Deathscapes in Latin America’s Metropolises: Urban Land Use, Funerary Transformations, and Daily Inconveniences

This essay argues that due to demographic changes and continued urbanization processes, adequate planning and governing of deathscapes is expected to become increasingly important in Latin America over the next decades. Based on existing literature about the spatial and socio-cultural transformations of death spaces in other regions – particularly Asian metropolises – the author assesses possible scenarios for the development of deathscapes in Latin American metropolises as contributions to a new research agenda. Examples from Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico are presented to highlight current debates surrounding a gradual conversion from burial to cremation and power struggles within the funerary chain. How a rationalization of dead-disposal activities favours some social groups and disadvantages others forms one of the core questions of the proposed research agenda. The author further acknowledges the need to produce more reliable data on the capacity, layout and management of deathscapes in order to address Latin American regional patterns and stimulate sustainable alternatives.Resumen: Los necropaisajes en metrópolis latinoamericanas: uso del suelo urbano, transformaciones funerarias e inconvenientes diariosEste ensayo sostiene que debido a los cambios demográficos y a los procesos de urbanización continuos, cabe esperar que en las próximas décadas una planificación y gestión adecuadas de los necropaisajes (deathscapes) cobren cada vez más protagonismo en Latinoamérica. Basándose en la bibliografía existente sobre las transformaciones espaciales y socioculturales de los necroespacios en otras regiones – en particular en metrópolis asiáticas –, la autora evalúa posibles escenarios para el desarrollo de los necropaisajes en metrópolis latinoamericanas como contribución a una nueva agenda de investigación. Se presentan ejemplos de Colombia, Ecuador y México para resaltar los debates actuales en torno al paso progresivo de los enterramientos a las incineraciones y las luchas de poder dentro de la cadena funeraria. Hasta qué punto una racionalización de las actividades relacionadas con la gestión de los muertos favorece a algunos grupos sociales y desfavorece a otros constituye una de las cuestiones primordiales de la agenda de investigación propuesta. Además, la autora reconoce la necesidad de producir más datos fiables sobre la capacidad, la disposición y la gestión de los necropaisajes con miras a abordar los patrones regionales en Latinoamérica, y así estimular alternativas sostenibles

Interstices between polis and necropolis

Where does the city of the living end and where does the city of the dead – the necropolis – begin? Cities like the fictitious Eusapia exemplify both antagonism and fluidity between the two types of polis. These conceptual interstices between spaces for the living and spaces for the dead tend to be overlooked in mainstream urban studies research. After all, urban scholars conceive of the necropolis as a spatially-bounded area separated from residential areas. The city of the dead is referred to as a ‘cemetery’or‘graveyard’to underscore its distinct status, in which homes for the dead cannot be con- fused with homes for the living

Latin American and Caribbean Urban Development

The new development agendas confirmed in the year 2015 evidence an increased global interest in cities and urban challenges. In Latin America and the Caribbean, cities have long been an established topic of study and debate. This exploration gives a brief overview of current research on urban development in the region and suggests fruitful avenues for future research. Following different ideological trends in twentieth-century urban studies, we currently see more pragmatic frameworks and a belief in technocratic solutions. Some scholars consider Latin American and Caribbean cities to be the world’s new signposts in urban development, given their role as sites of innovations in politics, architecture and urban design; we see potential here for urban scholars of the region to move beyond technocratic language. In addition, we argue for an area studies approach to these cities that uses the framework of the region as a heuristic device to unsettle global urbanist epistemologies that privilege North-to-South mobilities in both policy and theory. Resumen: El desarrollo urbano latinoamericano y caribeñoLas nuevas agendas de desarrollo confirmadas en el año 2015 reflejan un mayor interés mundial en las ciudades y en los retos urbanos. En Latinoamérica y en el Caribe, las ciudades llevan mucho tiempo siendo un tema habitual de estudio y debate. Esta exploración ofrece un resumen breve de las investigaciones actuales sobre desarrollo urbano en la región y sugiere caminos fructíferos para futuras investigaciones. Siguiendo las distintas tendencias ideológicas en los estudios urbanos del siglo XX, actualmente observamos marcos más pragmáticos y una creencia en soluciones tecnocráticas. Algunos investigadores consideran las ciudades latinoamericanas y caribeñas como los nuevos referentes mundiales en desarrollo urbano, dado su papel como centros de innovación en política, arquitectura y diseño urbano; vemos potencial para que los investigadores urbanos de la región traspasen el discurso tecnocrático. Además, abogamos por un enfoque de estudios regionales para estas ciudades que utilice el marco de la región como un instrumento heurístico para desequilibrar las epistemologías urbanistas globales que privilegian las movilidades del Norte al Sur tanto en políticas como en teorías
