Neutrino Large Mixing in Universal Yukawa Coupling Model with Small Violation
We have analyzed the possibility that the universal Yukawa coupling
(democratic mass matrix) with small violations of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos
can induce the large mixing of neutrinos through the seesaw mechanism. The
possibility can be achieved by the condition that the violation parameters of
Majorana neutrinos are sufficiently smaller than the violation parameters of
Dirac neutrinos. Allowed regions of the violation parameters producing the
observed neutrino mass hierarchy and large neutrino mixing are not so
restricted at present in contrast to the violation parameters for quark sector.Comment: 14 pages, 4figure
Governance of Offshore IT Outsourcing at Shell Global Functions IT-BAM Development and Application of a Governance Framework to Improve Outsourcing Relationships
The lack of effective IT governance is widely recognized as a key inhibitor to successful global IT outsourcing relationships. In this study we present the development and application of a governance framework to improve outsourcing relationships. The approach used to developing an IT governance framework includes a meta model and a customization process to fit the framework to the target organization. The IT governance framework consists of four different elements (1) organisational structures, (2) joint processes between in- and outsourcer, (3) responsibilities that link roles to processes and (4) a diverse set of control indicators to measure the success of the relationship. The IT governance framework is put in practice in Shell GFIT BAM, a part of Shell that concluded to have a lack of management control over at least one of their outsourcing relationships. In a workshop the governance framework was used to perform a gap analysis between the current and desired governance. Several gaps were identified in the way roles and responsibilities are assigned and joint processes are set-up. Moreover, this workshop also showed the usefulness and usability of the IT governance framework in structuring, providing input and managing stakeholders in the discussions around IT governance
Models of Neutrino Masses: Anarchy versus Hierarchy
We present a quantitative study of the ability of models with different
levels of hierarchy to reproduce the solar neutrino solutions, in particular
the LA solution. As a flexible testing ground we consider models based on
SU(5)xU(1)_F. In this context, we have made statistical simulations of models
with different patterns from anarchy to various types of hierachy: normal
hierarchical models with and without automatic suppression of the 23
(sub)determinant and inverse hierarchy models. We find that, not only for the
LOW or VO solutions, but even in the LA case, the hierarchical models have a
significantly better success rate than those based on anarchy. The normal
hierachy and the inverse hierarchy models have comparable performances in
models with see-saw dominance, while the inverse hierarchy models are
particularly good in the no see-saw versions. As a possible distinction between
these categories of models, the inverse hierarchy models favour a maximal solar
mixing angle and their rate of success drops dramatically as the mixing angle
decreases, while normal hierarchy models are far more stable in this respect.Comment: v1: 28 pages, 12 figures; v2: 34 pages, 14 figures, updated previous

Electron localization : band-by-band decomposition, and application to oxides
Using a plane wave pseudopotential approach to density functional theory we
investigate the electron localization length in various oxides. For this
purpose, we first set up a theory of the band-by-band decomposition of this
quantity, more complex than the decomposition of the spontaneous polarization
(a related concept), because of the interband coupling. We show its
interpretation in terms of Wannier functions and clarify the effect of the
pseudopotential approximation. We treat the case of different oxides: BaO,
-PbO, BaTiO and PbTiO. We also investigate the variation of the
localization tensor during the ferroelectric phase transitions of BaTiO as
well as its relationship with the Born effective charges
CP and Lepton-Number Violation in GUT Neutrino Models with Abelian Flavour Symmetries
We study the possible magnitudes of CP and lepton-number-violating quantities
in specific GUT models of massive neutrinos with different Abelian flavour
groups, taking into account experimental constraints and requiring successful
leptogenesis. We discuss SU(5) and flipped SU(5) models that are consistent
with the present data on neutrino mixing and upper limits on the violations of
charged-lepton flavours and explore their predictions for the CP-violating
oscillation and Majorana phases. In particular, we discuss string-derived
flipped SU(5) models with selection rules that modify the GUT structure and
provide additional constraints on the operators, which are able to account for
the magnitudes of some of the coefficients that are often set as arbitrary
parameters in generic Abelian models.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figure
Deviation of Atmospheric Mixing from Maximal and Structure in the Leptonic Flavor Sector
I attempt to quantify how far from maximal one should expect the atmospheric
mixing angle to be given a neutrino mass-matrix that leads, at zeroth order, to
a nu_3 mass-eigenstate that is 0% nu_e, 50% nu_mu, and 50% nu_tau. This is done
by assuming that the solar mass-squared difference is induced by an
"anarchical" first order perturbation, an approach than can naturally lead to
experimentally allowed values for all oscillation parameters. In particular,
both |cos 2theta_atm| (the measure for the deviation of atmospheric mixing from
maximal) and |U_e3| are of order sqrt(Delta m^2_sol/Delta m^2_atm) in the case
of a normal neutrino mass-hierarchy, or of order Delta m^2_sol/Delta m^2_atm in
the case of an inverted one. Hence, if any of the textures analyzed here has
anything to do with reality, next-generation neutrino experiments can see a
nonzero cos 2theta_atm in the case of a normal mass-hierarchy, while in the
case of an inverted mass-hierarchy only neutrino factories should be able to
see a deviation of sin^2 2theta_atm from 1.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, references and acknowledgments adde
Bi-large Neutrino Mixing and Mass of the Lightest Neutrino from Third Generation Dominance in a Democratic Approach
We show that both small mixing in the quark sector and large mixing in the
lepton sector can be obtained from a simple assumption of universality of
Yukawa couplings and the right-handed neutrino Majorana mass matrix in leading
order. We discuss conditions under which bi-large mixing in the lepton sector
is achieved with a minimal amount of fine-tuning requirements for possible
models. From knowledge of the solar and atmospheric mixing angles we determine
the allowed values of sin \theta_{13}. If embedded into grand unified theories,
the third generation Yukawa coupling unification is a generic feature while
masses of the first two generations of charged fermions depend on small
perturbations. In the neutrino sector, the heavier two neutrinos are model
dependent, while the mass of the lightest neutrino in this approach does not
depend on perturbations in the leading order. The right-handed neutrino mass
scale can be identified with the GUT scale in which case the mass of the
lightest neutrino is given as (m_{top}^2/M_{GUT}) sin^2 \theta_{23} sin^2
\theta_{12} in the limit sin \theta_{13} = 0. Discussing symmetries we make a
connection with hierarchical models and show that the basis independent
characteristic of this scenario is a strong dominance of the third generation
right-handed neutrino, M_1, M_2 < 10^{-4} M_3, M_3 = M_{GUT}.Comment: typos correcte

The processing of pain undergoes several changes in aging that affect sensory nociceptive fibers and the endogenous neuronal inhibitory systems. So far, it is not completely clear whether age-induced modifications are associated with an increase or decrease in pain perception. In this study, we assessed the impact of age on inflammatory nociception in mice and the role of the hormonal inhibitory systems in this context. We investigated the nociceptive behavior of 12-month-old versus 6â8-week-old mice in two behavioral models of inflammatory nociception. Levels of TRP channels, and cortisol as well as cortisol targets, were measured by qPCR, ELISA, and Western blot in the differently aged mice. We observed an age-related reduction in nociceptive behavior during inflammation as well as a higher level of cortisol in the spinal cord of aged mice compared to young mice, while TRP channels were not reduced. Among potential cortisol targets, the NF-ÎșB inhibitor protein alpha (IÎșBα) was increased, which might contribute to inhibition of NF-ÎșB and a decreased expression and activity of the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). In conclusion, our results reveal a reduced nociceptive response in aged mice, which might be at least partially mediated by an augmented inflammation-induced increase in the hormonal inhibitory system involving cortisol
First-principles study of the structural energetics of PdTi and PtTi
The structural energetics of PdTi and PtTi have been studied using
first-principles density-functional theory with pseudopotentials and a
plane-wave basis. We predict that in both materials, the experimentally
reported orthorhombic phase will undergo a low-temperature phase
transition to a monoclinic ground state. Within a soft-mode framework,
we relate the structure to the cubic structure, observed at high
temperature, and the structure to via phonon modes strongly
coupled to strain. In contrast to NiTi, the structure is extremely close
to hcp. We draw on the analogy to the bcc-hcp transition to suggest likely
transition mechanisms in the present case.Comment: 8 pages 5 figure
