Material will absorb quantity of carbon dioxide proportional to carbon dioxide concentration in atmosphere. Amount of absorption is indicated by color change
Cygnus X-2, super-Eddington mass transfer, and pulsar binaries
We consider the unusual evolutionary state of the secondary star in Cygnus
X-2. Spectroscopic data give a low mass (M_2 \simeq 0.5 - 0.7\msun) and yet a
large radius (R_2 \simeq 7\rsun) and high luminosity (L_2 \simeq 150\lsun).
We show that this star closely resembles a remnant of early massive Case B
evolution, during which the neutron star ejected most of the \sim 3\msun
transferred from the donor (initial mass M_{\rm 2i}\sim 3.6\msun) on its
thermal time-scale yr. As the system is far too wide to result from
common-envelope evolution, this strongly supports the idea that a neutron star
efficiently ejects the excess inflow during super--Eddington mass transfer.
Cygnus X-2 is unusual in having had an initial mass ratio in a narrow critical range near . Smaller lead to long-period systems with the former donor near the Hayashi line,
and larger to pulsar binaries with shorter periods and relatively
massive white dwarf companions. The latter naturally explain the surprisingly
large companion masses in several millisecond pulsar binaries. Systems like

A study of image quality for radar image processing
Methods developed for image quality metrics are reviewed with focus on basic interpretation or recognition elements including: tone or color; shape; pattern; size; shadow; texture; site; association or context; and resolution. Seven metrics are believed to show promise as a way of characterizing the quality of an image: (1) the dynamic range of intensities in the displayed image; (2) the system signal-to-noise ratio; (3) the system spatial bandwidth or bandpass; (4) the system resolution or acutance; (5) the normalized-mean-square-error as a measure of geometric fidelity; (6) the perceptual mean square error; and (7) the radar threshold quality factor. Selective levels of degradation are being applied to simulated synthetic radar images to test the validity of these metrics

The influence of laser hardening on wear in the valve and valve seat contact
In internal combustion engines it is important to manage the wear in the valve and valve seat contact in order to minimise emissions and maximise economy. Traditionally wear in this contact has been controlled by the use of a valve seat insert and the careful selection of materials for both the valve and the insert. More recently, due to the increasing demands for both performance and cost, alternative methods of controlling the wear, and the resulting valve recession, have been sought. Using the heating effect of a laser to induce localised phase transformations, to increase hardness and wear resistance, in materials has been used since the 1970s, however it is only in recent years that it has been able to compete with more established surface treatment techniques, particularly in terms of cost, as new laser hardware has been developed. In this work, a laser has been used to treat the valve seat area of a cast iron cylinder head. In order to optimise the laser parameters for use on the head, preliminary tests were carried out to investigate the fundamental wear characteristics of untreated cast iron and also cast iron with a range of laser treatments. Previous work has identified the predominant wear mechanism in the valve and valve seat contact as impact on valve closure. Two bespoke test machines, one for testing basic specimens and one for testing components, were used to identify the laser parameters most likely to yield acceptable results when applied to a cylinder head to be used in a fired dynamometer test. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy determination of the InN/yttria stabilized cubic-zirconia valence band offset
The valence band offset of wurtzite InN(0001)/yttria stabilized cubic-zirconia (YSZ)(111) heterojunctions is determined by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to be 1.19±0.17 eV giving a conduction band offset of 3.06±0.20 eV. Consequently, a type-I heterojunction forms between InN and YSZ in the straddling arrangement. The low lattice mismatch and high band offsets suggest potential for use of YSZ as a gate dielectric in high-frequency InN-based electronic devices
Two Effective Feature Selection Criteria for Multispectral Remote Sensing
In an earlier study, Swain et al. reported on two statistical separability measures which for multiclass feature selection were shown experimentally to be more reliable than divergence. However, the empirical results of that study together with the best theoretical results in the literature left open some practical questions regarding the quantitative characterization of these separability measures. This paper is concerned with an empirical study aimed at answering such questions. It has been possible to further substantiate that the Jeffreys-Matusita Distance and a saturating transform of divergence are effective feature selection criteria for remote sensing applications. In fact, an explanation as to why this should be the case has now been made apparent
