Modeling the series of (n x 2) Si-rich reconstructions of beta-SiC(001): a prospective atomic wire?
We perform ab initio plane wave supercell density functional calculations on
three candidate models of the (3 x 2) reconstruction of the beta-SiC(001)
surface. We find that the two-adlayer asymmetric-dimer model (TAADM) is
unambiguously favored for all reasonable values of Si chemical potential. We
then use structures derived from the TAADM parent to model the silicon lines
that are observed when the (3 x 2) reconstruction is annealed (the (n x 2)
series of reconstructions), using a tight-binding method. We find that as we
increase n, and so separate the lines, a structural transition occurs in which
the top addimer of the line flattens. We also find that associated with the
separation of the lines is a large decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap, and that the
HOMO state becomes quasi-one-dimensional. These properties are qualititatively
and quantitatively different from the electronic properties of the original (3
x 2) reconstruction.Comment: 22 pages, including 6 EPS figure
Theoretical investigations of a highly mismatched interface: the case of SiC/Si(001)
Using first principles, classical potentials, and elasticity theory, we
investigated the structure of a semiconductor/semiconductor interface with a
high lattice mismatch, SiC/Si(001). Among several tested possible
configurations, a heterostructure with (i) a misfit dislocation network pinned
at the interface and (ii) reconstructed dislocation cores with a carbon
substoichiometry is found to be the most stable one. The importance of the slab
approximation in first-principles calculations is discussed and estimated by
combining classical potential techniques and elasticity theory. For the most
stable configuration, an estimate of the interface energy is given. Finally,
the electronic structure is investigated and discussed in relation with the
dislocation array structure. Interface states, localized in the heterostructure
gap and located on dislocation cores, are identified
Theoretical study of the (3x2) reconstruction of beta-SiC(001)
By means of ab initio molecular dynamics and band structure calculations, as
well as using calculated STM images, we have singled out one structural model
for the (3x2) reconstruction of the Si-terminated (001) surface of cubic SiC,
amongst several proposed in the literature. This is an alternate dimer-row
model, with an excess Si coverage of 1/3, yielding STM images in good accord
with recent measurements [F.Semond et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 2013 (1996)].Comment: To be published in PRB Rapid. Com
Simulations of energetic beam deposition: from picoseconds to seconds
We present a new method for simulating crystal growth by energetic beam
deposition. The method combines a Kinetic Monte-Carlo simulation for the
thermal surface diffusion with a small scale molecular dynamics simulation of
every single deposition event. We have implemented the method using the
effective medium theory as a model potential for the atomic interactions, and
present simulations for Ag/Ag(111) and Pt/Pt(111) for incoming energies up to
35 eV. The method is capable of following the growth of several monolayers at
realistic growth rates of 1 monolayer per second, correctly accounting for both
energy-induced atomic mobility and thermal surface diffusion. We find that the
energy influences island and step densities and can induce layer-by-layer
growth. We find an optimal energy for layer-by-layer growth (25 eV for Ag),
which correlates with where the net impact-induced downward interlayer
transport is at a maximum. A high step density is needed for energy induced
layer-by-layer growth, hence the effect dies away at increased temperatures,
where thermal surface diffusion reduces the step density. As part of the
development of the method, we present molecular dynamics simulations of single
atom-surface collisions on flat parts of the surface and near straight steps,
we identify microscopic mechanisms by which the energy influences the growth,
and we discuss the nature of the energy-induced atomic mobility

Structure–activity relationships of dinucleotides: Potent and selective agonists of P2Y receptors
Dinucleoside polyphosphates act as agonists on purinergic P2Y receptors to mediate a variety of cellular processes. Symmetrical, naturally occurring purine dinucleotides are found in most living cells and their actions are generally known. Unsymmetrical purine dinucleotides and all pyrimidine containing dinucleotides, however, are not as common and therefore their actions are not well understood. To carry out a thorough examination of the activities and specificities of these dinucleotides, a robust method of synthesis was developed to allow manipulation of either nucleoside of the dinucleotide as well as the phosphate chain lengths. Adenosine containing dinucleotides exhibit some level of activity on P2Y1 while uridine containing dinucleotides have some level of agonist response on P2Y2 and P2Y6. The length of the linking phosphate chain determines a different specificity; diphosphates are most accurately mimicked by dinucleoside triphosphates and triphosphates most resemble dinucleoside tetraphosphates. The pharmacological activities and relative metabolic stabilities of these dinucleotides are reported with their potential therapeutic applications being discussed
Mortality and life expectancy of Yokkaichi Asthma patients, Japan: Late effects of air pollution in 1960–70s
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma began increasing in early 1960s in the population of Yokkaichi-city (Mie Prefecture, Japan). The cause of the disease was sulfur oxide air pollution, and it is known as Yokkaichi Asthma. The pollution markedly decreased by the end of 1970s; no new cases have been reported since 1988. This study aimed at examining the late effects of air pollution on the health of Yokkaichi Asthma patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Mortality rate and life expectancy of patients, registered between 1965 and 1988, were investigated from 1975 through 2000.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mortality rates for COPD and asthma in patients from Yokkaichi-city were significantly higher than in the whole population of Mie Prefecture. For all ages (except for males between 80 and 84 years in 1985), the life expectancy of both males and females were significantly reduced in patients from Yokkaichi-city as compared with the whole population of Mie Prefecture. The potential gains in life expectancy excluding the mortality for respiratory diseases including COPD and asthma were larger for all ages in patients from Yokkaichi-city.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Mortality and life expectancy were adversely affected in patients from Yokkaichi-city, despite the fact that the air pollution problem has been already solved.</p
