coating under atmospheric corrosion
Channeling 5-min photospheric oscillations into the solar outer atmosphere through small-scale vertical magnetic flux tubes
We report two-dimensional MHD simulations which demonstrate that photospheric
5-min oscillations can leak into the chromosphere inside small-scale vertical
magnetic flux tubes. The results of our numerical experiments are compatible
with those inferred from simultaneous spectropolarimetric observations of the
photosphere and chromosphere obtained with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter
(TIP) at 10830 A. We conclude that the efficiency of energy exchange by
radiation in the solar photosphere can lead to a significant reduction of the
cut-off frequency and may allow for the propagation of the 5 minutes waves
vertically into the chromosphere.Comment: accepted by ApJ
Trolleys, Triage and Covid-19: The Role of Psychological Realism in Sacrificial Dilemmas
At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, frontline medical professionals at intensive care units around the world faced gruesome decisions about how to ration life-saving medical resources. These events provided a unique lens through which to understand how the public reasons about real-world dilemmas involving trade-offs between human lives. In three studies (total N = 2298), we examined people’s moral attitudes toward triage of acute coronavirus patients, and found elevated support for utilitarian triage policies. These utilitarian tendencies did not stem from period change in moral attitudes relative to pre-pandemic levels--but rather, from the heightened realism of triage dilemmas. Participants favored utilitarian resolutions of critical care dilemmas when compared to structurally analogous, non-medical dilemmas—and such support was rooted in prosocial dispositions, including empathy and impartial beneficence. Finally, despite abundant evidence of political polarization surrounding Covid-19, moral views about critical care triage differed modestly, if at all, between liberals and conservatives. Taken together, our findings highlight people’s robust support for utilitarian measures in the face of a global public health threat, and illustrate how hypothetical scenarios in moral psychology (e.g. trolley cases) should strive for more experiential and psychological realism, otherwise their results might not generalize to real-world moral dilemmas

Magnetic properties of photospheric regions having very low magnetic flux
The magnetic properties of the quiet Sun are investigated using a novel
inversion code, FATIMA, based on the Principal Component Analysis of the
observed Stokes profiles. The stability and relatively low noise sensitivity of
this inversion procedure allows for the systematic inversion of large data sets
with very weak polarization signal. Its application to quiet Sun observations
of network and internetwork regions reveals that a significant fraction of the
quiet Sun contains kilogauss fields (usually with very small filling factors)
and confirms that the pixels with weak polarization account for most of the
magnetic flux. Mixed polarities in the resolution element are also found to
occur more likely as the polarization weakens.Comment: To apapear in ApJ. 39 pages, 12 figures (2 of them are color figures
Morphology and Dynamics of the Low Solar Chromosphere
The Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) installed at the Dunn
Solar Telescope of the NSO/SP is used to investigate the morphology and
dynamics of the lower chromosphere and the virtually non-magnetic fluctosphere
below. The study addresses in particular the structure of magnetic elements
that extend into these layers. We choose different quiet Sun regions in and
outside coronal holes. In inter-network regions with no significant magnetic
flux contributions above the detection limit of IBIS, we find intensity
structures with the characteristics of a shock wave pattern. The magnetic flux
elements in the network are long lived and seem to resemble the spatially
extended counterparts to the underlying photospheric magnetic elements. We
suggest a modification to common methods to derive the line-of-sight magnetic
field strength and explain some of the difficulties in deriving the magnetic
field vector from observations of the fluctosphere.Comment: accepted by ApJ, 16 pages, 8 figure
Quiet Sun magnetic fields from simultaneous inversions of visible and infrared spectropolarimetric observations
We study the quiet Sun magnetic fields using spectropolarimetric observations
of the infrared and visible Fe I lines at 6301.5, 6302.5, 15648 and 15653 A.
Magnetic field strengths and filling factors are inferred by the simultaneous
fit of the observed Stokes profiles under the MISMA hypothesis. The
observations cover an intra-network region at the solar disk center. We analyze
2280 Stokes profiles whose polarization signals are above noise in the two
spectral ranges, which correspond to 40% of the field of view. Most of these
profiles can be reproduced only with a model atmosphere including 3 magnetic
components with very different field strengths, which indicates the
co-existence of kG and sub-kG fields in our 1.5" resolution elements. We
measure an unsigned magnetic flux density of 9.6 G considering the full field
of view. Half of the pixels present magnetic fields with mixed polarities in
the resolution element. The fraction of mixed polarities increases as the
polarization weakens. We compute the probability density function of finding
each magnetic field strength. It has a significant contribution of kG field
strengths, which concentrates most of the observed magnetic flux and energy.
This kG contribution has a preferred magnetic polarity, while the polarity of
the weak fields is balanced.Comment: 16 pages and 14 figure
