Berry phase from a quantum Zeno effect
We exhibit a specific implementation of the creation of geometrical phase
through the state-space evolution generated by the dynamic quantum Zeno effect.
That is, a system is guided through a closed loop in Hilbert space by means a
sequence of closely spaced projections leading to a phase difference with
respect to the original state. Our goal is the proposal of a specific
experimental setup in which this phase could be created and observed. To this
end we study the case of neutron spin, examine the practical aspects of
realizing the "projections," and estimate the difference between the idealized

A Bayesian Approach to Calibrating Period-Luminosity Relations of RR Lyrae Stars in the Mid-Infrared
A Bayesian approach to calibrating period-luminosity (PL) relations has
substantial benefits over generic least-squares fits. In particular, the
Bayesian approach takes into account the full prior distribution of the model
parameters, such as the a priori distances, and refits these parameters as part
of the process of settling on the most highly-constrained final fit.
Additionally, the Bayesian approach can naturally ingest data from multiple
wavebands and simultaneously fit the parameters of PL relations for each
waveband in a procedure that constrains the parameter posterior distributions
so as to minimize the scatter of the final fits appropriately in all wavebands.
Here we describe the generalized approach to Bayesian model fitting and then
specialize to a detailed description of applying Bayesian linear model fitting
to the mid-infrared PL relations of RR Lyrae variable stars. For this example
application we quantify the improvement afforded by using a Bayesian model fit.
We also compare distances previously predicted in our example application to
recently published parallax distances measured with the Hubble Space Telescope
and find their agreement to be a vindication of our methodology. Our intent
with this article is to spread awareness of the benefits and applicability of
this Bayesian approach and encourage future PL relation investigations to

Bulk Scale Factor at Very Early Universe
In this paper we propose a higher dimensional Cosmology based on FRW model
and brane-world scenario. We consider the warp factor in the brane-world
scenario as a scale factor in 5-dimensional generalized FRW metric, which is
called as bulk scale factor, and obtain the evolution of it with space-like and
time-like extra dimensions. It is then showed that, additional space-like
dimensions can produce exponentially bulk scale factor under repulsive strong

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in pregnancy: does foetal viability matter?
With the increasing use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for adults with acute hypoxic respiratory failure, the indications for its use have expanded. We wanted to share the results of a recent case from our institution, of a woman who experienced respiratory failure secondary to hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). HG is a rare complication of pregnancy (0.3% to 2.0% of pregnancies), resulting in uncontrolled or excessive nausea and vomiting with dehydration and weight loss, typically in the first to mid second trimester, and is a diagnosis of exclusion
Topological phase due to electric dipole moment and magnetic monopole interaction
We show that there is an anologous Aharonov-Casher effect on a neutral
particle with electric dipole moment interacting with a magnetic filed produced

Core Structure of Global Vortices in Brane World Models
We study analytically and numerically the core structure of global vortices
forming on topologically deformed brane-worlds with a single toroidally compact
extra dimension. It is shown that for an extra dimension size larger than the
scale of symmetry breaking the magnitude of the complex scalar field at the
vortex center can dynamically remain non-zero. Singlevaluedness and regularity
are not violated. Instead, the winding escapes to the extra dimension at the
vortex center. As the extra dimension size decreases the field magnitude at the
core dynamically decreases also and in the limit of zero extra dimension size
we reobtain the familiar global vortex solution. Extensions to other types of
defects and gauged symmetries are also discussed.Comment: 6 two column pages, 3 figure
Classical Stabilization of Homogeneous Extra Dimensions
If spacetime possesses extra dimensions of size and curvature radii much
larger than the Planck or string scales, the dynamics of these extra dimensions
should be governed by classical general relativity. We argue that in general
relativity, it is highly nontrivial to obtain solutions where the extra
dimensions are static and are dynamically stable to small perturbations. We
also illustrate that intuition on equilibrium and stability built up from
non-gravitational physics can be highly misleading. For all static, homogeneous
solutions satisfying the null energy condition, we show that the Ricci
curvature of space must be nonnegative in all directions. Much of our analysis
focuses on a class of spacetime models where space consists of a product of
homogeneous and isotropic geometries. A dimensional reduction of these models
is performed, and their stability to perturbations that preserve the spatial
symmetries is analyzed. We conclude that the only physically realistic examples
of classically stabilized large extra dimensions are those in which the

Coupling between planes and chains in YBa2Cu3O7 : a possible solution for the order parameter controversy
We propose to explain the contradictory experimental evidence about the
symmetry of the order parameter in by taking into account
the coupling between planes and chains. This leads to an anticrossing of the
plane and chain band. We include an attractive pairing interaction within the
planes and a repulsive one between planes and chains, leading to opposite signs
for the order parameter on planes and chains, and to nodes of the gap because
of the anticrossing. Our model blends s-wave and d-wave features, and provides

Higher Dimensional Cosmology with Some Dark Energy Models in Emergent, Logamediate and Intermediate Scenarios of the Universe
We have considered N-dimensional Einstein field equations in which
four-dimensional space-time is described by a FRW metric and that of extra
dimensions by an Euclidean metric. We have chosen the exponential forms of
scale factors a and d numbers of b in such a way that there is no singularity
for evolution of the higher dimensional Universe. We have supposed that the
Universe is filled with K-essence, Tachyonic, Normal Scalar Field and
DBI-essence. Here we have found the nature of potential of different scalar
field and graphically analyzed the potentials and the fields for three scenario
namely Emergent Scenario, Logamediate Scenario and Intermediate Scenario. Also
graphically we have depicted the geometrical parameters named statefinder
parameters and slow-roll parameters in the higher dimensional cosmology with

Estrogen receptor polymorphism predicts the onset of natural and surgical menopause
Age at menopause and risk of hysterectomy have strong genetic components,
but the genes involved remain ill defined. We investigated whether genetic
variation at the estrogen receptor (ER) gene contributes to the
variability in the onset of menopause in 900 postmenopausal women, aged
55-80 yr, of the Rotterdam Study, a population-based cohort study in The
Netherlands. Gynecological information was obtained, and if women reported
surgical menopause, validation of type and indication of surgery was
accomplished by checking medical records. The ER genotypes (PP, Pp, and
pp) were assessed by PCR using the PvuII endonuclease. Compared with women
carrying the pp genotype, homozygous PP women had a 1.1-yr (P < 0.02)
earlier onset of menopause. Furthermore, an allele dose effect was
observed, corresponding to a 0.5-yr (P < 0.02) earlier onset of menopause
per copy of the P allele. The risk of surgical menopause was 2.4 (95%
confidence interval, 1.5-3.8) times higher for women carrying the PP
genotype compared to those in the pp group, with the most prominent effect
in women who underwent hysterectomy due to fibroids or menorrhagia. We
conclude that genetic variations of the ER gene are related to the onset
of natural menopause and the risk of surgical menopause, especially
hysterectomy
