Dashboard indicators for the Northeast Ohio economy: prepared for the Fund for Our Economic Future

The Fund for Our Economic Future (The Fund) is a multiyear collaborative effort “to encourage and advance a common and highly focused regional economic development agenda that can lead to a long-term economic transformation of the Northeast Ohio (NEO) economy.” One of the strategies pursued by the Fund is to create and regularly update Dashboard Indicators for the Northeast Ohio Regional Economy. The Dashboard is intended to provide a framework for understanding the regional economic process and to track the region’s economic progress. This report presents the methodology used to construct and design the dashboard. Sharp conditions for exponential and non-exponential uniform stabilization of the time dependent damped wave equation

It is classical that uniform stabilization of solutions to the damped wave equation is equivalent to the geometric control condition The author previously showed that, when the damping depends on time, a generalization of the geometric control condition implies uniform stabilization at an exponential rate. In this paper, it is shown that this generalization of the geometric control condition is necessary for uniform stabilization at an exponential rate. Furthermore, when the damping does not satisfy this generalization, and has some additional structure, upper and lower bounds on non-exponential uniform stabilization are computed. The qualitative behavior of these upper and lower bounds coincide.Comment: 31 page

Energy decay for the time dependent damped wave equation

Energy decay is established for the damped wave equation on compact Riemannian manifolds where the damping coefficient is allowed to depend on time. Using a time dependent observability inequality, it is shown that the energy of solutions decays at an exponential rate if the damping coefficient satisfies a time dependent analogue of the classical geometric control condition. Existing time dependent observability inequalities are improved by removing technical assumptions on the permitted initial data.Comment: 18 pages. Der Autor stellt einige eher methodologische und wissenschaftsoziologische Überlegungen an, die von der aktuellen Aufmerksamkeit für die Arbeitsmarktentwicklung in der öffentlichen Debatte angesichts des Wiederanstiegs der Arbeitslosigkeit ausgehen. "Es geht dabei zugespitzt um die Schwierigkeit von Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit, das Arbeitslosigkeitsproblem zu erfassen und einzuordnen sowie um Überlegungen zu der Frage, ob 'Arbeitslosigkeit' denn nun das immer erklärte Schlüssel- oder doch eher ein Scheinproblem für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland sei."
