A Literary Hindu-Christian Dialogue A Century Ago: Still Actual?
Re-reading Alkondavilli Govindacarya The Divine Wisdom of the Dravida Saints Madras: C.N. Press, 1902, XXIII + 216 pages.
A preliminary note: This is not a \u27book review\u27 as this is usually understood; it would make little sense to write on after over a century of the first publication of the work. It is an invitation to re-discover a reputable Hindu scholar who was eager to find in Christianity parallels to his own faith-tradition. His very choice of topics is intriguing. The range of Christian literature referred to and quoted from is amazing; I believe it is without parallel. The fact that the book was reprinted a century later and is still highly regarded by contemporary Srivaisnavas says something, too. This brief report is meant to encourage Christian scholars interested in Hindu-Christian dialogue to look into the work in order to see what spiritually-minded Hindus find attractive about Christianity
Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue
As an enthusiastic practitioner of Hindu-Christian dialogue in India in the sixties, I noted how frequently my Hindu dialogue partners resorted to modern science to make their points. They either drew parallels between ideas held by classical Indian authors and modern scientific findings, or they claimed Vedic origins for contemporary scientific or technical developments. More often than not they would perceive complete harmony between Vedanta and twentieth-century Western science, detailing how contemporary physics was supporting Advaita Vedanta or how Darwin\u27s theory of evolution had been anticipated by Samkhya. Having had a lifelong interest in the sciences I found this turn of dialogue attractive. While in India, I was also introduced to Carl Friedrich von Weizsacker, the well-known physicist-philosopher, who, while visiting development projects on behalf of the German Government, was eager to learn more about India\u27s religions and cultures. We quickly became good friends and he invited me several times to spend part of my summer at his Max-Planck Institute in Starnberg where we were able to engage in lengthy fruitful conversations
Vidyaranya Swami\u27s paƱca viveka and Thomas Aquinas\u27 quinque viae in the Light of Today\u27s Science
In the context of recent attempts to shore up atheism with philosophical and scientific arguments the construction of rational proofs for the existence of God is receiving renewed attention. Over against the assertion of some scientists that religious belief is both unscientific and irrational, philosophers and theologians argue that the study of nature itself offers a great deal of evidence for the existence of a Creator. They are supported by numerous reputable scientists, the authors of book titles like The Language of God or The Mind of God and many others. it is noteworthy that Google has over two million entries under the term \u27proofs of god.\u27 Its extremely long Wikipedia article ranges widely and includes Christian and Hindu proofs of the existence of God as well as traditional and contemporary arguments against it
