    Star-graph expansions for bond-diluted Potts models

    We derive high-temperature series expansions for the free energy and the susceptibility of random-bond qq-state Potts models on hypercubic lattices using a star-graph expansion technique. This method enables the exact calculation of quenched disorder averages for arbitrary uncorrelated coupling distributions. Moreover, we can keep the disorder strength pp as well as the dimension dd as symbolic parameters. By applying several series analysis techniques to the new series expansions, one can scan large regions of the (p,d)(p,d) parameter space for any value of qq. For the bond-diluted 4-state Potts model in three dimensions, which exhibits a rather strong first-order phase transition in the undiluted case, we present results for the transition temperature and the effective critical exponent γ\gamma as a function of pp as obtained from the analysis of susceptibility series up to order 18. A comparison with recent Monte Carlo data (Chatelain {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. E64, 036120(2001)) shows signals for the softening to a second-order transition at finite disorder strength.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    THE EXPRESSION OF H-2K, H-2D AND Ia ANTIGENS IN VARIOUS TISSUES AS ASSESSED IN Fc RECEPTOR INHIBITION SYSTEMS

    The ability of mouse alloantibody to inhibit EA rosette formation and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) was used to study the expression of H-2K, Ia and H-2D antigens in various tissues. As previously reported antisera against each of these groups of antigens inhibited B lymphocyte EA rosette formation. Continuing studies confirmed these observations but established that quantitative differences may exist in the ease with which antibody against antigens in each region can inhibit EA rosettes: anti H-2D and anti-Ia seemed stronger relative to their cytotoxic titres than anti H-2K. Possible reasons for this are discussed. When rosette forming cells from other tissues were studied, (bone marrow cells, peritoneal macrophages and tumour cells), they were inhibited by anti H-2K and anti H-2D sera but not by anti Ia sera, presumably reflecting the restricted distribution of Ia antigens in those tissues. Inhibition of ADCC by various antisera reflected qualitatively and quantitatively the expression of H-2 antigens in various tissues: whereas effector cell activity in spleen, bone marrow, or peritoneal cell populations was inhibited by anti H-2 or anti-Ia sera, the amount of inhibition observed with anti-Ia was much less when the tissue expressed little Ia antigen (bone marrow) than when it expressed abundant Ia antigen (spleen). The ability of cytotoxicity inhibition to detect antibody coated cells was used to assess the relative amount of Ia antigen on thymus and on lymph node cells, showing significant amounts of Ia antigen on thymus cells.     Transition Spectra for a BCS Superconductor with Multiple Gaps: Model Calculations for MgB_2

    We analyze the qualitative features in the transition spectra of a model superconductor with multiple energy gaps, using a simple extension of the Mattis-Bardeen expression for probes with case I and case II coherence factors. At temperature T = 0, the far infrared absorption edge is, as expected, determined by the smallest gap. However, the large thermal background may mask this edge at finite temperatures and instead the secondary absorption edges found at Delta_i+Delta_j may become most prominent. At finite T, if certain interband matrix elements are large, there may also be absorption peaks at the gap difference frequencies | Delta_i-Delta_j | . We discuss the effect of sample quality on the measured spectra and the possible relation of these predictions to the recent infrared absorption measurement on MgB_2

    Spin instabilities and quantum phase transitions in integral and fractional quantum Hall states

    The inter-Landau-level spin excitations of quantum Hall states at filling factors nu=2 and 4/3 are investigated by exact numerical diagonalization for the situation in which the cyclotron (hbar*omega_c) and Zeeman (E_Z) splittings are comparable. The relevant quasiparticles and their interactions are studied, including stable spin wave and skyrmion bound states. For nu=2, a spin instability at a finite value of epsilon=hbar*omega_c-E_Z leads to an abrupt paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, in agreement with the mean-field approximation. However, for nu=4/3 a new and unexpected quantum phase transition is found which involves a gradual change from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic occupancy of the partially filled Landau level as epsilon is decreased.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.Let

    Explosion-generated infrasound recorded on ground and airborne microbarometers at regional distances

    Recent work in deploying infrasound (low-frequency sound) sensors on aerostats and free-flying balloons has shown them to be viable alternatives to ground stations. However, no study to date has compared the performance of surface and freefloating infrasound microbarometers with respect to acoustic events at regional (100s of kilometers) range. The prospect of enhanced detection of aerial explosions at similar ranges, such as those from bolides, has not been investigated either. We examined infrasound signals from three 1-ton trinitrotoluene (TNT) equivalent chemical explosions using microbarometers on two separate balloons at 280- to 400-km ranges and ground stations at 6.3- to 350-km ranges. Signal celerities were consistent with acoustic waves traveling in the stratospheric duct. However, significant differences were noted between the observed arrival patterns and those predicted by an acoustic propagation model. Very low-background noise levels on the balloons were consistent with previous studies that suggest wind interference is minimal on freely drifting sensors. Simulated propagation patterns and observed noise levels also confirm that balloon-borne microbarometers should be very effective at detecting explosions in the middle and upper atmosphere as well as those on the surface

    Investigation of the ferromagnetic transition in the correlated 4d perovskites SrRu1x_{1-x}Rhx_xO3_3

    The solid-solution SrRu1x_{1-x}Rhx_xO3_3 (0x10\le x \le1) is a variable-electron-configuration system forming in the nearly-cubic-perovskite basis, ranging from the ferromagnetic 4d4d^4 to the enhanced paramagnetic 4d5d^5. Polycrystalline single-phase samples were obtained over the whole composition range by a high-pressure-heating technique, followed by measurements of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, thermopower, and electrical resistivity. The ferromagnetic order in long range is gradually suppressed by the Rh substitution and vanishes at x0.6x \sim 0.6. The electronic term of specific-heat shows unusual behavior near the critical Rh concentration; the feature does not match even qualitatively with what was reported for the related perovskites (Sr,Ca)RuO3_3. Furthermore, another anomaly in the specific heat was observed at x0.9x \sim 0.9.Comment: Accepted for publication in PR

    Effects of C, Cu and Be substitutions in superconducting MgB2

    Density functional calculations are used to investigate the effects of partial substitutional alloying of the B site in MgB2 with C and Be alone and combined with alloying of the Mg site with Cu. The effect of such substitutions on the electronic structure, electron phonon coupling and superconductivity are discussed. We find that Be substitution for B is unfavorable for superconductivity as it leads to a softer lattice and weaker electron-phonon couplings. Replacement of Mg by Cu leads to an increase in the stiffness and doping level at the same time, while the carrier concentration can be controlled by partial replacement of B by C. We estimate that with full replacement of Mg by Cu and fractional substitution of B by C, Tc values of 50K may be attainable.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Tomonaga-Luttinger features in the resonant Raman spectra of quantum wires

    The differential cross section for resonant Raman scattering from the collective modes in a one dimensional system of interacting electrons is calculated non-perturbatively using the bosonization method.
