Professional Organizations and Healthcare Industry Support: Ethical Conflict?
A good deal of attention has been recently focused on the presumed advertising excesses of the healthcare industry in its promotion techniques to healthcare professionals, whether through offering gratuities such as gifts, honoraria, or travel support2-6 or through deception. Two basic concerns have been expressed: Does the acceptance of gratuities bias the recipient, tainting his or her responsibilities as the patient's agent? Does acceptance of the gratuity by the healthcare professional contribute to the high cost of healthcare products? The California Society of Hospital Pharmacists was recently asked by its members to formulate a policy for an appropriate relationship between the Society and the healthcare industry, addressing these concerns. Toxicity of AMPA to the earthworm Eisenia andrei Bouché, 1972 in tropical artificial soil
Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) - one of glyphosate's main metabolites - has been classified as persistent in soils, raising concern regarding the widespread use of glyphosate in agriculture and forestry. Glyphosate may have negative or neutral effects on soil biota, but no information is available on the toxicity of AMPA to soil invertebrates. Therefore our aim was to study the effect of AMPA on mortality and reproduction of the earthworm species Eisenia andrei using standard soil ecotoxicological methods (ISO). Field-relevant concentrations of AMPA had no significant effects on mortality in acute or chronic assays. Except at the highest concentration tested, a significant biomass loss was observed compared to controls in the chronic assay. The number of juveniles and cocoons increased with higher concentrations of AMPA applied, but their mean weights decreased. This mass loss indicates higher sensitivity of juveniles than adults to AMPA. Our results suggest that earthworms coming from parents grown in contaminated soils may have reduced growth, limiting their beneficial roles in key soil ecosystem functions. Two techniques for the preparation of cell-scaffold constructs suitable for sinus augmentation: steps into clinical application.
The objective of this clinical trial was the analysis of 2 methods for engineering of autologous bone grafts for maxillary sinus augmentation with secondary implant placement. Group 1 (8 patients, 12 sinuses): cells of mandibular periosteum were cultured in a good manufacturing practice laboratory (2 weeks) with autologous serum and then transferred onto a collagen matrix. After another week, these composites were transplanted into the sinuses. In group 2A (2 patients, 3 sinuses), cells of maxillary bone were cultivated with autologous serum for 2 weeks, seeded onto natural bone mineral (NBM, diameter [Ă] = 8 mm) blocks, and cultivated for another 1.5 months. These composites were transplanted into the sinuses. Group 2B (control, 3 patients, 5 sinuses) received NBM blocks alone. In the course of implant placement 6 (group 1) and 8 (group 2) months later, core biopsy were taken. Clinical follow-up period was 1 to 2.5 years in group 1 and approximately 7 years in groups 2A and 2B. New vital bone was found in all cases at median densities of 38\% (n = 12) in group 1, 32\% in group 2A (n = 3), and 25\% in group 2B (n = 5). Differences between group 1 and 2B as well as 2A and 2B were statistically significant ( p = 0.025). No adverse effects were seen. All methods described were capable of creating new bone tissue with sufficient stability for successful implant placement
Long-Time Asymptotics for the Korteweg-de Vries Equation via Nonlinear Steepest Descent
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time
asymptotics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation for decaying initial data in the
soliton and similarity region. This paper can be viewed as an expository

Haloes gone MAD: The Halo-Finder Comparison Project
[abridged] We present a detailed comparison of fundamental dark matter halo
properties retrieved by a substantial number of different halo finders. These
codes span a wide range of techniques including friends-of-friends (FOF),
spherical-overdensity (SO) and phase-space based algorithms. We further
introduce a robust (and publicly available) suite of test scenarios that allows
halo finder developers to compare the performance of their codes against those
presented here. This set includes mock haloes containing various levels and
distributions of substructure at a range of resolutions as well as a
cosmological simulation of the large-scale structure of the universe. All the
halo finding codes tested could successfully recover the spatial location of
our mock haloes. They further returned lists of particles (potentially)
belonging to the object that led to coinciding values for the maximum of the
circular velocity profile and the radius where it is reached. All the finders
based in configuration space struggled to recover substructure that was located
close to the centre of the host halo and the radial dependence of the mass
recovered varies from finder to finder. Those finders based in phase space
could resolve central substructure although they found difficulties in
accurately recovering its properties. Via a resolution study we found that most
of the finders could not reliably recover substructure containing fewer than
30-40 particles. However, also here the phase space finders excelled by
resolving substructure down to 10-20 particles. By comparing the halo finders
using a high resolution cosmological volume we found that they agree remarkably
well on fundamental properties of astrophysical significance (e.g. mass,
position, velocity, and peak of the rotation curve).Comment: 27 interesting pages, 20 beautiful figures, and 4 informative tables

Detectors for the James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Spectrograph I: Readout Mode, Noise Model, and Calibration Considerations
We describe how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared
Spectrograph's (NIRSpec's) detectors will be read out, and present a model of
how noise scales with the number of multiple non-destructive reads
sampling-up-the-ramp. We believe that this noise model, which is validated
using real and simulated test data, is applicable to most astronomical
near-infrared instruments. We describe some non-ideal behaviors that have been
observed in engineering grade NIRSpec detectors, and demonstrate that they are
unlikely to affect NIRSpec sensitivity, operations, or calibration. These
include a HAWAII-2RG reset anomaly and random telegraph noise (RTN). Using real
test data, we show that the reset anomaly is: (1) very nearly noiseless and (2)
can be easily calibrated out. Likewise, we show that large-amplitude RTN
affects only a small and fixed population of pixels. It can therefore be
tracked using standard pixel operability maps.Comment: 55 pages, 10 figure
