    Mode-matching without root-finding: Application to a dissipative silencer

    This article presents an analytic mode-matching approach suitable for modelling the propagation of sound in a two-dimensional, three-part, ducting system. The approach avoids the need to the find roots of the characteristic equation for the middle section of the duct (the component) and is readily applicable to a broad class of problems. It is demonstrated that the system of equations, derived via analytic mode-matching, exhibits certain features which ensure that they can be re-cast into a form that is independent of the roots of the characteristic equation for the component. The precise details of the component are irrelevant to the procedure; it is required only that there exists an orthogonality relation, or similar, for the eigenmodes corresponding to the propagating wave-forms in this region. The method is applied here to a simple problem involving acoustic transmission through a dissipative silencer of the type commonly found in heating ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts. With reference to this example, the silencer transmission loss is computed, and the power balance for the silencer is investigated and is shown to be an identity that is necessarily satisfied by the system of equations, regardless of the level of truncation

    Analytic mode-matching for acoustic scattering in three dimensional waveguides with flexible walls: Application to a triangular duct

Prerequisite to the development of such methods is knowledge of closed form analytic expressions for the natural fluid–structure coupled waveforms that propagate in each duct section and the corresponding orthogonality relations. In this article recent theory [J.B. Lawrie, Orthogonality relations for fluid–structural waves in a 3-D rectangular duct with flexible walls, Proc. R. Soc. A. 465 (2009) 2347–2367] is extended to construct the non-separable eigenfunctions for acoustic propagation in a three-dimensional rectangular duct with four flexible walls. For the special case in which the duct cross-section is square, the symmetrical nature of the eigenfunctions enables the eigenmodes for a right-angled, isosceles triangular duct with flexible hypotenuse to be deduced. The partial orthogonality relation together with other important properties of the triangular modes are discussed. A mode-matching solution to the scattering of a fluid–structure coupled wave at the junction of two identical semi-infinite ducts of triangular cross-section is demonstrated for two different sets of “junction” conditions

    From dropping out to dropping in: exploring why individuals cease participation in musical activities and the support needed to reengage them

    Continued participation in music has been associated with well-being outcomes, yet many either fail to begin or cease musical participation after limited exposure. The current research examined why individuals cease participating, focusing on identifying barriers to participation and the support needed to re-engage in musical activities. A sample of 190 Australian residents (Mage = 26.87; 75.80% female) who had ceased previous musical participation completed an online questionnaire in which they rated the degree to which 15 items reflected their reasons for ceasing musical participation and answered an open-ended question regarding their requirements for re-engagement. An exploratory factor analysis of the quantitative responses identified four components relating to cessation: “Access and Opportunity,” “Activity Experience,” “Obligations,” and “Difficulty with Practicing.” A Grounded Theory analysis concerning the support required for re-engagement indicated four key themes: “Personal Investment,” “Requirements of the Musical Activity,” “Personal Qualities,” and “No Interest in Re-Engagement.” Collectively, these results provide an indepth understanding of factors external to music itself as influences on continued musical participation. With implications for facilitators and educators, these results suggest a need for collaboration and interaction between music facilitators and participants

    Block-structured, equal-workload, multi-grid-nesting interface for the Boussinesq wave model FUNWAVE-TVD (Total Variation Diminishing)

    We describe the development of a block-structured, equal-CPU-load (central processing unit), multi-grid-nesting interface for the Boussinesq wave model FUNWAVE-TVD (Fully Nonlinear Boussinesq Wave Model with Total Variation Diminishing Solver). The new model framework does not interfere with the core solver, and thus the core program, FUNWAVE-TVD, is still a standalone model used for a single grid. The nesting interface manages the time sequencing and two-way nesting processes between the parent grid and child grid with grid refinement in a hierarchical manner. Workload balance in the MPI-based (message passing interface) parallelization is handled by an equal-load scheme. A strategy of shared array allocation is applied for data management that allows for a large number of nested grids without creating additional memory allocations. Four model tests are conducted to verify the nesting algorithm with assessments of model accuracy and the robustness in the application in modeling transoceanic tsunamis and coastal effects

    Perspectives and limitations of gene expression profiling in rheumatology: new molecular strategies

    The deciphering of the sequence of the human genome has raised the expectation of unravelling the specific role of each gene in physiology and pathology. High-throughput technologies for gene expression profiling provide the first practical basis for applying this information. In rheumatology, with its many diseases of unknown pathogenesis and puzzling inflammatory aspects, these advances appear to promise a significant advance towards the identification of leading mechanisms of pathology. Expression patterns reflect the complexity of the molecular processes and are expected to provide the molecular basis for specific diagnosis, therapeutic stratification, long-term monitoring and prognostic evaluation. Identification of the molecular networks will help in the discovery of appropriate drug targets, and permit focusing on the most effective and least toxic compounds. Current limitations in screening technologies, experimental strategies and bioinformatic interpretation will shortly be overcome by the rapid development in this field. However, gene expression profiling, by its nature, will not provide biochemical information on functional activities of proteins and might only in part reflect underlying genetic dysfunction. Genomic and proteomic technologies will therefore be complementary in their scientific and clinical application
