An interplanetary magnetic field ensemble at 1 AU
A method for calculation ensemble averages from magnetic field data is described. A data set comprising approximately 16 months of nearly continuous ISEE-3 magnetic field data is used in this study. Individual subintervals of this data, ranging from 15 hours to 15.6 days comprise the ensemble. The sole condition for including each subinterval in the averages is the degree to which it represents a weakly time-stationary process. Averages obtained by this method are appropriate for a turbulence description of the interplanetary medium. The ensemble average correlation length obtained from all subintervals is found to be 4.9 x 10 to the 11th cm. The average value of the variances of the magnetic field components are in the approximate ratio 8:9:10, where the third component is the local mean field direction. The correlation lengths and variances are found to have a systematic variation with subinterval duration, reflecting the important role of low-frequency fluctuations in the interplanetary medium

result is suited for high precision calculations of relativistic effects in

Late Miocene to early Pliocene stratigraphic record in northern Taranaki Basin: Condensed sedimentation ahead of Northern Graben extension and progradation of the modern continental margin
The middle Pliocene-Pleistocene progradation of the Giant Foresets Formation in Taranaki Basin built up the modern continental margin offshore from western North Island. The late Miocene to early Pliocene interval preceding this progradation was characterised in northern Taranaki Basin by the accumulation of hemipelagic mudstone (Manganui Formation), volcaniclastic sediments (Mohakatino Formation), and marl (Ariki Formation), all at bathyal depths. The Manganui Formation has generally featureless wireline log signatures and moderate to low amplitude seismic reflection characteristics. Mohakatino Formation is characterised by a sharp decrease in the GR log value at its base, a blocky GR log motif reflecting sandstone packets, and erratic resistivity logs. Seismic profiles show bold laterally continuous reflectors. The Ariki Formation has a distinctive barrel-shaped to blocky GR log motif. This signature is mirrored by the SP log and often by an increase in resistivity values through this interval. The Ariki Formation comprises (calcareous) marl made up of abundant planktic foraminifera, is 109 m thick in Ariki-1, and accumulated over parts of the Western Stable Platform and beneath the fill of the Northern Graben. It indicates condensed sedimentation reflecting the distance of the northern region from the contemporary continental margin to the south

RR Lyrae Variables in the Globular Cluster M55. The First Evidence for Non Radial Pulsations in RR Lyr Stars
We present the results of a photometric study of RR Lyrae variables in the
field of the globular cluster M55. We have discovered nine new RR Lyrae stars,
increasing the number of known variables in this cluster to 15 objects. Five of
the newly discovered variables belong to Bailey type RRc and two to type RRab.
Two background RRab stars are probable members of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy.
Fourier decomposition of the light curves was used to derive basic properties
of the present sample of RR Lyrae variables. From an analysis of the RRc
variables we obtain a mean mass of , luminosity , effective temperature K, and helium
abundance . Based on the colors, periods and metallicities
of the RRab stars we estimate the value of the color excess for M55 to be equal
to . Using this value we derive the colors of the blue and
red edges of the instability strip in M55. The blue edge lies at
mag and the red edge lies at mag. We estimate the values of the
visual apparent and dereddened distance moduli to be and
, respectively. The light curves of three of the RRc variables
exhibit changes in amplitude of over 0.1 mag on the time scale of less than a
week, rather short for the Blazhko effect, but with no evidence for another
radial pulsational frequency. However we do detect other periodicities which
are clearly visible in the light curve after removing variations with the first
overtone radial frequency. This is strong evidence for the presence of
non-radial pulsations, a behavior common for Scuti stars but not yet

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of the Fe I 372 nm resonance line
We report measurements of the isotope shifts of the Fe I resonance line at 372 nm between all four stable
isotopes Fe, Fe, Fe, and Fe, as well as the
complete hyperfine structure of that line for Fe, the only stable
isotope having a non-zero nuclear spin. The field and specific mass shift
coefficients of the transition have been derived from the data, as well as the
experimental value for the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole coupling
constant of the excited state of the transition in Fe: MHz. The measurements were done by means of Doppler-free
laser saturated-absorption spectroscopy in a Fe-Ar hollow cathode using both
natural and enriched iron samples. The measured isotope shifts and hyperfine
constants are reported with uncertainties at the percent level.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
